I must say I don't agree with you! The "somewhat sincere" assertion just fits with its song's context; when she sings: "Like the church Like a cop Like a mother You want me to be truthful" Well, that's what I call it ingenue of him, don't you think? Are the church, a cop or a mother truthful? Anybody well informed would tell us that isn't so. Joni (at least in this song) is really "disenchanted": could anybody be absolutely sincere? Plus: we do need absolutley sincere people? (this 2nd question is somewhat uneasy, I guess). I think this "somewhat sincere" assertion as one example of many Joni's unequalled fineness and subtleties: She asks for somebody she can rely, who can be trusted yes, but not till the point that he's always saying the Truth (one thing that don't exists one and only); nor she's hoping that he *always* speak exactly according to his thoughts. I did think of this wonderful written song at the "For Free --> Joni as an hypocrite" thread: I keep thinking everybody is "somewhat" hypocrite or at least ironical (not cynical, though): keep apart from me anybody who claims to be "totally sincere", please! Let Freedom, Love & Beauty rule our world! I just wish we were able to stay Sunday night. The entire weekend was filled with smiles, laughter, relaxation, and wonderful camaraderie. It was great to see old friends again, and make some new ones too. There were so many wonderful moments, but some of the highlights and thankyous for me: Having my best friends David Mingus and David Rolls attending their first fest. Mingus finally got to surround himself with Joni lovers from all parts of the world. Seeing Joni's guitar. Yep, thanks to Anita and Stephanie from the U.K. for bringing that beautiful instrument. (and I didn't even touch it) Oh and everyone got one of Anita's CD's in their gift packet. It's WONDERFUL!!! Finally getting to listen to Stryngs live. You U.K. listers are so lucky to have this fantastic band in your own back yard. Chris, Martin, and Stryngs............YOU ROCK, plus you three are so much fun to be with. Lucy Hone...........Queen Lulu, not are you a wonderful singer, you are the best standup comic in the world. You had me in tears the entire weekend from laughing so hard. The harmony workshop led by Jenny Goodspeed. I didn't even sign up for this workshop. I was standing with someone, and we got dragged into the library, because they needed some guys to sing bass. I don't sing, and I can't read music, but Jenny made singing "Shadows & Light" so easy and a lot of fun. Unfortunately, the harmony group was to sing Sunday night, and I left that day. I'm sure they did a great job. Playing Led Zeppelin tunes with Kay Ashley on the kazoo. "Whole Lotta Love" and "Kashmir" will never be the same. I laughed so hard. Watching Ed getting his ass whooped in scrabble by Victor. You're the king of words and music Victor. Gifts galore. We all got some great CDs, videos, mugs, guitar picks AND the JMDL cookbook which I've waited over 4 years for. Many thanks to Doug (and Bob Muller) for the great Joni Mitchell "Let's Sing Out" video. Seeing one of Joni's first television appearances as Joan Anderson in 1965 is incredible!!! The raffle. Maggie did such a wonderful job with the raffle. The prizes were so cool, and I think there was about $900 raised for JoniMitchell.com. I won a really cool Joni Mitchell clock! Thanks to all of you who donated. Two generations of Joni fans. My lovely Mags (and Brian) brought Mags' daughter Miranda. She's just 18, but she has the beauty (inner and outer) of her Mother and it was so cool to see her there. Alison, who's one of my best buds, played and sang her heart out, while proud Mom, Lane watched with a big smile. Ali, I love your Mom almost as much as I love you. Rachel, at only 13 (and turning 14), it was so good to hear you sing in the harmony workshop. Your maturity and love of Joni's music was so refreshing while proud Dad & Mon watched. Talking with Hell on the phone. I've never talked with someone on the other side of the globe before, and I was so happy that Kerry let me talk to you for those precious expensive moments. Oh and Hell, I love the C&S t-shirts that you made. Kerry, it was so good seeing you again, but I know how much you were missing Hell. Finally meeting Bree & Marianne! Oh you two sweet, lovely women that brought smiles and laughs to my face when we would see each other outside our cabin every morning. Uncle John didn't bring the chocolates, but Bree