Though most of these are by big names, I think they have all been unfairly eclipsed by other releases by the same artists. 1. Ram; Paul McCartney (as prompted by Lama) -- More music per minute than any other post-Beatle release by any of them. Puts Lennon's solo work to shame IMHO. And for true experimentation for experimentation's sake take another listen to his first solo outing "McCartney." 2. Being There; Wilco -- Despite all the recent hoopla over Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, this is still their best work. Some of the best pop-rock writing of the last decade. 3. Brian Wilson; BW -- His first solo album, circa 1987. With inspired peaks of melody, instrumentation and arrangement that equal his glory days with the BBs. And, for a change, some good lyrics too. "Love and Mercy" gives me goosebumps. 4. Stranger's Almanac; Whiskeytown --- Ryan Adams when he was good. 5. New Radicals; Gregg Alexander --- Along with Being There, one of the 90s' best sets of pop-rock tunes, with great hooks, memorable melodies and super production. I'm with you 100% on this one, Bruce...although Band On The Run would be right up there too. But now that I think of it, I can never get enough of Ram whereas I only listen to BOTR every now & again. Maybe it's because my initials are RAM. :~) > 2. Being There; Wilco -- Despite all the recent hoopla over Yankee Hotel > Foxtrot, this is still their best work. It might end up a little longer than five........ Ani Difranco - Revelling/Reckoning -- I've always loved her work but this one is just so f*cking good. with poetry that really matches up to Joni's and sad sad songs. I love this album Dar Williams - The Honesty Room and The Green World, but I love all her work. The Honesty Room is her first, TGW has very mature and bright songs like Spring Street and After All, of which the poetry is just fantastic. Also check out her latest, The Beauty of the Rain, very pop-influenced but still a good album. Dave Carter and Tracy Grammar - When I Go --one just wants to promote these two, especially after Dave's unfortunate death last year. I LOVE THIS ALBUM, suckers for mystical, poetical songwriting will as well. Ron Sexsmith - Cobblestone Runway -- perhaps the best MALE songwriter around (PUN INTENDED) Kris Delmhorst - five stories: f*cking great album, but you must enjoy the more deep folk/altcountry sound. Richard Shindell - Courier: I listen to this live-album at least once every week. Richard simply writes great songs, go buy the cd now! Aimee Mann - Bachelor No. 2 -- fantastic songwriting of course, brilliant Kathleen Edwards -- Failer - hewr debut, very Americana/altcountry -- considered a brilliant debut-album Janis Ian - Revenge -- her best ever I think, but who cares. Btw, that other Joni, La Baez, has a new album out............... It's supposed to be very very good. Thanks for the list Paul...speaking of La Baez, I'm going to be seeing her live and up close on Oct. 5 when she plays The Handlebar here in Greenville...very intimate, wonderful acoustics, should be great. Although I'm not really a big fan of hers, I have to admit that she's a legend & an icon and has done so much to help others through her art, I just feel I should go see her. Plus, guess who's the opening act? Eastmountainsouth! That's what got me off the fence. And I'm also planning on seeing the Blue Man Group in town in November - that should be WAY cool. (tip - go for the private music release with a black background & white picture) billy bragg - back to basics ok - so im cheating - this is a reissue of his first 2 albums on one cd. he really does bring the music back down to basics - its all about the message - i dont necessarily agree with all he says, but oh i do love the way he says it. i love driving to this music second chapter of acts - 20 im cheating again & going for a double album best of set. 2nd chapter of acts is a gospel group consisting of one brother & two sisters. harmonies which are beautiful strong emotional & powerful. my favourite is annie herring - the only singer i can compare her to in terms of intensity of performance and emotion is janis - yeah - shes *that* good........... and one im falling in love with more and more - the thrill of maintaining momentum - stryngs. folks - get this album. now. ron np - annie herring - bow down ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Sep 2003 17:35:03 -0400 From: "Richard Flynn" Subject: RE: the "LMDL" thing NJC I'm with Bob on "Gold" And I'm also very fond of the punkier 1st Whiskeytown. Today a dumb (but typically Tory, IMO) statement came out from Tory headquarters, stating: "Dalton McGuinty. He's an evil reptilian kitten-eater from another planet." I guess there's not a lot more anyone could add to that. ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Sep 2003 20:13:43 EDT From: AzeemAK@aol.com Subject: Re: Stupid politicians - njc - a wee bit of Canadian political content In a message dated 13/09/2003 01:09:58 GMT Daylight Time, anima_rising@yahoo.ca writes: > Today a dumb (but typically > Tory, IMO) statement came out from Tory headquarters, > stating: "Dalton McGuinty. 