What's so damn cool about that kind of writing (and Joni employs the same techniques a lot) is that it so encourages interpretation and makes you find a way to relate to it, rather than just present a "fact" or a statement that you either agree or disagree with. For afficianados of the great journalistic sub-tradition of the non-interview, there's a hilarious piece in today's Guardian about one writer's attempt to secure an interview with a former member of the notoriously publicity-shy German pioneers of Electronica [and, if Afrikaa Bambaataa is to be believed, prime influences in the development of hip-hop], which ends up with a wild-goose-chase to Dusseldorf to try to find their studio, the two orginal members of the grou, or indeed anyone who can say anything about them at all. It's priceless. I've just been listening to The Man Machine, which does indeed sound startlingly contemporary, although it also made me wonder who influenced *them*. I can hear a lot of Giorgio Moroder in some of it (and Donna Summer's I Feel Love had come out the previous year) - maybe he's not as hip a name to mention? Anyway, is there a Joni connection, I ask myself? Not an obvious one, but I'm sure someone out there knows better... Don't we all give a certain amount of lip service to protecting the environment? I drive a car (all too often without a passenger), smoke ganja, drink coffee (typically a crop that has a very negative impact on the soil), use plastic ... and I know I shouldn't do any of those things. I do try to be earth-sensitive, but I could do a better job. My sister actually talked to Adam Duritz (lead singer of couting crows) backstage at a concert about it earlier this month... he said the band loved the song and thought that Joni would approve of their cover. Don't quote me/him on that, but I thought it was cool that would think about what Joni thought of them:). Second: maybe somebody can help me figure out if Joni sings back-up in Joan Baez's "Dida." Years ago (when I was 14- I'm 19 now) I was listening to it, thinking "boy, that sounds like Joni... I wonder..." but was never able to find info about it. Are they high-quality, or should I stick with my vinyl? Second question: I recently bought (for $7) at an antique store a music book called _The Music of Joni Mitchell_ with the Clouds painting on the cover and it has sheet music for a lot of early songs JM never recorded (and a poster laid in). For the ones with sheet music I'm okay, since I can read music, but there are song lyrics without music. Do any recordings of these exist that I could somehow obtain? Well.... I was certainly excited about the prospects, even though I found BSN darn near unlistenable, especially from start to finish. (I am able to listen to it now, but only if it's a shuffle mix) So perhaps my expectations were too high. Travelogue was a big disappointment, certainly not the "F" that BSN was, but to me no better than about a C-. The highlights: You Dream Flat Tires, with those nice Billy Preston organ bursts. Should have been higher in the mix, and funkier, but it still raises a pretty big smile. The Dawntreader: One of Joni prettiest songs ever, here decorated with many new colors and touches that really dress it up nicely. This song in particular shows the potential for the project. The lowlights: Pretty much the rest of it...firstly these Vince Mendoza arrangements and huge orchestartions sound so maudlin and uninspired. So many of these songs would have worked better with trios or quartets and lighter touches in general. Particulary songs that are so intimate like "Last Time I Saw Richard", "Cherokee Louise", "For The Roses", "Otis & Marlena"...these treatments are akin to taking an interesting small snapshot and putting it in an overblown ornate picture frame. The songs just don't gain anything from it; indeed it becomes a distraction. Compare the perfect orchestration of "Judgement" in its original incarnation on FTR...absolutely perfect. The arrangement and instrumentation and production on the T'log version can't hold a matchstick to it. Ironically, some of the songs that could have benefited from this treatment (Dog Eat Dog, Impossible Dreamer, Shadows & Light) weren't included. Anyway, I could go on and on, and I really did want to LOVE this collection - but I just can't do it. If Joni is indeed finished, she certainly went out with a whimper instead of the bang that I would have hoped for. Yeah, sorry about that. But no doubt we'll get our just desserts tonight, when we play Australia. We were completely annihilated against the Australian League team last night. And since the All Blacks seem to be "peaking" now, we'll probably be crap again just in time for the World Cup! Especially if John Mitchell insists on selecting Justin Marshall as half-back - my grandmother could clear the ball from the scrum faster than he can (and she's been dead for 10 years) - not to mention the non-selection of Christian Cullen.