came through with a lovely assortment, and the largest piece of buckeye candy for me. Thursday night, pre jonifest, no electricity or running water. Everyone with flash lights ascending to the Lez cottage for singing and jamming. How did we get so many people in that living room? I had so much fun laughing with Lori, Cindy, Gisele, Susan, Donna, and Lucy that night. Donna *cups* Binkley set a new jmdl record that had me howling, and Susan.........your new jewelry rivals Ed's :~) I love you girls! The folks that stayed at the Morningstar Lodge (6 rooms). Ed & I stayed in the same room as last year. You can wake up in the morning and sit on the porch and read (or drink champaign in my case), and in the distance you can hear the majority of festers talking and laughing as they gather for breakfast. Still, the folks at the Morningstar were great. I met the very sweet and talented Jack Merkle who you could watch peacefully doing some of his Joni drawings on the deck. Bree & Marianne and their pet crow would greet me in the morning. The band "Stryngs" were in the next room. Sweetie's Chris and Martin were always awake before me eating breakfast, but Stryngs would arise about 10:30 walking out of her room with such joyous energy. You'd think she'd been up for hours. Mingus and Rolls were on the other side, and it was so nice to wake up to a different Joni cd every morning. The last room was occupied by Chuck E. and his beautiful wife Barb, who was attending her first fest. It was so nice to chat with Barb in the morning while she *tried* to read her book, and then some chatting with Chuck on the porch before retiring. The Morningstar lodge is the best! Les Ross, you still make me cry when you sing (and that's a good thing). Your warm hugs can only be compared to your wonderful needlepoint. Les donated 4 pieces of art work this year, and I managed to be the highest bidder on one piece. Claudia and John, you're still the best huggers and I'm so glad you agreed to do "Conversation" with Chris Marshall this year. It just wouldn't be Jonifest............and I still think you sing better than Joni on that song!!!! Steve Polifka, you rock. When you sang C&S and "Two Grey Rooms", my heart was melting. You and my good Florida buddy Jerry were 2 of the first festers I met back in New Orleans, and being with you two were like we'd just seen each other last week. I'm so glad Steve's "better half", Jeff was able to put up with all the zany Joni people. What a nice man. Even though John Moore and Bette "legs" Benedict don't post on the JMDL list, they have become fixtures at Jonifest. I was so glad to spend more time with them this year. Bette started off Saturday's night performance with a hilarious number. You two are so filled with laughter and life. Kenny B., and Bobsart...........it was finally so nice to put a face with two such wonderful listers. Bob, you did a great job on that guitar Friday night, and Kenny........you know you're going to have to start making Joni t-shirts for some fund raisers. An embarassing moment for me was meeting Ron Greer who traveled all the way from South Africa. I was supposed to be his ambassador.........I even brought touristy Florida shirts for him. I met Ron when we first pulled into the parking lot. I introduced myself, and he said in a VERY HEAVY South African accent "I'm Ron", which sounded to me like "I'm Brian". I said "nice to meet you Brian", and he tried to correct me, but it wasn't til the next day did I realize........OMG, he's Ron, I'm his ambassador, I'm supposed to be showing him all around. Anyway, Ron has a heart of gold, and I hope he forgives me for being a shitty ambassador. Suze, Roberto, Yael, Patrick, Lama, Catherine, Walt, Lieve, Rose, Barbara.........I didn't get to spend enough time with you guys this year, but I enjoyed the time we had........and you all add so much to this gathering every year. Jack Nielson, thanks so much for your wonderful CD, for your big hugs, and for your wonderful performance Friday night. I was so glad you were able to attend at the last minute. Heather, my Scottish sister, you did another GREAT job with the name tags, and even though you were there for a day, it was sooo good to see your smiling face. Niki, you're the daughter I never had. Thanks for the great conversations, your great music, and for *listening* to your mean ole man. Maggie & Alex, you guys did such a wonderful job with the raffle, plus you two are so much damn fun to be around. kisses