Hi, Kate & Wally, too! How stupid of me I didn't understood well this! Yep - that's what she's saying, on the Hejira version anyway. In the Shadows & Light version she sings a verse from a blues song in her "Furry" voice. Of course, this follows the line: "But there was one song he played I could really feel" so she's adding that for the effect. My Northeast Jonifest emails are coming in at home, but Jody's email came to me here (where I get JMDL...it's too complicated to bother explaining), and so in true JMDL fashion, she helped me out in response to my expressions of frustration and loneliness by forwarding many of the posts. Thanks to Jody, I've had some of my sadness and loneliness abated through reading what others had to say about our weekend of song and celebration. Alex and I had a blast, sometimes together, sometimes apart. On the non-music front, we took the most wonderful, magical walk into the woods with Miranda, Patrick and Kay. [It was so great that I returned with Kenny B. and the Bobs.] I know you've heard about all the rain and humidity. Well, the good thing about the all that wet showed itself in the forest that was so lush and primordial that Alex swore it could have hobbits in it. The rush of water at the waterfall created a powerful, mesmerizing sound, and the water was cool (okay - COLD) and clear. The variety of mushrooms that grew in the moss and on the sides of trees was extraordinary. The shades of greens were dizzying. Another magical moment in nature - walking back from the delightful two-Daves/Polifka+Jeff cocktail party (thanks, guys) with guidance from Mags and Lucy and in the company of Lieve. We saw great beauty everywhere we went, even in the muddy walkway through which we walked and watched with glee as the mud spurt up between our toes. When did you last feel free and unencumbered enough by life to do that??? When asked to trust them and close our eyes as we walked on the path, Lieve, Alex and I did it without hesitation. Lucy and Mags wanted to share a spectacular view of our Jonifest home, and they made it more special by setting it up for us. Thanks, gals. This was all topped off with a waft of thyme released by stepping on a patch of wild thyme - and yes, a "wild thyme" was had by all. So many wonderful moments - I cannot even begin to do it justice. This was my 6th Jonifest, and I cannot even tell you what I enjoy more - seeing old friends or meeting my new friends. I love watching newbies "get it." I enjoyed meeting and getting to know - if only a little bit - Bobsart, Bree, Marianne, Lucy, Strings, Martin, Jack M., the two Daves, Kenny B., Anita and Steph, Catherine and all those others whose names are with my brain cells in the Catskills. Reconnecting with all the beautiful people with whom I have shared one, two, or - gasp! - five other fests is the gift of a lifetime. The warm hugs of recognition and reconnection gives great lift to my heart each year, and this year fell right into line. Les Ross and I talked about how inexplicable and magical it is that people you have only spent time with on a few occasions were people you would go to the ends of the earth for. How could this be? Ask Bobsart, I think he gets it now. Then there was the music. Oh my goodness. There were so many transcendent moments. What a pleasure it was to sit back and listen again to the sounds of many of the creative artists who make up this list. I loved the soloists; I loved the collaborations. I got dizzy watching Roberto and Chris wearing a path to the stage, generously sharing their talents with all those who asked. I admired the courage of the performers who were scared but got up there anyway. Sometimes the back-stories made the experience all the more special. I'm not going to mention highlights because I KNOW I'll forget...I need to look at the set list and I don't have it with me. Suffice to say that there were extraordinary events each night - and some of them were even on stage! A few returning reporters have mentioned the raffle. I want to thank all of you who donated so creatively and generously to make this the most successful raffle yet. WE NETTED $903! Thanks to the lessons learned from years past we managed to make it go smoothly, we had fun, and many of us went away with fabulous prizes. Start thinking NOW about what you can make/find/steal for next year's raffle. Lori and I will be in touch over the course of the year, so get your creative juices flowing! I know as soon as I click "send" that I'll think of something I wanted to add, but enough from me. I send love and warm hugs out to all of you who were there - I had no stomach for the goodbyes, so mostly avoided them - and send wishes to the rest of you to start saving today for next year. This is not an experience to be missed. Ariving in the dark, like ninjas, and sitting in the candle lit song circle. The showtunes number by Victor from Les Mis, and the opening song of All That Jazz. Outing the host of "Sing Out!" Sugarpants, Sugarpants, Sugarpants, Sugarpants, Sugarpants, and the mime job by Ashara. Jenny, Giselle, Jack, you three really rocked! This was such a scream! Just so those of you who weren't there can share, Walt (a 6'6" guy with a beard) played the part of Joni as a child taking piano lessons from the evil teacher (courageously portrayed by Guzzi) who kept striking his hands with the "noodle" which was a 5' long blue styrofoam swimmy thing. This piece of performance art earned an instant spot in the hall of fame, along with Bette's "Ladies Luncheon" piece and Sugarpants beat poets. > Anita's version of Woodstock, that morphed into a Moby song. That was pure genius. And one of the many moments that brought me to tears, along with her performance of one of my favorite Joni's, "I Think I Understand", especially in light of the intro she gave it. And thanks Anita for your cd!! I haven't fully unpacked yet, but look for it soon on an "NP" near you. And thanks to you & Ashara for arranging to have Joni's Ibanez there for us to see, and even play for those who were tempted. > Also right up there was my first time experience on stage with both the Shadows and Light group and doing the Tracy > Chapman song with Alison and Stryngs.
