Perhaps you're linking the soul to a religious concept and that's why you believe in it but refuse to call it a soul? Regarding your mother first, of course there are times when one doesn't not have a choice about death. I didn't mean to imply that anybody who dies does so because they lack the will to carry on the fight. Surely there are more factors involved but I believe that in some cases this will does play an important part. I'm glad you finally connected with your soulmate. Your account brings 2 observations: First, as I get older I find that it's often best to listen to one's intuitions. I believe we all have a 6th sense which got put out of use over the ages due to living in the modern world. So the key is to get more tuned to it, like Kate did. The second point has nothing to do with Kate's story, which just made me think of it. I believe one reason why marriages don't last in today's world is people have become jaded with the realm of possibilities that the contraceptive devices have opened. I'm not turning into a religious bigot here as I was the 1st in line to make use of those possibilities. However, I will not recommend to my children that they have too many partners. This creates in many people the notion of "perfect" mate which ones keeps on searching in more and more partners. And this makes one become more jaded. The point is that the more partners one has, the more one raises his or her level of expectation which makes any partner less than perfect. Hence, not only is it difficult for one to settle on 1 life partner, but it also encourages one to go and look elsewhere when difficulties in the marriage rise (they always do), instead of solving those with one's mate. This concept which i'm not too good at conveying comes from a wonderful book called "Kosher Sex" that came out maybe 10 years ago. It's written by a rabbi. In it, he explains why the rules of the Torah regarding sex are good to maintain a healthy marriage. There is not even 1 single religious justification here, just plain common sense. That's why I recommend this book to all "married" people (in the wide sense) of any religion. Don't let the fact that a rabbi wrote it stop you, it has helped my marriage and hopefully it'll help yours. I've been thinking about this, and I like the idea that someone mentioned earlier, of sending Joni the alternate song lyrics that sprang up quite spontaneously on the list this summer. I think she might be amused (as we were) at our follies, and hopefuly she'd be touched as well. Of course, there could be a few different gifts from the JMDL (images, card, cover cd's?), but I'd be willing to help coordinate putting together a little book of our twisted lyrics. Any thoughts on this? Agreement? Objections? Is someone already looking into this idea ? They usually put people like that in solitary confinement because they know the rest of the cons hate that kind of person. Honour among thieves and all that. There are times I wonder whether the prison guards don't accidentally on purpose let this kind of thing happen because unfortunately there's probably no one that really cares if someone like that is killed and it's one more problem off the books. Sorry to sound so callous about it, but that's one way of looking at it. I have little sympathy for child molesters but unfortunately most of them probably came from a similar background and so the problem perpetuates itself. I know we all have choice, but fighting off one's inner demons is a fulltime job and most people just give up on it. ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Aug 2003 10:18:16 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: A gift for Joni --- michael o'malley wrote: > Just wondering if there was any talk at the fest of > a JMDL gift to Joni for > her birthday...early November is right around the > corner. From the AP story in today's paper, I quote: "Geoghan was being held in protective custody to shield him from the general prison population, but he still had some contact with other inmates." By now I'm sure you've guessed that another inmate is being held for murder. Perhaps the most telling part of the article is a comment made by David Clohessy, national director of the Chicago-based Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests. He said, "In many respects, Geoghan is not the pivotal figure, it's the people who he wounded and still came forward and the bishops who enabled him." Are you thinking "Oh, where is Hope?" Speaking of Jesuits and astronomy and science and all that, a few years back I read a couple of science fiction books set in the not-too-distant future, where the Jesuits were sending missionaries to other planets. There was a pretty strong link between the Jezzies and the Mafia, as I recall, and attempts to quash a lot of things that happened to this one particular priest who was tortured by these aliens. The book raised a lot of interesting questions regarding who God's children are (do you have to LOOK like an earthling/human to have a soul? is it right to spread the word of God, earth's God, to other planets? in a case of there being two very distinct races on this particular planet, one being a race of carnivores that used the other race as slaves and food, do you have the right to choose which race you're going to work with, and do you have the right to urge the slaves to revolt?) The author is Mary Doria Russell and books are "The Sparrow" and "Children of God." I found them both fascinating, and disturbing, reading and would highly recommend them. ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Aug 2003 12:19:29 -0700 From: Michael Paz Subject: Re: IT WAS NICE MEETING U ALL In the future TRY not to be so damn wordy there Peter!!