to you both! Jody and Scott (the other guy), I'm so glad you were able to make it this year. Jody, you look GREAT, and it was so good seeing you again. Thanks so much for the wonderful anniversary cookbook! Muller and Paz, what can I say..........YOU SUCK!!!! :~) Just kidding. You two have been a part of my life for ever. You both have done so much for this list, and for all the Jonifests. You are my brothers for life..........and I thank you for putting up with ED all weekend. Mags, I have to mention you again for all the hard work you did this year. I had no idea how much you helped Ashara with this years fest. Thanks so much for all you do. You know how much you mean to me. Les Irvin.......thanks for being yourself. Thanks for keeping this list together, and thanks for not kicking me off the list for anything that Ed might have said, did, didn't do, touched, taken off, .....etc.....It's not my fault :~) To Ashara and Stephen, I've seen the two of you blossom in one year. You two really compliment each other. Ashara, you seem much more relaxed this year, so I think Stephen has played a part in this. You've become a part of my heart, both of you. I thank you for all your hard work. You went way beyond the call of duty to put this fest together. Thanks so much for making it all work again. Bob Murphy, you know I couldn't say goodbye (or even see ya later). I would have cried too much. I LOVE YOU!!!! I'm sure I left some highlights and people out, so please forgive me. Thanks to everyone for such a wonderful Jonifest! Thanks to my life partner (Ed) for going on another vacation to see the "joni people". This year's Jonifest, as always, was THE best ever! (HOW can it keep getting better and better and better every year?) It started with some not good news.......Les Irvin had his car broken into Wednesday morning, and all his stuff (and I mean *all*- laptop, phone, clothes, DAT recorder, tapes, etc.) *except* his mandolin was taken. He sent an e-mail to me saying he wasn't even sure if he would make it. Another e-mail arrived once we arrived at Full Moon said that Barbara Little had broken her back a few days earlier, but still wanted to join us! Both arrived safe and sound, and the weekend began. Highlights for me, (and these are only the very tip of the iceberg, as a *real* highlights post would take several days for me to write) are: .....the OPENING CEREMONY!! .....watching Anita and Steph open Joni's guitar they bought on e-bay, (and trusted me to take delivery and bring to fest.) I honestly can't think of 2 nicer people to have this guitar and I know they will value it greatly. .....the power going out on Thursday night. To attest to the generosity of this group, it did not deter the spirit of the evening one bit, and if anything, brought us all closer together in the dark. (No comments on that one, Smurf!) .....watching Rachel, on her 14th birthday, on stage singing and playing her violin with Stryngs. Even though I had only known her a few days, I was beaming like a proud mother from my seat. .....how much fun the Sugarpants performance was to participate in, and how *difficult to do it with a straight face! (Of course, I had duc tape on my mouth at the time, so it wasn't *that* hard!) (Jimmy, you missed THE best performance of the weekend, right girls??) .....crying my eyes out at "Frank's Song" by Stryngs. (I've heard it so many times, but it gets to me every time. .....looking over at Barbara, who, even though she was there with a broken back, had a HUGE smile *every* time I looked at her! .....all the musical collaborations. It is always amazing to me the amount of talent in this group. It always just blows me away. .....seeing "Joni rocks" springing up all over the place, magically. These were decoupage Joni pictures and sayings on actual rocks, and they literally just "appeared" out of thin air. It was SO incredibly magical and beautiful!! Every time I turned around, there was another in a different building, a different place, and I never saw anyone put it there! .....hearing the thoughts of listers that were not there in person read out loud by Mags. It truly brought all of you into the room with us, sharing the experience in spirit. Thank you to those who sent in thoughts. .....most of all, the joy of being around so many generous, beautiful, loving friends. I was presented with a beautiful handmade book (by Claud) that everyone had their baby pictures in, and wrote such wonderful things to me. I even