(for AOL members) [Emiliano Subject: Re: carpenters' home NJC For those of you whose taste in cinema veers towards the emergent and the underground, you may want to check out Todd Haynes' 1987 film _Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story_. This was not released commercially because of a lot of problems. Chief of this was the refusal of the Carpenter family to release the film because Haynes (_Safe_, _Far From Heaven_, _Velvet Goldmine_) used Karen's voice to do some objective correlative score for the film's image and those songs were unauthorized. Second, the film used Barbie dolls to enact the life of the Carpenters -- something approaching revolutionary in terms of techniques. The use of Barbie Dolls was likewise not authorized, so Matel was after damages. Its interesting to see how our conception of our bodies found an equivalent in the unrealistic models in Barbie Dolls and how we sort of enslave ourselves to fit that image. My prof said that if Barbie is real, she would be at least 8 feet tall -- a true case of acromegaly or giantism. The film was all of 43 minutes and the copy used was a bit blurred. But what a film! The songs were used in some contexts that were a bit too painful to watch and listen. And when we were growing up, we never owned a single Carpenter album as a family, that doesn't mean that we don't know the songs she sung (at least the popular ones -- which is like more than half their recorded repertoire). And, when Karen sings the songs and the Barbie dolls were doing the portrayal, in an odd sort of way, it was too chillingly real. Surely, Haynes was not suggesting that the Carpenter family represents some ideal family during the Nixon Era but its intersting to see how other people other than the Carpenter family were "portrayed" by real people and theirs were not. There was one scene that was quite revealing: In one scene where Richard was getting angry at Karen for taking the pill again (I forgot the name but it was induced to induce defecation), Karen replied that she doesn't care. Richard said something like: "what about our career? you are going to ruin us both" to which Karen replied (something to this effect): "and what about your secret life? mom and dad will know sooner or later.." When the movie was over, almost everyone in class wanted to know what she meant. Our prof simply said: "He is gay but he is not out yet." The film is ultimately a must-see. Its bizarre and beautiful at the same time. Things you only describe when you watch some David Lynch films, and almost all of David Cronenberg films. Joseph (who wants to recommend to everyone to watch _American Splendor_). Quoting kerry : > Ahhhh....Karen, one of my first loves.
