It is a portrait of 8 'songpoets', one of whom is Joni but I think Laura is one of the others. I'll pick up the book in the summer when I'm over there. Anybody out there know of this book? Anybody out there interested in the contents of this book? Anybody out there at all? NJC I'll die a happy woman....I got a ticket from an off duty police officer for 20.00!!! My friend Ernie's (aka I am Huge) review of the show last night....I am exhausted!! LOL!!! A picture perfect NJ summer day was the setting for Americabs first stadium show for Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band in almost 18 years. Many of the tailgate plans ominously went awry. The AOL tailgate moved from lot 15 to lot 14 where no cars were allowed, but Brett and Billy Mac saved the day with some awesome music. The Greasy Lake tailgate moved from lot 4 to lot 8 but the GL babes were as sexy as ever and captivated the Y chromosomes in the asphalt jungle that is the Meadowlands parking lot. The Meadowlands boardwalk setting was a corporate rip-off with warm beer at an unreasonable price. Despite all this adversity, the diehard fans had no problem with making the appropriate attitude adjustment regardless. Kudos to Joezap, the king of the tailgate, who definitely hosted the ultimate party in lot 15B. As far as the show goes, if your favorite album is Greetings From Asbury Park, Nebraska, Tunnel of Love, Tom Joad, Human Touch, or Lucky Town, you need not read any further. If you love Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in all of their cool rocking daddy splendor, then this was the show for you. Seating commentb&I was sitting in section 108 Row 6 Seat 16. From my sight line, I could barely see the front microphones (Bruce, Stevebs, Clarence). This called for a quick move and I was able to self upgrade to 109 Row 6 which was a dramatic visual improvement from only one section over. (I was seated next to a famous Springsteen biographer who was there until he needed to go take a calming piss prior to Empty Sky.) The show opened with the innocuous strumming of Bruce on the 12 string slide guitar as he wailed out the solo BORN IN THE USA. Certainly a surprise for the intoxicated masses but it did have a grounding effect on all of us there and we all behaved as we listened attentively. Next came the duo of THE RISING and LONESOME DAY. The only remarkable thing I can say about these two is that it quickly became evident that the sound system at Giants Stadium was sonically superior and that I could hear better where I was sitting than at any other arena shows I had attended on this tour. Bruce then reached into his old reliable quiver and played THE PROMISED LAND, which is one of my personal favorites. When Clarence blows that happy horn solo and tells the world that everything will be alrightb&well heyb& it makes a huge guy cry. Curiously, the band slammed into MY LOVE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN, which was kind of a curve ball but rocked hard nonetheless. I canbt say that the 55,000 plus in Giants Stadium knew what to do with that one. But when DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN played, they just cut it loose and Cut it loose or let it drag `em down and the band notched another of my all time favorites. The Rising duo of EMPTY SKY / YOUbRE MISSING was greeted by a very respectful Giants Stadium crowd. Bruce did not even pre-amble with his bI need some quiet b request. Good for you, New Jersey! The singalongs followed with WAITING ON A SUNNY DAY where Bruce hung himself upside down on the microphone stand during Clarencebs solo. OK..wait a minuteb& this guy is frigging 53? When I bend over to tie my shoes, I think a blood vessel in my head is going to explode! Whatbs up with that? Then the summertime bouncy tune, SHERRY DARLING, seemed to get the crowd revved up. Little did they know. WORLDS APART was probably the song that demonstrated the virtuosity of the E Street guitarists more than any other played that night. However most of the sophisticated audience fled to the urinals or the Bud Light line for this one. Back to the future came BADLANDS (whoa oh oh whoa oh) and OUT IN THE STREET (uh ooooh..uh oooooooooh) and they knew their role as traditional crowd pleasers circa the Reunion tour. Are you ready? Yes Ibm ready for the band intros and a fun version of MARYbs PLACE. When Bruce wailed bI been missing youb at the end, it was a stoic reminder of what happened across the