received a framed Proclamation saying that August 10, 2003 was officially "Ashara Stansfield Day" and everyone was to celebrate it with hugs!!! (Of course, Patrick had to remind me at 1 AM that day that it was no longer Ashara Stansfield Day, and not only was I no longer special, but I should now bow down to him.) LOL!! Too tired to think of all the many, many other special moments, but I trust that my fellow Festers will regale you with tons of stories, gossip, reviews and general info about the fest. For those of you that were wondering about next year, many volunteers have come forward to put on the fest, and all I will have to do is the overall picture. So.........many thanks to all who helped make the fest happen this year and to all that have come forward to make it continue to happen. Hey gang, made it home safe & sound, exhausted and raspy voiced as always, and very happy to have once again dipped my soul into the well for a fill. I'm not gonna go on & on, and a lot of what I would say you've heard. Yes, it was muggy & humid and it rained a lot, but no enthusiasm dampened at all. My 2 favorite parts of any fest are meeting new people for the first time and listening to the evening performances. So many amazing moments as always - many that brought tears to me eyes; to see 14-year old Rachel playing with Stryngs, and assimilating instantly with them was just a summation of what the whole fest experience is about. This thing was more international than ever which really rocked, and intergenerational too. Probably 50+ years between the youngest & the oldest and guess what it mattered not one bit. Just rambling...I have to say thanks again to those who helped me in my performance last night, which really went well for me. Roberto took 2 songs I wanted to do (Joni's "Ethiopia" & Tom Waits "A Soldier's Things") and CREATED sheet music by hand just by listening to the CD and using some other software tools. How many accompanists would do that? Probably none. Also big thanks to Michael Paz, always a pleasure to jam with him, and when I threw "Don't Interrupt The Sorrow" at him he came up with a great arrangement of it. Throw Chris on the bass and Anita on percussion and the result felt very magical to me. Sugarpants take on Don't Interrupt was awesome as well - a BIT different from mine! :~) That's all for now - I'm whipped. More later. Thanks to all of you who kept the JMDL lively while the fest was going on - I was amazed to get home and see over 150 messages in my inbox! I have a guitar student who needed a left handed guitar, something expensive in regular stores. She got a really nice Fender lefty guitar online for a very reasonable price. The shipping and handling was free, and best of all, no taxes!!! I play a 12 string Ovation and love the sound. Mine isn't electric though. Anyway, I just looked online out of curiosity and saw this Ovation 12 string, electric for $580: Ovation CS245 Celebrity Deluxe 12-String Acoustic Electric Guitar (Natural) - S There are lots of good sites to check out online. Hope that helps. Enjoy! I think I've been hit by that same truck. We left on the bus with plenty of time to get to NYC and catch my plane at 8pm. Thanks to Stryngs and co., I was able to leave my luggage at the hotel and go grab a sandwich at a New York cafe, catch the shuttle to LaGuardia with an hour to spare. However, once we boarded the plane, we had to sit in the bloody runway for TWO hours because of inclement weather and so I ended up landing in Atlanta at midnight instead of 10:15 which I meant I had to pay for a taxi ride home instead of $1.75 to take the train....a total drag. I was talking to Jody via cellphone while I sat in the plane and remembering how much more enjoyable it was to spend the night after jonifest eating dinner on Plum Island and watching the sunset. But as it has already been said, this year was definately the best ever...thoughts and impressions coming soon. good night, Victor Victor Johnson New cd "Parsonage Lane" available now Produced by Chris Rosser at Hollow Reed Studios, Asheville http://www.waytobluemusic.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Aug 2003 02:06:01 -0400 From: ljirvin@jmdl.com Subject: Today in History: August 12 1973: Rolling Stone's Random Notes page noted a few weeks after the fact: "It was quite a treat for the fortunate few who squeezed in: Joni, Neil Young, and the Eagles performed [tonight] at the Topanga Canyon Corral, a tiny club in the L.A. canyon.
