It has a regular symetrical form, it uses conventional harmonies (good, but very jazz-traditional) and is easily hummable. I believe Eddie Jefferson wrote words to jazz first; not Jon Hendricks. In fact Lambert and Ross may have done it before Jon. Turbulent Indigo 8. Ladies of the Canyon What is more amazing to me is my second 8 favorite Joni original (studio recorded) albums (in order) 9. Night Ride Home 10. Mingus Prediction - Mingus will move up in rank someday when I get close to it. Question - Does anyone out there have 4 or more of my second 8 in their top 8 ? Answer to Question "why the top 8?" - looking for the 'above average' originals :-) Here are my favorite 6 non-original albums (in order) 1. Shadows and Light 2. Miles of Aisles 3. Travelogue 4. Hits 5. Both Sides Now 6. Misses Today I listened to Bob Dylan's greatest hits in my car. Very strong lyrics. Good songs melodically. Pretty good variety. Mediocre vocals - his unique if imitable style notwithstanding. Inferior musicianship. Suggest putting this CD and Joni's Hits into your CD changer some day in search of answer to question of comparability. Perhaps I should apologize to Joni for putting their names in the same paragraph, but it's been done before, so I assume she is inured to it. Looking forward to Friday. Oh, she very much is Kerry...but Ani doesn't always say what people want to hear, and they don't exactly see eye to eye on everything. Her tendency to not couch her words and to not necessarily agree with even her idols & mentors is one of the many things I admire about her. This excerpt from a Mojo interview: MoJo Wire: You wrote a Los Angeles Times Magazine article on Joni Mitchell in which you noted that Mitchell was uppity, so the press painted her as a bitch, whereas Dylan, who was also uppity, was considered rebellious. Obviously, times have changed. So how do you think this uppity Ani DiFranco person has been portrayed? DiFranco: Well, I basically get stereotyped a lot in terms of being a girl and writing "chick" music for teenage girls or something. I think, if anything, the press kind of, because of my gender and my age, tends to kind of relegate my work to this sort of special-interest group. It's part of the cultural dynamic, I guess. MoJo Wire: Mitchell hated to be compared with other female musicians. Does that bother you too? DiFranco: Well no, actually. I don't hate being compared with female musicians. I don't mind that at all. I have no problem with seeing connections between women's work. On the other side of the coin, I hate it when people don't recognize the work of women as being universal, or having any import to the world at large, as opposed to men's work, which is generally tends to be seen as more universal -- men's writing about their own experience tends to be put in a broader context. Well, I am happy to agree, and concede that S&L is my number 3 overall - but if I had put it on that list, I would have had to drop LOTC from my top 8 (and I fell in love with her on that, my first Joni album). I didn't mean to imply Ani did not think highly of Joni. I just went back again and read the LA Times article and it upsets me less than on first reading. However, I think the interview is still more all about Ani and what she wanted to hear from Joni about feminism and didn't (with a few pointed, arguably offensive musings tossed in) than a broad Joni interview. The article is here and included is Joni's management's response to it. http://www.jmdl.com/articles/view.cfm?id=150 Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Aug 2003 23:03:33 -0700 From: Michael Paz Subject: Re: survival of the list w/out the inner circle LMAO! The festival program read: "Joni Anderson - Joni is a relatively new performer on the local folk music scene. She began her singing career in 1964 with an appearance at The Depression in Calgary and The Yardbird Suite in Edmonton. After gaining acceptance in Western Canada, Joni decided to move east and seek her fortune in Toronto. Since her arrival last fall, she has enjoyed performances at several coffee houses--The Bohemian Embassy, The New Gate of Cleve, and the Underground, to name a few. Joni is also noted for playing the tipple--an eight-string instrument slightly larger than the ukelele."