river almost 2 years ago. Speaking of THE RIVER, Ibd have to say this was the musical highlight of the evening. It showcased the vocal talents and strong keyboards which is the E Street Band. It was nice hearing it in its original context rather than the weird jazzy version played during the Reunion touir. Then we were ready for the band to finish the set with INTO THE FIRE, which I feel is a very powerful and prayerful song. I still wish Clarence would try those bagpipes again to intro the song rather than Patti stretching her octaves. Then something really strange happened. Instead of the end of the main set, the band rocked into a full band NO SURRENDER which had the crowd fully engaged. Without a break, we then hear THUNDER ROAD with 55,000 people telling us about magic in the nightb&way cool. The first encore was opened with BOBBY JEAN. The aficionadobs groaned while I smiled. If you want to know why, just ask me. After Clarence hit the last note on his sole splendidly, Bruce started grinding his guitar up against the microphone standb&start that engine!!! Man oh man, when you get RAMROD in a concert performance, that song is worth the $75 all by itself. It just goes on and on and builds to crescendo after crescendo. Little Steven acknowledged we were in the swamps of Jersey when counting out Boss time. The band left the stage while Roy pounded the keys and then returned. Seeing the band line up like ducks in a row, all mugging for the camera after playing so hard for so long made you realize that if you love what you do for a living, itbs a damn good thing. As the Giants Stadium infrastructure creaked and strained to get the house lights on, the band cranked out BORN TO RUN as the last bank of lights came on around someday Wendy (I donbt know when). Still it was great to see those many thousands of Tramps all united this just once. SEVEN NIGHTS TO ROCK was a fun song to hear and it was great to see the shriv security guards and grandparents in the audience outsinging us young folks. The final encore opened with Bruce paying tribute to the NJ Community Food Bank which is a great great organization and good old Asbury Park which has really shown it can rise up in the last few years. The crowd sat attentively as Bruce tinkled the ivories for the only time of the evening playing MY CITY OF RUINS. Then Bruce made his public service announcement focusing on the war in Iraq. He was careful not to divulge his personal opinion on this matter, but reminded us that the American thing to do was to sit up and take notice. A buzz in the crowd followedb&would we hear Born in the USA again??? Nopeb&it was a deliberate and gospely version of LAND OF HOPE AND DREAMS, complete with some pogoing. We watched Bruce and the band egg on the crowd for enough crowd enthusiasm to coax one more song out of the band. Lotbs of funny mugging and innuendo. Thenb& uh oh.. Kevin Buell running out and switching the guitarb&to THE GUITAR. Wait, this canbt be Dancing in the Darkb&.Holy smokesb&what could it be? Bruce said, bIs this the one?b and those familiar opening chords of ROSALITA just unleashed a tidal wave a crowd hysteria. Yesb&this was New Jerseybs favorite son playing what EVERYONE wanted to hear. We all told him we're gonna play some pool skip some school act real cool stay out all night it's gonna feel alright. It was great to see everyone rocking to this song written over 30 years ago. Then we all sang back to Bruce about our tires being slashed and our machine stuck in the swamps of Jersey. Oh for a frozen moment of that time to be preserved. If only all that euphoria could be vacuumed up and stored in a bottle to be released as an elixir when times are a little rough. Fun is a lame adjective but there is no more appropriate word for it. Finally, the band finished with a fast paced DANCING IN THE DARK complete with the Barcelona vying bHey babybsb echoing throughout the cavernous stadium and sea of dancing hands on the floor. The show was over 3 hours long. We didnbt get to hear the songs no one ever hears. But that really didnbt matter. This was another in a series of great Springsteen concerts. Dammitb&he did it again! It felt no different from dropping into your local corner bar to see the house band play your old favorites. It was our favorite band who had come home to welcome us for a fun night out of rock and roll under a breezy open sky. Rock and roll, and Bruce Springsteen doesn bt have to be complicated to be great.