'superstar' ends up being a very sympathetic, very moving film. joseph DID make that clear... my journey with karen carpenter was: 1) loving the early singles and that wonderful voice 2) feeling way too cool to like the carpenters when i could listen to zeppelin instead 3) angry at them for enabling nixon's popularity and false view of what americans were (as my politics developed. sure, happy shiny white families are a part of the united states, but there is so much more) 4) realizing that, wherever they were on the cultural continuum, they made great music and she had a fantastic voice. i saw 'superstar' about 12 years ago, and i have a tape. people were so mad that the carpenters clamped down on haynes that, if they had a copy, they dubbed it A LOT, which is why there are so many copies in existence. i haven't watched it in a while, but it seems like i will soon. patrick np - a case of you, caroline lavelle, from 'both sides now, another view' ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Sep 2003 22:19:49 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Stupid politicians - njc - a wee bit of Canadian political content --- AzeemAK@aol.com wrote: > > > But seriously, this looks like something from The > Onion - they didn't > *really* say that surely?? > > Azeem, shaking his head... Paul Castle wrote: A while back Ashara asked me if I could send her a copy of the story Rick Scott (Vancouver songwriter and dulcimer player) told me about Joni. Coming across it this morning, I thought I'd re-post it - it's appeared on the jmdl a few times, but for newcomers (and oldtimers who might enjoy re-reading), here it is ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "In 1971, I was hitchhiking with my wife Sue, my friend JR Stone and my dog Mousse, up the Sechelt (Sunshine) Coast of British Columbia. It was tough for three hippies and a dog to catch a ride, but after about half an hour a woman driving a beat up Ford Pinto pulled over. Big and shaggy, Mousse immediately climbed into the front seat and laid his head down on the driver's lap. JR slid in next to him, Sue and I got in the back and we headed off down the road. The woman was patting Mousse's head and complimenting us on what a nice dog he was. She asked us how far we were going... about 30 kilometres to Pender Harbour. Between her question and our ability to answer, there was a group realization that the driver was Joni Mitchell. Each of us took turns trying to articulate the name of our destination, but all that came out was stammering. When we finally managed to tell her, she said she could take us almost all the way but she had to stop off at Lord Jim's Lodge to pick up a friend. She said she might go to the pub but, if we were still hitchhiking when they came out, they would give us a ride the rest of the way. I think we just sat there staring at Joni Mitchell stroking Mousse's head. I was fantasizing that in the next life I might be lucky enough to come back as a dog. When we got to the turnoff she pulled over and as we were getting out she noticed my instrument case and asked what it was. When I told her it was a dulcimer she said, "Way out, can I see it?" The next thing I knew she was examining my dulcimer with great interest. JR Stone is a soft spoken North Carolina mountain man of few words, so I volunteered the information that he had built my instrument. She beamed at him and examined the dulcimer even more closely. After a few minutes she asked if he would build her one. With a great deal of difficulty he finally managed to answer, "Sure". As Joni left us, she renewed her offer to take us further later and asked JR where she could find him. We told her where we would be for the weekend. We couldn't believe what had just happened and didn't think we'd ever see her again. Nonetheless, we stopped hitchhiking and just stood by the road. An hour later she came back down the road with her friend in the passenger seat and stopped to pick us up. Paying no mind to the passenger, Mousse jumped straight onto his lap and settled back down with his head on Joni. We all squeezed in the back and she introduced us to Graham (Nash). She drove us to Pender Harbour and next day came to visit to discuss dulcimer specifications with JR. I was amazed when she took up my dulcimer, tuned all the strings to the same note and proceeded to play "A Case of You" from her "Blue" album. I'll never wash my dulcimer again. Over the next three weeks JR built her an exquisite mountain dulcimer. But it took him another week to deliver it because he was so shy. She was so delighted, she paid him a hundred dollars more than his original quote, which I think was $300. Over 20 years later, in 1996, I was reading a Rolling Stone article about Joni and in the accompanying photograph there she was with JR's dulcimer hanging on the wall behind her. I must admit I felt a twinge of jealousy that JR got in Rolling Stone before I did. JR Stone still lives and builds amazing instruments in Boone, North Carolina. He has built me several four string dulcimers and a 6 string and bass dulcimer as well." I followed Warren's music from the beginning. It wasn't what I would call my fave music, but he was such an original character and he captured the streets and scene of 70s L.A. with such great humor and irony (or drollity if that is a word). A few years back a bunch of us jmdlers from CA went to the two night Fred Walecki benefit in Santa Monica. When Warren showed up (I think it was a surprise) everyone just loved it.
