Heather, I'm sorry your experience wasn't better. I found just the opposite at the H.S. reunions I've attended, except maybe the 10th. When I went to the 15th, 20th, and 25th, I found that the cliques had all disappeared. The jocks and the snobby girls that never said a word to me in high school were very friendly. I even took Ed with me to the last three, and he had a blast. Even though a small number of my class knew that I was gay, I REALLY came out at the 20th. The class president was acknowledging various people during the sit down dinner........i.e. people that were class officers, people that excelled in sports in H.S. He then brought up the girls who were homecoming queens, prom queens, ect..... He said "Could we have all of the queens stand up?". YEP!!!! I stood up with the rest of them, and the room went wild with laughter. I was *out* to everyone with Ed by my side, and everyone was really cool with it..........even the jocks. I'm looking forward to next year's 30th! I remember when it came out in the LA Times magazine and Joni was on the cover in one of her most beautiful photos. This was the year she started touring again after a 15 year hiatus. So some of us thought we would be getting a fantastic Joni interview but instead we got Ani's, as she admits, agenda-driven tome. Ani's bright and brilliant but, IMO, she's still young and did not seem to appreciate that Joni *had* lived her life as a feminist, without the label, back in the time before women had many of the protections, regard and opportunities that women like Ani enjoy today. I think that even though Ani gives Joni praise as the "greatest," while she sorts of crticizes Joni as archaic, it comes off as a bit of lip service because Ani doesn't or isn't able to comprehend what Joni really went through as an artist and a woman. My first reaction was that Ani was trying to juxtapose herself with Joni, and her ultimate conclusion (or conceit) was that "I'm cool and current and Joni, though great, is not." I thought it was kind of yucky but on second reading years later, it doesn't irk as much. We had a big class of 650 students with a ruling clique of about 20 kids who dominated everything. This left a small outer circle of nerds and a vast outer circle of 600 trying to make it through high school in abject anonymity! Well the brains (the nerds) and numbers (the other 600 "nobodies") rose to the top in the end. Every one of my reunions has been a revelation. At the 10th the nerds had all become doctors or millionaires and had become gorgeous and by the 20th they were happily retired. The clique hardly showed for the 10th and 20th and by the 30th I think only one attended. Meanwhile the nerds and the nobodies (my group ;-) have all become great friends and have 3 days of after-parties each reunion. I knew we'd made it when a couple of clique members started calling me up months before each reunion to say they wanted to hang out and ask where the after-parties were going to be. heehee!
