And a daugher Jennifer - also a musician. I have Chris Stills' album (100 Year Thing) and I definitely recommend it. His voice sounds uncannily like his father's, and there's a definite resemblance in looks. But he's also inherited Stephen's musical ability, and I think any fan of Stephen's would enjoy this one as well. You can hear some sound clips at his website: http://www.chrisstills.com Hell P.S. Kenny - I also think Stills Alone is a great album. Personally I think that's what he does best - solo with an acoustic guitar. And I get so annoyed that he never makes any of those "great guitarists" lists - he's an incredible musician, and highly under-rated! ___________________________________ "To have great poets, there must be great audiences too." - Walt Whitman Hell's Home Page - NEW & IMPROVED! http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~hell/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Sep 2003 12:51:06 +0200 From: "mike pritchard" Subject: Re: NJC I spy for the FBI >>Let's just institute a fine for typos and we can all get rich off Colin.<< And while we're being pedantic/picky, I'd like to propose fines for all those jonilistas who continually use the word 'definate' (you know who you are). I am such an absolute fan of Alison Krauss and Union Station! She has such a consistently beautiful voice and her live performances are always right on! The whole ensemble is so, so talented. I forget what his name is, but one of the group's members gained noteriety for a song off the "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?" songtrack. I think the name of the song is "Man of Constant Sorrow". It has awakened a love for bluegrass in me. I did not know that Alison produced Nickel Creek. It makes sense though. When I first heard them, they reminded me of Alison's sound and I took to them immediately. Living in rural Ohio for 16 years and being such a lover of music, sooner or later I would be affected by Country and Bluegrass. I love anything that is artistic, well done, and original. Chris, I agree wholeheartedly with your comments. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! Love, Sherelle Chris wrote: "Hi all, Just thought I'd post a quick note about Alison Krauss. She and Union Station got mentioned in an online review of Stryngs (in the context of chipping away at success/popularity), at which point I largely forgot about them. Then I spotted a live concert of theirs on TV and was very impressed. Then I noticed that Alison's produced both Nickel Creek CDs. Anyway, long windedly, what I'm getting around to saying is that now they've got a full double DVD out of their live concert, and it's fantastic. Regardless of whether you like bluegrassy/country sort of music, a few things stand out: (a) the musicianship - top notch; (b) Alison's voice, which is sublime; (c) the quality of the live recording, which in my opinion, is beyond compare. Additionally, they've included a full surround sound mix in both Dolby Digital and DTS formats. It's joyous. And what I believe to be their latest CD, New Favourite (2001) is a corker too. Now: if, five years ago, someone had told me that I'd be listening to stuff bordering on country music, I'd have told 'em where and when to get off. I have four CD's that are currently in heavy rotation on my CD player: 1. Kem-His album "Kemistry" is wonderful! When you first hear him, he will remind you of Al Jarreau, but then he goes into something completely different. I was told that Kem has been through some serious personal problems and so he sings and writes from the heart. My favorite song on the CD is a very melodic and beautiful one called, "This Place". Here are some of my favorite lyrics: There's sorrow and sadness here But there's heaven and sunshine too The spirit of peace rules free and clear Making way for laughter here There are children that flower the trees There are people who need to believe In this place.... The first time I heard this song, I was going through some trials. I started crying uncontrollably-at work no less. Thank God no one was around! The music was like a balm to my soul and I felt the words were sent straight down from heaven! 2. Sade-Love Deluxe. If you ever get a chance to hear this CD, please listen to her song, "Pearls". It is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. It is about a poor woman in Somalia looking for pearls and "living a life she didn't choose". So touching. 3. Cassandra Wilson-New Moon Daughter. This was a Christmas gift and even though I asked for it, it took me a long time to warm up to it. But when I did...Wow! My favorite two songs are, "Until" and "A Little Warm Death". I love the latter because of its musicality and the way the violin is used as a jazz instrument. Being a big fan of Jean Luc-Ponty's, I love to hear any jazz piece with a violin. 