So much has already been said about this year's fest, but I'll just say how absolutely wonderful it was! All of the performances were fabulous - I won't try to list highlights of anything because I know I'll forget something. It was great getting to meet everyone, putting faces to names, and to get up on stage a couple times! I really hope I can go again next year. One question: in woodstock I got CSN&Y So Far on cd (just had it on tape before) and they credit "Jone" Mitchell for Woodstock. Was that on purpose or just a typo? We didn't find out about the power outage until around 7:30 on thursday driving back from new york where we happened to stop in one place that didn't lose power. Luckily we hadn't stayed that night (as I had wanted to to see a friend's concert) or we'd have been locked out of our hotel room for a while and the hotel we were staying at had a tiny lobby! It was really nice here, many more stars visible than usual, but it wasn't at all quiet because of the generators for the hospital nearby. And our power came on at midnight, with everything in the fridge still cold and ice in the freezer still frozen. Are the rotating blackouts still happening? Haven't had one here. It's heating up so we might need to turn the air on soon... bye! There hasn't been a blackout here yet (touch wood!) since our power came on yesterday at about 1:00 p.m. after being off for 21 hours. They keep talking about "rolling blackouts" (which sounds kind of fun, in fact) but so far, so good. It's such a beautiful day here in Toronto that I'm hoping to be able to sleep with windows open and no A/C tonight. I went to Canadian Tire yesterday to get a couple of keys cut. Picked up another flashlight on the way out and noticed... they're selling generators! I didn't get to see how much they wanted and didn't think one would fit in my car trunk - but I did get a tank of propane in case we lose power again. It's such a treat meeting such a young Joni fan - would you like to meet my kids? I have a 16-yr-old daughter and a 13-yr-old son and they don't get Joni at all (yet - I'm working on it - ha ha!) ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Aug 2003 18:02:21 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Come In From the Cold njc or someone will complain --- Mark or Travis wrote: > > I've felt disconnected from the list lately. Those who were unlucky enough not to make it to fest (for whatever reasons) must be heartily sick of the constant "Wow" and "I was truly amazed" and "I have never felt so connected with strangers in my life" sentiments that have been expressed.....as though one voice spoke for us all. But I have to say WOW... I was truly amazed and I have never felt so connected with strangers in my life... I cannot begin to express my continuing personal snapshot memories that slide out of some corner or another at odd points in the days since fest. AS some of you know I had the delightful chance of staying with Mags and Bri in NJ and drove up and back with them.. and I know i have found some sort of missing brother and sister in those two.... thank you from my deepest core for the love and happiness you have given to me. OH you were all so wonderful and awesome in so many different ways... Those who had the guts to perform Joni's songs.. please take another bow.. stand proud for the homage you paid to the woman whose music brought us together. I cannot list favourites........You all know who you are. However......Special thanks to Walt and Bett for their hilarious performances. Like Bobsart I was struck by the sheer humanity, support, love, fellow feeling, common ground, sense of community, joyous songs, tears of sheer amazement at the sheer quality of everything.... Losing the electricity did not matter one little bit on thursday..it was a wonderful and magical experience.. the pouring rain on Saturday that had us under umbrellas on the porch, or watching with umbrellas up through the windows as it was sooooo hot in the performance space... Thanks to everyone for all that they did, the sheer capacity for fun and enjoyment without the prima donna preening that can go hand in hand with so many talented people being in one place at the same time. There was soooo much world class talent on that stage and I felt humbled to be there. Hour after hour of sheer talent and willingness to put their hearts and performances on the line for nothing other than the sheer fun of being there and taking part....... can we make FEST an olympic sport? Fest for me was about so many things.. a rite of passage if you like.. it has changed my life, this list has changed so much in my life in that I no longer feel alone... Attending fest was only possible because of the help I had from the scholarship fund and I shall be eternally grateful for this wonderful gift I received. If I am to mention one person (and I know she will immediately hand out a list of those who helped in the task that she brought to fruition) it has to be Ashara... She knows (from the presents we gave her and the endless, and much deserved, accolades showered on her) how much we value all that she has done. So Ashara thank you from me for all that you have done to make the fest happen and for helping