Maybe it comes from > her suffering from polio and not being able to > compete athletically at that point in her life? I wouldn't say she's surrounded by sports - certainly it's prevalent in LA, but (and I may be wrong here) her immediate circle of friends seem to be more associated with the arts, so sports wouldn't necessarily be the prime topic of conversation! Even the men she's been involved with over her life, have all been more artistically-inclined than interested in sports. Obviously these are just my impressions and opinions, but I don't think Joni has made a conscious decision to "ignore" sport in her writing, I just get the feeling that she hasn't really been exposed to it very much - either as an adult, or during her childhood. Obviously polio could have played a big part in that, though. She does mention gambling (which could include horse racing), playing pool and car racing (Lead Foot Melvin!) so I think she's into more of the "social" sports, than the really serious, competitive ones! More from Tasmania (near Australia) Yesterday, while shopping in the mall with the wife, I went into the local record shop (Sound Waves ) and asked the shop assistant at the counter.... "Hello have you got any Joni Mitchell stuff?...I could not see any"...... and yes the background music was loud in the small shop and it was crowded with about 10 people "Jane who? " was the reply..the shop assistant was 30+ in semi modern clothing "Joni Mitchell.....the singer?", I again asked "Jane who??" she, the shop assistant again said..(very Monty Python) "J-O-N-I........Joni.......JOE...KNEE" "Joan Osborne?" was the reply "Joni Mitchell..she sang Big Yellow Taxi?" "What?"......(Monty Python..is this a cheese/record shop?) I asked "could you please check on your computer?"..... the computer took about 90 seconds to find Jean Mitchell !! and then Jane Mitchell ! then another 60 seconds to find Joni !! I was given the print out and told that 'speacial' records or 'imports' would cost a lot and postage from 'overseas' on the main land (i.e. Australia)..would also cost a lot and take 6 weeks to get here!!.......as there was not a lot of people asking for this 'special's stuff...I felt I was asking for porn! I actually felt trapped i.e. cut off from Man/music kind...was I in a Michael J Fox film...back to past?. Had they heard of the Beatles?..would they ban Elvis and the Rolling Stones?...jeez they were in for it, when they heard of Sex Pistols!! I now realise how lucky I was or had been in living in major cities..... My wife who was waiting outside the 'music' shop, asked why I looked so red in the face? and next-door at the supermarket..they were actually playing the other 'Big Yellow Taxi' over the loudspeakers!!.....so I dashed again into the music shop, with the intention of kidnapping the shop assistant.....and taking her out of the shop to hear...I shouldered my way to the counter thru customers being served and shouted...... "turn the music down and listen next-door!!!"..... the woman saw this mad man and did so......only to hear...... the supermarket loudspeaker...asking for a price check on an item.......and the last bars of music of 'Big Yellow Taxi"........ Everyone in the shop looked at me...as I retreated slowly backward...with the wife saying "your an embarrassment, I can't take you any where!" but worse...everyday I now have to pass the music shop on the way to work! but to be fair.....we are a rural community (10,000 people...5,000 in town) and Country (with out the..Western) is huge .....as is Yodelling!!!!!!!...so yep Jane..ooops Joni is 'Special's......so back to Ebay!!! yeeee haaa!! and I not even a die hard fan like you lot!!!!! Ash oh yes.....thank you for all those that keep mentioning...Heart, Yes, Springsteen, Pink Floyd etc. My Joni moment........Isle of Wight Festival 1970 video......Joni..'talking' to the crowd...that part always raises the (grey/gray) hair on the back of my neck. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Aug 2003 23:58:55 -0700 (PDT) From: Susan Guzzi Subject: Re: nuns (njc) vince wrote: Vince comments: every guy in my social group in high school dated girls from Alvernia because they put out and were liberal. To this day, at this moment, I get choked up when I think of Our Lady of the Angels,. I was 6 when it happened and I still see it in my mind. Susan, after December 1 1958, was there one child, catholic or protestant, left in Chicago who would ever listen to authority, church, religious, secular, again? 93 children, 3 nuns burned to death and it never had to be, That you were a survivor... if not of the actual event, of that school and the grief it bore... I have no words,. I was not even 2 but if you can believe this, I do have "some" memory of it ... my cousin was killed and a girl from our street. And I do recall my brother at the window pointing to the smoke and my mothers horror as she realized what was happening. Trauma I assume, must play a part in retaining these memories at that young an age. That all said, the fear that built that new school was way more intense. In my mind it was kind of like an asylum, simialr but not as brutal as the Magdeline Laundries. What an abyss of hypocrisy that place was - thankfully I am a survivor! It was a grief ridden place that is for sure. Peace, Susan NPIMH - The ALvernia school song ... Student years pass quickly la la la Yahoo!