4. Michael Franks-The Very Best of Michael Franks. I have become a huge fan of his even though I wasn't totally familiar with all of his works. I bought the "best of" to acquaint myself with his songs and can't stop playing the CD! He is original in his song concepts and lyrics. I am particularly drawn to his lyrics. It's hard to pick a favorite, but for now, I will go with "When Sly Calls". Thanks for letting me share! She played a synth and plucked her electric violin and played "Both Sides Now", and in itself this was awesome, but I'll always remember the introduction: "Those of you who make things of beauty - make them like there's no tomorrow". Thanks to Harry, I can listen to this recording anytime. I have a small favor to ask. One of my dear friends and coworkers is on her way to the UK to make a new life with her boyfriend, who is from the UK. Even though she has her boyfriend and his family, she would like to make new acquaintences as well. I told her that I would ask if any of my "family" would be willing to swap email addresses with her and be there to help with her adjustment to her new life. My friend's name is Kim Singleton and she is one of the nicest people I have ever met. She worked as with our Events Director helping to advertise concerts put on here at the MCI Center. She's looking for a job as well and would be so fantastic in the entertainment field. Please email me off-list if you are interested in helping her adjust to her new life. I believe she will be living in London. Thanks. I saved the honorable JMDLers' recommendations and will make a point of checking them out. My selection: * Ian Dury: an old -timer, recently deceased, had polio (like Joni) and a very distorted body. Known for his hits: Sex & Drugs & Rock'n Roll and Wake Up (and make love with me). Groovy bass, haunting songs, recommend his 1st album from 78: New Boots & Panties. May not be for all tastes. * Derek Trucks: nephew of Butch Trucks, a founding member of Allman Bros. Played like Duane at age 13. Now in his mid-20's, a gifted slide player as well as an eclectic musician. Recommend: Joyful Noise * Zero/Steve Kimock: beautiful melodies, great players, what else do you want? Steve replaced Jerry Garcia...so that should be a reference. * Rainer: german-born slide player, raised in Chicago, has got the blues with a twist. * Anders Osborne: eclectic player, from New Orleans? (Paz knows him). Stay away from his live album but the rest is very interesting. * Richard Thompson: founding member of Fairport Convention, has matured in his composing skills. Discovered him thanks to Debra Shea. A musician's guitarist and an hypnotizing performer. Recommend his recent live CDs. Also I agree with Les about John Martyn. I was playing HITS in the kitchen when I lived with him and 'Woodstock' came on and he said that he knew the song so I asumed he was familiar either with the Matthews Southern Comfort version or the one by CSN&Y. I said "did you know Joni wote it?". He then said in a very patronizing way "Steve, it's a very famous song I doubt very much that Joni Mitchell wrote it"! I didn't bother to argue with him because he doesn't like to be proven wrong. Sometime after he noticed in a sheet music book that the song 'Woodstock' was written by Joni Mitchell! He seems to have such a dislike for her. I remembered saying that I'm going to learn to play the guitar just like her. He then said that he can tell she uses different tunings (which I didn't know at the time) and that they are 'cheating'? He just doesn't have a clue and really resents the fact that I (try to) play in different tunings. Oh well that's my dad! This is a special show for me because it falls close to the anniversary which doesn't need mentioning, and it's also 2 days before my birthday, so this is my birthday party of sorts, as well as a festive antidote to today's heavy load. Kayzoos will be in operation. I will sing at least one, and probably two, Joni covers. Not usually kosher to do more than one cover by the same artist in a one-hour set, but it's my party, and I'll sing Joni if I want to!! So, if you're game, I'd love to see you. I know there are some NYC listers whom I have not met, perhaps you'd like to come out for this one. I can't guarantee you'll like the show, I guess, but I can say with confidence that I don't suck. Beyond that, it's really a matter of opinion. ;-) So here are the details: saturday, september 13 at 8:30PM KAY ASHLEY with AVIV ROTH at SAM'S 263 west 45 street new york, ny no cover charge http://www.kayashley.com http://www.avivroth.com I go on at 8:30, Aviv goes on at 9:30.
