Those bugs are the hugest bugs I've ever seen. I hate those! Don't know if they're actually cockroaches since they can fly short distances (2" to 3" wings!!!) but they have the armored look that cockroaches have. I've never seen more than one at a time (thank God) and never in anyone's home. Usually I see them in the subways near the tracks, or once in a while walking along the sidewalk (they seem to strut, like they know they're the biggest baddest bugger on the street; most people walk around them). Recently I came home late and there was one in the hallway of my building, sitting on a step near the open window. They do cause me to have some weird primitive fearful reaction, like it's going to get huge and do me in if I threaten to harm it. Meanwhile it was just sitting there, flipping its wings a little, oh ick!, just daring me!, so I stepped as far from it as I could get (hey buddy you have your space!) and went on up the stairs. No way was I going to do any squishing! Next morning I did see that someone had squished him. Then I found out one of my neighbors was missing. Oh, well. Before I go to the trouble of scanning and sending this to the list (to whom in particular?) can anyone out there assure me that this work hasn't been done before? I have searched the database for the author and found nothing so I assume this will be new material (although it's from a 1975 paperback). I think it was a really good experience, sitting in the circle and hearing everybody taking turns in describing a book that they loved so much. Most of us felt that we wanted to give all the books a try (unless we had read them already, like the blue bookworm sitting to my left! :-) ) so here are the details. (Colin, in my mind I have already added The Lovely Bones to that list - now all you have to do is attend the next Jonifest and add that book to the pile!) And I'll just quickly sneak something else in first. I know if I don't do it now, I'll never find the time again, so here is just quickly my mini fest report. As everybody has said: it just seems to get better by the year. I hadn't expected that, I was in fact mindful of the advice "never go back" to things that seem so perfect in your memory, and that never can be repeated. But this disproved the theory. For one thing, the performers have really grown so much again, I was really knocked out by the quality of every single one. Suzan, Jenny, Ashara, to pick just at random from the people who have not yet got to the CD production stage: you were wonderful! Bob Muller made me cry with Soldier's Things - gee and I really don't cry that easily, I'm not an American, remember ;-) ! I'd just like to extend some special thank yous to: - - my wonderful travelling companion Bob Sartorius, a new friend found; - - my NYC hotel room and bed mates Ron and Cindy S. for their great company and perfect room and bed manners (I'll leave it to you to work out which was which haha...) - - Les Ross and the Stryngs band for joining us for tapas and hookahs that evening in NYC; - - Marianne and Bree for their beautiful painted rocks, planted like fairy tale objects all over the Full Moon house - if only they hadn't been too heavy for my luggage! - - Lama for the Yes music; - - John Van Tiel for the really good chat we had; - - Kenny B for the chats and playing me some wonderful CDs in "the cocktail house" and being so happy that I "got" his music; - - Rachel for being the highlight of the fest - what proud parents she must have! (my sons haven't heard the end of it yet for a loooong time!) - - Anita and Stephanie(alias Barbara haha) for being such lovely newcomers who immediately felt like we already knew each other (yes Anita, I do know your mother was Belgian, you did tell me :-) ) - - Mingus, Rolls and Jeff for the great trek amidst the mushrooms... - - Victor for producing such an infectuously melodic CD that I can't get the tunes out of my head - and that's a GOOD thing! OK, I'd better stop. This is getting too long and still I know there are so many other names that I am just as fond of, so this is really not supposed to be selective. Every single person there was and is a total treasure. Ahem, now the business. Here without further ado is the book list (in completely random order). Me too. Years ago I thought it was because it triggered emotional memories of winter and being stuck inside the house, and I dreaded that. Then I read about the weak winter sunlight and how that can cause some people to be depressed. Then a couple years ago I realized my melancholy feeling started early, about this time of year so way before winter's actually here, and that once the cold weather is here I feel fine. So now I'm thinking it starts when the weather changes enough so that it's still extremely hot during the day, but the nights are getting cool, and that triggers some physical reaction, like an allergy would. A friend suggested that there may be something in the air during this time that's affecting me. Minor post-nasal drip starts and then I feel generally lousy. So I'm thinking now that it's a physical reaction, rather than something emotional, and that makes it much easier to deal with because I know once it's cold all the time I'll be feeling better. Wally, there may be some similar physical explanation for your discomfort during the summer months. As for fears, I don't think it's a complete phobia because I do manage to pet my neighbor's well-muscled very big dog (trying to desensitize myself). But any dog bigger than a cocker spaniel makes me very nervous (and then the idea that they "know" if you're afraid creeps me out). I've seen normally placid dogs go nuts, and it's one thing when it's a chihuahua chewing up my ankles, but terrifying when it's a golden retriever biting off my neighbor's child's face... so, no big dogs for me. And I don't think I could ever have any kind of relationship with anyone who owned pit bulls as pets. Little dogs made for killing. No thanks.
