Thank you for your nice message! I haven't written much because this last year has been really difficult for me - was on the school board - so much work and so thankless and no time for music and not enough time for family. In June, I was able to leave the board and bought a mandolin (Hi, Les!!) to celebrate my liberation - it is fun playing around with it - it's very different from guitar. I'm glad that it's small as tomorrow I fly to Sweden for two weeks for a work thing and will take it with me because it will fit in the overhead without anyone complaining. I like having an instrument with me wherever I am. I wish I could go to Jonifest and see you, wally, and everyone again. I'm sure it will be a wonderful event, as it was last year. Please think of me when you all sing Shadows and Light - so wish I could be there for that one! I've been getting your music announcements from time to time at my work address. It's always great to see your activities in the music world. I admire you that you do music all the time and I always think of you fondly. I think of your amazing wolf song. Now that I have a bit more time, maybe I can try to learn it from the Jonifest CD. Have been so so busy in the last year - stressed - but I think/hope things are starting to slow down a bit and get better (it still seems a bit hectic, being away from home for nearly two weeks for work starting tomorrow - I will miss the family). I have been on only-Joni digest for the last year and I don't always have time to read everything even in that, so have missed a lot of stuff, I guess. I sure wish I could go to Jonifest this year. It was really a great experience last year and I'm sure this year will be as amazing, if not more so. I will be thinking of you all! Starting with the cover art to her 'mysterious message' inside to the last notes of 'Shadows & Light'. Matter of fact, I almost feel like that was the intention with the song sequencing...let's bait them with a piece of 'Court & Spark'ish pop, like "France", then nail them with something unlike anything they've heard before...Toto, we're not in the city of angels anymore! Then from there Joni seemingly begins the exposition, the tour of the nightspots and the seedy characters, the decaying and broken relationships, the unfulfilled dreams. A series of songs that seem to flow seamlessly from one to the next. Young love kissing in cars slithers away like mouthpiece spit. Every picture has its shadows, and it has some source of light. I have always loved JL ("Jungle Line," not J-Lo!). Kinda strange that I did like this song because for a long time I resented every step Joni took that brought her farther away from "Blue." Now same the "Hejira" I once considered too jazzy is probably my favorite Joni album (for now, anyway). Actually, "Blue" is a classic in one way, and "H" in another. I like 'em both. I suppose that was the benefit of starting my Joni career with C&S, with all of its musical texture. I wasn't expecting the stark solitary sound of a Blue, Clouds, or STAS. With C&S, there were so many sounds that were uniques to my hearing that when those Burundi drummers cranked it up and those grunting synths kicked in it just sounded like more unique sounds. My initial reaction is to yell a silent WHAT?????!!!!!!! I love this album so much, and have loved it from the first time I heard it, so that I cannot imagine a Joni fan (which I know you to be) holding off so long. This leads me to my second reaction, which is pure envy. Envy that you have a Joni album to savor in the here and now as a new experience. You said it, "heaven on earth." I would give most anything to be able to experience HOSL (or Blue, or FTR, or STAS, or Ladies, or...) again for the first few times of really taking it in and savoring it. Speaking of savoring, I have the new Annie Lenox and finally got to listen on headphones last night. When I want to really know an album I like to listen to it as background music for a few turns, letting the sounds wash over me. I usually make note of which songs are grabbing my attention and which ones fade into the background. Then, at some point I climb into my hammock, put on the headphones and reading glasses (hey, I'm 50!) and read the lyrics as I listen. I have done this for years and years and love the ritual. In listening to "Bare" I found some songs, and some portions of songs, that were exquisite. Right now I'm really into A Thousand Beautiful Things, Honestly, Wonderful, Oh God (Prayer), and chances are that will change as the days wear on. By the way, I re-labeled this NJC because even though there is a tad bit of Joni content, the heart of this message is sufficiently non Joni that I thought it best. After some five or six years of this I still don't have the hang of it...of course, if I posted more than once in a while in a big blue moon, well, who knows? lol!! This is a wonderful life-affirming movie, I hope some of you have caught it already and I recommend it highly to those of you who