me to get there. I am a happy and tired person after Fest. I am not feeling depressed .....just sooooooooo bloody grateful to have met you all and to have found that the rich layering of your virtual words fleshed in to a terrific family of loving human beings. Fest is about meeting people with whom you will share the rest of your days in some way or another. Cannot explain it but I hope I can tempt those who would not normally go to something like this.. to just take that leap of faith and go. You truly will not regret it. That dull ache sank in again hours before I was to depart from this years fest. The realization that it was coming quickly to an end overcame me and I started having sensory depravation long before my senses stopped being bombarded with so much wonderful music and love. Oh but it hurts so good. Jack, Lane, Alison, and I drove up from Long Island on Thursday night partying all the way of course. We saw the Utility Co. truck tending to the downed power lines a few miles from the resort. Little did we know that we would arrive in total darkness. Lama and Patrick met us with flash lights and led us to Lez cottage where the party was in full swing. It took Victor about 19 songs before he realized that we were there. It was a little crazy arriving in the dark like that, but I soon was in the comfort zone after a few hugs and screams of recognition of things and people that go bump in the night. Thanks very much to the Texas Tush for the "cup in the dark". Thanks to the Lez Cottage gang for such a warm welcome with cold beers and shots of Tequila and a real good jam session over Guzzi's sleeping body. The three evenings of performances were once again mind blowing. Thanks to everyone who helped me with mine and thanks to those who allowed me to accompany them in theirs. Special thanks to everyone for allowing me to sit in on Cajon (a Peruvian drum instrument that emulates the sound of a whole drum kit). Ashara asked me to bring it for her set and I ended up sitting in with Stryngs as well as many other sets. It was the first time I have ever played it on stage altho it has been a part of my home jam sessions for quite a few years now. Ashara commandeered mine to take back to Boston with her so I have to order a new one. For those of you who asked me about getting them, the retail is $390 each on them but I can get them for $234 + freight. They have a few accessories you can get with them as well. Like the pad to sit on, a Zither tuning key (to adjust the strings inside), and a carry bag. Anyone who is interested I would be happy to hook you up with one. It was so amazing to see Rachel and her folks come to the fest. What is more amazing is that Jason is a friend of my friend Bill Dillon (who played with Joni and a million others) who lives in Hamilton. My hat is off to Jason and Karyn for supporting Rachel in coming to the fest. I am looking forward to seeing Rachel perform a set of music next year, and sitting in with a bunch of others. For all the wonderful gifts that I received as presents or I won in the raffle I am eternally grateful. I got some many new CD's to listen to including the new Jaco, Stryngs (this may very well be CD of the year up against some rough competition like EastMountainSouth), Anita, two Lucy Websters, my bitch Giselle's cd, Kay Ashley's CD, a ton of Joni ones, yet another Muller effort, and of course the new found video is just stunning. To Uncle John from my entire family, thanks for the wonderful cheese and cigars. And of course the memories that will be with me forever. I ended up with one of the Song Circle recordings from Friday night. It is a little over 40 minutes of recording. For some reason it cuts out and we missed the last half of that nights song circle. Les if you need any help transferring tapes I would be happy to help. I am gonna tackle this one tomorrow night. Special thanks to Jack Merkel for learning the Nicklecreek stuff. It was great to be able to play those with you in rehearsal and we were all sad that you had to leave early and not perform them with us, you were sorely missed. Can we have a rain check? Just so everyone knows my pics are now up on Chris' site. There is digital proof of Victor sleeping during the performances. And on at least one night I know he went to bed before me. What's it like getting old Victor? And what happened to "we'll sleep when we're dead"? I look forward to the next fest wherever it will be. I like the Full Moon Resort a lot and I think it is a cool place for us. I am also in favor of a roving JoniFest and hope that if we do have some in alternate places, that more people will be able to come. Thanks Anita for letting me touch IT!! To everyone that came this year, thanks so much for filling my life with music joy love and laughter. Special shouts out to all the people who are no longer Jonifest virgins. Hats off to Yael and much love and appreciation for her sound and technical abilities. You found your calling girl, but don't forget to keep playing and singing too. To my travel mates Alison, and Lane and my special bitch Jack for getting me to the airport at that ungodly hour thanks so much. Ashara you done it again love, what the feck were you thinking?
