The details on how to sub/unsub are on the jmdl site at http://www.smoe.org/lists/joni.info The particular info you're looking for is about 3/4 down the page. I'm guessing you're getting individual posts and that you've chosen to get ALL of the posts. If you want to get the joni-only stuff, you may wish to consider either the joni-only individual posts, or, maybe a better option for you, the joni-only digest. Yes, this CD is so incredibly sweet! 'Blue' is definitely a gem. And just when I had grown tired of 'Both Sides Now' along comes a singer named Terry Gonga who brought the song back to life for me! One of the best covers I've ever heard! I just finished watching the 'Let's Sing Out' video. What a treasure! Joni is so young and beautiful.. and her facial expressions while singing are still the same ones that she uses today. I guess I don't know what I'm saying here, except that she is still the same beautiful person now that she was back then. There was another group on the video who performed 'Get Together.' I really liked their rendition, and it somehow reminded me of Joni's 'This Flight Tonight.' Instead of singing "try to love one another, right now," they sang "try to love one another, yeah, yeah," which immediately made me think of Joni's line "you got the loving that I like, all right." Something about the "yeah yeah's" and the "all rights" seemed so similar to each other. Combined with the fast strumming also made 'This Flight Tonight' come to my mind. Is my mind going? Or is it just late? Thanks to Bob for the CD's and video.... and to Simon, and everyone else who may have been behind the scenes on these projects. Contributions from anyone on the list willing to look at these topics are welcome. Title: The working title seems to be Joni: In Other Words. Other suggestions are "What Was I Thinking?" (with a nod to Ms. Ash) or "Listen To What I Mean, Not What I Say!" Comments? Foreward: My vision: We need someone to write a very short note explaining what the book is, the sprit in which the works were written, and birthday wishes. Comments? Takers? Introduction: My vision: Telling a brief story of how these works came to be, including an edited version of the seed threads between Hell & Bob Murphy that started the game rolling, for example see Wed, 28 May 2003 20:59:16 -0700 (PDT). I thought we might entitle the Foreward From facetiousness to twisted beauty or something along those lines. Comments? Takers? Order of the works: As it stands, the works are simply in the order in which they appeared on the list. Do we like this idea, or would we prefer a Joni-release-date-chronological order? Or ? Two versions by different people of the same song: duplicated songs are listed in boldface. Is this a problem? Naturally, electronic copies of the finished product will be available to all. Please reply to the Only-Joni list, no need to send me offlist copies of your reply. Thanks. Regarding the group that sings "Get Together" on the video - that's the Allan Ward Trio, don't know anything about them except obviously that they're Canadian. For me, it shows a real contrast between a typical folk performance of the day and the level that Joni had attained then. And since many have not or will never hear it, here are the lyrics to her song "Favorite Colour" that she sings in the 1965 portion. I met a child a year ago, whose eyes would never see She asked me with a timid smile "What color is a tree"? In summertime, a tree is green, In autumn, gold and red In winter they are frosted white When all their leaves are shed. "I know the sky is blue" she said, "and silver is the sand, and apples are the brightest red, what color is a man?" Man is many colors, child, Some are yellow, some are brown And some are black as sightlessness, some white as eider down She took her crayons from a box, And placed them in my glove And said "By mixing all of these, comes my favorite colour - love" Any of you guitarists have this transcribed yet? ;~) Bob NP: Joni, "Night In The City" ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Sep 2003 15:19:24 -0400 From: "Richard Flynn" Subject: RE: sweet 16 take 2 and lets sing out Well-- it's in open G tuning: (DBDGBD) with a capo at fret #4. She uses standard tuning on the John Phillips tune & I like the little bluesy bend. So--she can play without "cheating." My friend David & my girlfriend & I were holding a private wake for Johnny Cash, playing old & new stuff, including the video of the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt." Then I played the Let's Sing Out tape for them & we all agree that it is amazing how much Joni grew as a songwriter and performer in just one year. It's nice to have the performances of "Born to Take the Highway" and the new "Favourite Colour" but "Just Like Me," "Urge for Going, & "Night in the City" in particular represent a quantum leap forward in songwriting skill. I do have to say that the Gilbert & Sullivan duet made us all cringe. My friend, David, is older than I--well he's 6 months older than Joni to be exact--& remembers seeing Judy Colins on this