It's interesting that you should say this, because here in the UK, the media has given Blair (and implicitly Bush, through their similarity of policy) quite a rough ride. Still, paranoia exists that we're being very carefully fed. Seems, to quote the old phrase, that's it's not a question of whether one is paranoid, just how paranoid one is. > And, am I the only person who found the video of the > Hussein brothers in extremely poor taste? Skeptical me > thinks that was more for U.S. citizens' benefit than > for the Iraqis. I think our media is in general more skeptical of UK.gov than that in the US (although I have no evidence to back this up) but the same story was told here: that the photography/videoing of the dead brothers was ultimately for Iraqi consumption: the reporting from Iraq indicated a great deal of skepticism on the part of ordinary Iraqis that these were indeed Saddam's sons, and that positive proof was needed. But you're right - this places the US/UK in a sticky fix regarding Islamic conventions on burial of the dead vs. a desire to provide that positive proof that the dead bodies are indeed the sons. What the right answer is, was, or might have been is unclear. Mind you, shaving and facial reconstruction would seem to have been a shot in the foot IMHO. - --Chris Marshall chrisAThatstand.org (AIM: Chr15Marshall) "If you're ever lost, I'll beat the world to finding you" Stryngs, "Bobblehats and Beer" Band website, with downloads, at http://www.stryngs.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jul 2003 22:30:22 -0400 From: "patrick leader" Subject: RE: Shameless self promotion (NJC) thank you so much for sending this, janet, and it was nice to finally see a picture of deanna ivy the wonderkitty. a sweet, sad, yet hopeful story... patrick np - late night baroque >-----Original Message----- >From: owner-joni@jmdl.com [mailto:owner-joni@jmdl.com]On Behalf Of Janet >Hess >Sent: Wednesday, July 30, 2003 12:46 AM >To: joni@smoe.org >Subject: Shameless self promotion (NJC) > > >A short-short story I wrote has just been added to the Prairie Home >Companion website. Do you think sending an announcement to some of the radio stations that play Joni's music might draw a few more people in? I think (member-supported) WFUV (Fordham University) might mention it as a "public service" type of thing. I'm sure other list members might also know of other stations that could be useful. Just a thought. Boulder To Birmingham (Emmylou Harris/Bill Danoff) I don't want to hear a love song I got on this airplane just to fly And I know there's life below me But all that it can show me Is the prairie and the sky And I don't want to hear a sad story Full of heartbreak and desire The last time I felt like this I was in the wilderness and the canyon was on fire And I stood on the mountain in the night and I watched it burn I watched it burn, I watched it burn. I would rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham I would hold my life in his saving grace. I would walk all the way from Boulder to Birmingham If I thought I could see, I could see your face. Well you really got me this time And the hardest part is knowing I'll survive. I have come to listen for the sound Of the trucks as they move down Out on ninety five And pretend that it's the ocean coming down to wash me clean, to wash me clean Baby do you know what I mean I would rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham I would hold my life in his saving grace. I would walk all the way from Boulder to Birmingham If I thought I could see, I could see your face. ron (ps - how far *is* it from boulder to birmingham????????? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2003 02:10:42 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: mars in sight! (njc) CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH MARS, coming up! Never again in our lifetime will the Red Planet be so spectacular! This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars, an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the last 5,000 years but it may be as long as 60,000 years. The encounter will culminate on Tuesday, August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles and will be, next to the moon, the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August Mars will rise in the east at 10 p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m. But by the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 a.m. That's pretty convenient when it comes to seeing something that no human has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month. No one alive today will ever see this again. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jul 2003 23:06:00 -0700 From: "kakki" Subject: Re: mars in sight! (njc) Thanks for the info, Wally. Billy King writes: "I remember she was absolutely stunning that night - the best concert I've seen in my entire life (among many). Me and my girlfriend at the time were among the first people through the door, and we ran for the best seats we could get...which were 3rd row on the floor, slightly off-center. Joni was a bit somber at times (her pal Cass Elliot had been found dead in London only a few days before), and I remember she broke maybe three or four guitar strings in a row tuning up for "Help Me!" Joni was brilliant and the audience was adoring. I remember I caught a few of Joni's roses--tossed by the stagehands afterwards (in Louisville - home of the 'run for the roses'), which I kept for many years. It was a beautiful night I'll never forget." - ---- For a comprehensive reference to Joni's appearances, consult Joni Mitchell ~ A Chronology of Appearances: http://www.jonimitchell.com/appearances.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2003 02:45:19 EDT From: BRYAN8847@aol.com Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2003 #379 And, am I the only person who found the video of the Hussein brothers in extremely poor taste?
