Many thanks for transcribing so beautiful & naive lyric to us all! I can't say nothing about that show (nor this covers) as I don't have (I guess it'll take me a couple of months to begin asking for it ;-) Now, I must say I can't help remember, considering this Favourite Colour a better & upgrade example of such a "Theme", and speaking of novelty songs, some called, in its spanish version, ?De Que' Color Es La Piel De Dios? (What coulour god's skin is?). I must confess I *loved* it at that moment: I was ?8 years? and a family'n radio only playing rancid "spaniard-light-flamenco" music. Man, that "group" (Up With The People!: it was as almost an entire audience in itself!) was a novelty! Here in Spain had huge success, grandfathers & grandsons together at large venues and so on. Were for some time, more popular than things like Globetrotters or Holiday On Ice! Argh! Have a Wonderful time! It humanizes this idea of keeping the music alive. With humor, it defuses the natural suspicion that we are internet stalkers. Most of all, I really like the idea of multiple working titles. Like Chuck's collection of JMDL takes on Tape Tree 5, an incredibly convoluted title reflects Joni's own ambiguity back upon her. (For example, I think one song was originally entitled "Clouds", then became "From Both Sides, Now", then she finally settled on "Two Grey Rooms". I could be mistaken about that though.) :) Lama PS, As if to repent, she then entitled the album "Clouds" instead! Not only did they recently broadcast an hour long segment from the latest/only Alison Krauss live concert, but last night, or the night before, they aired Woman Of Heart And Mind, followed by a live TV performance from 1970. So - has this one been video tree'd yet? The program was called something along the lines of "Joni Mitchell sings Joni Mitchell", and has the following set list:- Chelsea Morning Cactus Tree My Old Man (which she said needed an extra verse, so wasn't quite finished. No, I haven't compared it to the album version yet to see if it truly was a short version) For Free California Big Yellow Taxi Both Sides Now She complained of having a touch of flu, something she said happened when she came to the UK - and was it the same for us going to the USA? Also, if I'm not mistaken, Peter Green (of Fleetwood Mac, and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers fame) was in the audience. And you know what? In some years of list membership, this has to be my most "JC" post yet :-) - --Chris Marshall chrisAThatstand.org (AIM: Chr15Marshall) "If you're ever lost, I'll beat the world to finding you" Stryngs, "Bobblehats and Beer" Band website, with downloads, at http://www.stryngs.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Sep 2003 23:11:16 EDT From: Murphycopy@aol.com Subject: Re: lets sing out... I've been playing "Holland" by The Beach Boys a lot this week." I have been a big Beach Boys/Brian fan since '69 or so. Glad to see another one here. They (and Brian) don't seem to come up too much in the musical conversation here. I have not replaced a lot of my BBs vinyl with CDs, though. Though they have re-released a lot of two-album discs. I did get the Surf's Up/Sunflower one. Great value, those. (I noticed you were listening to Friends, too.) I had read that Brian was going into the studio to record a new album last fall. He said it was going to be a Spector "wall of sound" record. Do you know what ever happened with that? Imagination was sorta disappointing to me. A little too conventional. Though the song for Carl was beautiful. On the Holland CD do they have the little bonus record that was included in the original package? "i'll tell mom and dad about your private life" indeed! what's with karen C? the arrangements are so tacky and richard was so heavy-handed in his liberace-cum-fifth dimension approach to everything but karen always rises above the cheesiest of stuff. what a waste. how i miss her. wally, np: karen carpenter: one more time. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Sep 2003 23:39:03 -0500 From: David Sadowski Subject: Beach Boys (SJC) Yes, the Holland CD does include the "Mt. Vernon and Fairway" material that originally appeared as a bonus 7" with the LP. I've read that Brian Wilson is working on a new album that may incorporate some material he wrote along with Andy Paley in the late 90s. I agree about the production work on Imagination... a little too "adult contemporary" for my taste, maybe this is one reason he ditched producer Joe Thomas. Interestingly, the same friend who first turned me on to Joni Mitchell ( I think it was Ladies of the Canyon) also loved The Beach Boys and that's how I first got into them as well... via the much under-appreciated record Friends. I have also read that Brian would sometimes listen to Blue at top volume, over and over, for hours on end. I think it's regrettable that they have never worked together... give a listen to Morning Morgantown and then This Whole World and tell me that there isn't some sort of affinity there... In the meantime, Brian's tour next year will feature a 35 minute SMiLE suite, and there are reports that a 4-disc SMiLE box set is in the offing too... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Sep 2003 22:49:10 -0700 From: Rick and Susan Subject: Re: sweet 16 take 2 and lets sing out Now with full JC On 9/13/03 3:53 PM, rflynn@frontiernet.net wrote > On another note, I definitely remember a television appearance before LoTC, > where she sang the lyrics to "For Free" as "Got a black limousine / and two > white men / escorting me to the hall."