show as early as 1962 (when he was living in Canada. Anyway, both sweet 16 and the video have already provided hours of enjoyment at my house. > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-joni@jmdl.com [mailto:owner-joni@jmdl.com]On Behalf Of > SCJoniGuy@aol.com > Sent: Saturday, September 13, 2003 2:36 PM > To: hvnphun16@hotmail.com; joni@smoe.org > Subject: Re: sweet 16 take 2 and lets sing out > > > Glad to hear that your digging the stuff, Mia...and #44 and a > bonus is also > heading your way, so be on the lookout. > > I agree with you on all counts...Terry Gonda's BSN is astounding. It involves; first day; having a radioisotope injected into me, eating a fatty meal, then going in a mchine for gamma phtography for about 20 mins. that is fine. The 2nd test is the one that scares me, it makes my hands sweat just thinking about it: They will inject me with soemthing to make the bloood flow to my heart, ie dilate the vessels. this is bound to make my heart pound. but i will be laying down. This really scares me. I am neurotic, used to be prone to panic attacks and have had a bad experience in the past with a drug that caused an arythmia. I really don;t know how I cna have this test without panicking. Am i right to think this test will cause my heart to race/pound? Is this anything like a kidney x-ray where they inject you with this radioactive dye and then X-ray you while you're strapped with velcro to a table that they rotate - whoo - fun! had one of those! you get this funny taste in your mouth and this warm sensation down below, so you feel like you have to pee, but you don't - - the worst part is when you're turned upside down and it sounds like the velcro straps are starting to come open and you're afraid you'll land on your face on the floor. > The 2nd test is the one that scares me, it makes my > hands sweat just > thinking about it: They will inject me with > soemthing to make the bloood > flow to my heart, ie dilate the vessels. this is > bound to make my heart > pound. but i will be laying down. I suppose it would be pointless if they gave you some kind of mild sedative for the fear? Will there be someone there to hold your hand and talk to you while all this is going on? (I hope so!) Have you ever tried visualizing something like this, including any worst-case scenario? I've done this for things I'm really scared about and it seems to help in that the actual thing that happens is never as bad as the way I imagined it would be (the only thing to fear is fear itself.) ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Sep 2003 17:35:38 -0400 From: "Richard Flynn" Subject: RE: sweet 16 take 2 and lets sing out (SJC) I am a long time Ian & Sylvia fan--their recording of "The Circle Game" (while it sounds dated and a bit bouncy now) introduced me to her as a young lad. As a youngster, intensely interested in folk music, I regularly conned my parents into taking me to hear my favorite acts, usually at the legendary Cellar Door--this is how I got to see Joni in a club in '68 when I was 13 and well under the 18-year-old drinking age. We also saw Judy Collins there right after "Wildflowers" and because my little sister was sitting with us right next to the tiny stage & she was so young & cute, Judy came and sat at our table between sets, signed my copy of "Wildflowers" and gushed about how cute my sister was. (Later, when I was over 18, I took the same sister to the same club to see Patti Smith right after "Horses.") My sister (Kathy is her name) was reminiscing with me about musical things when we went on vacation to the beach this past summer, & she said, "You know, I'll never forgive you that you took some girlfriend to see Bruce Springsteen (in 1974) instead of me. And then all you did was tell me what a great show it was!" > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-joni@jmdl.com [mailto:owner-joni@jmdl.com]On Behalf Of > notaro@stpt.usf.edu > Sent: Saturday, September 13, 2003 3:38 PM > To: Richard Flynn > Cc: SCJoniGuy@aol.com; hvnphun16@hotmail.com; joni@smoe.org > Subject: RE: sweet 16 take 2 and lets sing out > > > Quoting Richard Flynn : > > > Then I played the Let's Sing Out tape for them & we all > > agree > > that it is amazing how much Joni grew as a songwriter and performer in > > just > > one year. As for the show--I wish. I remember she was in a red velvet dress, by herself, playing guitar. This was after STAS/JM but before (right before, as I recall) Clouds. I remember more about how I felt watching her than any details about the show itself. I had a major Joni jones then. I do remember that I was happy she played the songs that I was a bit disappointed were left off the first album--the hits already recorded by other people: Chelsea Morning, Both Sides Now, Circle Game. The Cellar Door (on M Street in Georgetown in DC) held about 300 people, so it was a magical & intimate performance. On another note, I definitely remember a television appearance before LoTC, where she sang the lyrics to "For Free" as "Got a black limousine / and two white men / escorting me to the hall."