haven't. I put an NJC on it, but it's really easy to tie to Joni. First off, it deals with a girl who desperately wants to be "one of the boys" in terms of the culture & spirituality of her people. Second, she has a very special gift. And third, it was made in New Zealand and featured an all NZ cast, at least as far as I can tell. And whenever they spoke with that accent (and no mention of d*ngos the entire film) it made me think of Hell and her lovely voice, which I love. And Hell, you'll be glad to know that my favorite kiwi phrase is no longer "the d*ngo ate my baby" but rather a phrase that the girl (played to perfection by Keisha Castle-Hughes) yells out when her Dad is driving: "STOPE THE CAH!!!" :~) But all kidding aside, this movie is great and is a real jewel nestled in the midst of all rubbish that ends in "2" or "3". On films, if anyone wants to see a truly great British film that isn't about corsets or plucky underdogs staging a concert/dance/strip, I urge you to see Dirty Pretty Things, which is just brilliant, and has at its core an unforgettable performance from Chiwetel Ejiofor, who is surely destined for great things. JUNGLE LINE!!!!! nothing ever is out of place. she is toying with our expectations. at least on those albums. now my confession: i never thought C&S was such a great album but to many people and critics it is supposed to be joni's best and most accomplished. to me blue and hejira are supernaturally GOOD. That very well could be, Wally. You make an excellent argument. Could it ALSO be that she has a song leftover from a previous project, doesn't want to include it for royalty issues (she has commented about that), then puts it out on the next one (as the leadoff track to segregate it from the rest), then gets down to what she's up to THEN. I don't know, but I think you do make a very strong point with that pattern. The days of albums & tapes "forced" me to listen to songs i may have skipped over before (Jungle Line would have been one), and i am guilty of doing so even still - because of the convenience of cds. But many of the best songs are the ones that a person may skip over at first, let the music wash over them as Maggie stated, then appreciate more fully later upon further listening. I have discovered many more songs by letting the album play through. And I listen more to the whole cd now. You're right, this is a great movie! I actually saw it in Milwaukee with Kerry (I know, it was strange for me, too) and thought it was a great advertisement for NZ! The cast was definitely made up of NZers (most of whom have been in numerous other productions here, both film and television), but Keisha Castle-Hughes was a stand-out. She's a relative unknown, but I can see her going on to bigger and better things - possibly another Anna Pacquin in the making! I definitely recommend people see this movie! And for the record, the Australian movie Rabbit-Proof Fence is also well worth seeing. This one is based on a true story, and is a sad reminder of how native people have been treated through history. And even more astonishing to me, is how recently this treatment was occurring! So, Stryngs has its first proper gig on Thursday night at Lewisham in London. Strings (singer, writer) has sold about 200 CDs at the hospital where she works, and there's been heavy demand for us to gig at their social club there - so that's what we're doing. [London listers: if you're interested in coming along to the gig, it's at the Lewis Club (on the Lewisham Hospital site) and while I'm not yet sure of the time, e-mail me tomorrow (Wednesday) if you're interested in coming along and I'll make sure to furnish you with relevant details.] In support of this, I really needed to get an on-stage monitor wedge speaker thing, and set off to a big music store in London today with the aim of procuring one, and to ask about upgrades for my bass guitar. Which is all well and good, except I walked out with a new bass amp instead. Funny how things work out, isn't it? In my defence, the bass is fine really, and my old amp will do for monitoring purposes so I'm all set - just not in the way I thought I would be. And I have to say, I'm rather smitten with the new gear: a 250w Ashdown head, and one of their 2x10 cabinets to go with. Lovely warm punchy sound, so much nicer than my previous combo. The remaining question is... can I get it to Jonifest? :) Best regards, - --Chris Marshall chrisAThatstand.org (AIM: Chr15Marshall) "If you're ever lost, I'll beat the world to finding you" Stryngs, "Bobblehats and Beer" Band website, with downloads, at http://www.stryngs.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jul 2003 01:15:19 +0100 From: tantra-apso Subject: Re: Bush is so awful(NJC) we didn't get rid of them tho! we are still full of them here! what makes me amused9even tho the situation is dreadful) is the hatred between the USA and and ME when they are so alike! run by religious nuts with a population who also favour religous nuttery....
