Thanks for the concern and warm thoughts. By this time you may have heard that the mutiny of disgruntled soldiers to Filipine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's administration fizzled out. That act of rebellion did not appear to be directed at power seizure and not even a coup d'etat. Actually, the mutiny is significant in exposing top-level corruption and ineptitude in the Armed Forces of the Philippines/ Philippine National Police (AFP/PNP) and the Arroyo administration following American Gracia Burnham's account of AFP/PNP handling of terrorist hostage-taking in Mindanao, including escape of suspected terrorist Al Ghozi. Arroyo is definitely not winning points here in time for her State of the Nation Address today. The mutiny is now the state of the nation. But neither are the other candidates gaining points here, I think. Also interesting was how the mutineers have styled themselves as Magdalo. Magdalo is an anti-Spanish council based in Cavite in 1890s and was run by first Filipine president Emilio Aguinaldo. It had a rival faction called Magdiwang (which is Filipine folk hero Andres Bonifacio's council). Looks like we never really finished the war with the so called imperialists. Except that then it was the Spanish, now its Filipinos against Filipinos. And yes, all things came to a halt last Saturday. No trains, no malls, nothing. Everyone was paralyzed. Surely coup d'etat was nothing new here in the Philippines. The last we had was in 1989, but that one only lasted 3-4 days. For sure, these things will be even worse when 2004 rolls in. The presidential election will be held May of that year. I am okay and classes will resume on Tuesday here. Joseph in Manila > I know it's njc but I'm not sure what list Joseph is > on. Coyote Rick and I saw her perform in Toronto at the homage to Joni. Before she sang, she told the audience what a major influence Joni has been. She sang a kind of punk version of "Lesson in Survival" and a cool rendition to "Dry Cleaner from Des Moines". It's a shame those tribute songs weren't recorded, but I did buy Ember's CD. However, to all lusting after this book, there isn't really anything very special about it, save a few pics of Joni with dulcimer and handmade sweater-vest, available elsewhere. The music is all standard (read: inaccurate) notation, and all the songs are contained in identical form in the subsequent songbook collections. The "Hits" songbook has more accurate transcriptions of Carey and California (if I remember right) with dulcimer tunings. Well...this Tuesday (7/29 - 9pm @NBC) all 5 comics will perform and right after the broadcast AMERICA* VOTES FOR THE WINNER! *(And that means you, regardless of partisanship or greencard status). Please scroll down for voting instructions. FAQ'S about voting for the "Last Comic Standing" : 1) How do we vote? You can vote by Telephone and on the Internet. 2) Can we vote more than once? Why yes, you can. You can vote up to three (3) times from each phone number and from each internet address! 3) When can we start voting? As soon as the program ends on Tuesday (10pm) you can begin voting. 4) How long do you have to vote if you are voting by phone? Good question! The phone lines will only be open for one hour after the show, anotherwords from 10 to 11pm. Try to vote as soon as you can in that hour in case the phone lines get overloaded! 5) How long do you have to vote on the internet? Good news! The internet voting will be available for a full 24 hours after the show, anotherwords until 9pm Wednesday 7/30. 6) What if the phone number is busy? There is a feature on most modern telephones called "re-dial", why not take a moment to get aquainted with it now - so you can be ready (DAD!). 7) What is the number to call or the web address to vote? The specific phone number to vote for me will begin flashing after my set. It will repeat again at the end of the show. The web address will be given out several times throughout and you just follow the instructions at the site. 8) I have other screen names can I vote 3 X from each one? That's brilliant why didn't I think of that? 9) We have several phones can we vote 3 X from each phone number? I don't know ... but it's worth a shot... guess. 10) So, theoritcally if I have a computer, a telephone and a cell phone I should be good for at least 9 votes? Precisely!!! Thank you so much for all your support. I hope you'll vote. I hope you'll vote for me. Hey, if you're still on the fence of who to vote for remember that a vote for me means that raising a kid on fried foods in 'B' clubs for a fraction of the headliners money was not all for nothing! Hello dear Marian! Hope all is well with you and yours in Vienna. I do know about this book, as I bought it a few months ago (I think I paid about $300 for it), then returned it for a refund. It is simply a private press printing of selected Joni lyrics with 8 black and white photos from some graveyard's headstones "tipped in," which is to say that they're glued on to the pages. I bought it because I thought the pictures would be originals of Joni, and also I thought it would be cool to be one of the only people in the world to have it. Thing is, I know all the lyrics by heart, plus I have several copies of The Complete Poems and Lyrics, so without pics of Joan, I couldn't see paying that much for the tome. My advice is to not purchase it if they still want all that money for it. It will probably just sit on your shelf. (the same can be said of hejira, clouds, and canyon as well.) also the two cuts mentioned are among my FAVES on the respective lps. i would agree with the fan who thought pirates out of place on the first lp. i always hated that twittery silly thing. outside of that, that lp is perfect as well. myself, i've always disliked a couple on eveyone's favorite, blue but each to his own. and (in response to an earlier link) i always thought it was obvious that electricity was about carly as well. also, ladies is not cloying or cutesey. its just perfect. that's all. i find morning morgantown one of the most charming songs ever written. i found the thread about for free extremely interesting, and it reinforced my thoughts about joni being somewhat of a cheapskate. this came to me when she was recently complaining about studio time being so expensive. well, yes it probably is... but what price art? it flashed me to the line "18 bucks whent up in smoke." (wahat she couldn't have tipped the ol fortune teller and gave her a twenty?) or "i filled it full of silver and i left the fingers counting.." (again, she couldn't have tipped the poor guy a buck?) i mean this of course in a humorous tongue in cheek kind of way... I mean if we were like the rest of the huddled masses out there we'd be happy with whatever Clear Channel or the top 40 threw our way. So I happily admit to 'getting' Joni Mitchell, being a bit "Twisted", and THANK GOD that I am. :~) > as EVERY cut on both lps are indespensible. > (the same can be said of hejira, clouds, > and canyon as well.) > also the two cuts mentioned > are among my FAVES on the respective lps. I don't necessarily think anyone was questioning the QUALITY of the songs, just their place in the sequencing of their respective records. That being said, I'm with you in thinking that both tracks fit in rather well on those records. As was stated, the line "And a woman was fading in a suburban room" leads right into the songs about suburban decay. Electricity seems to me a bit of a bookend with Blonde In The Bleachers. > > and > (in response to an earlier link) > i always thought it was obvious that > electricity was about > carly as well. That was me...I was just out of the Joni/James/Carly loop back then, playing Hot Wheels or something, so that was not obvious to me, and I appreciate Bob S explaining it to me without rolling his eyes and making me feel like a fool. > it flashed me to the line > "18 bucks whent up in smoke." > (wahat she couldn't have tipped the ol fortune > teller and gave her a twenty?) What if the fortune teller charged $15 and Joni tipped her $3? It's not like her price list was printed on the lyrics sheet. > or > "i filled it full of silver > and i left the fingers counting.." > (again, she couldn't have tipped > the poor guy a buck?) I don't see any evidence of Joni being a cheapskate...I think she's definitely known poverty & hard times, certainly more than I ever have, and she's succeeded in an industry that tends to take advantage of you & suck you dry, ESPECIALLY if you're a woman. > > i mean this of course in a humorous > tongue in cheek kind of way... > Of course you do...and I always love it. Though it embarrasses me greatly to admit it, I am delving into Hissing of Summer Lawns for the very first time this week. In college I bought the LP, flipped when I heard In France They Kiss...then listened on in horror as Jungle Line followed. I was too afraid to ever go back and give it another shot. Such a silly girl I was. Been driving around this week in the warm, liquid summer night, windows cranked all the way down, listening to "Don't Interrupt...", "Shades of Scarlet...", and "Hissing..." over and over and over again. Heaven on earth. Jenny oh and Kate, I really dislike that "extra footage" in Shadows and Light too. It always struck me as odd - b/c the scenes are so literal. During Coyote we see footage of a coyote and so on. And Joni edited it herself, yes? All my Joni buying was done in the 90s, so upon first encountering The Jungle Line all I needed to do was hit that handy button marked >>| and get on with listening to all the good stuff. Interesting: over on JacoPastorius.com I've been extolling the virtues of S&L - it being one of the only pieces of quality live footage of Jaco. Pretty much everyone there is agreed that it's a stunning concert but that they dislike the bizarre extra footage. I hardly noticed it from day 1 when I got S&L on video - I guess I'd got used to Joni and 'art' already, rather than Joni and 'music'. I guess it's perception of the album: I saw it as a Joni thing, so the extra stuff was par for the course. Come at it as a Metheny, Pastorius, Alias, Brecker, Mays, Mitchell supergroup thing, and I can see it jarring potentially. - --Chris NP: Absolutely nothing. 5am, indigestion, awake.
