True. The two big indie stores in town always have lots of Joni in stock. The owner of the oldest store (Horizon Records) was profiled in the local paper last week, and he listed Joni as his favorite. I visited his shop (recently relocated to a cooler section of town) and found, besides the requisite Joni cd's, a copy of the "Music Of Joni Mitchell" Australian LP, and a HUGE mounted poster from Travelogue, about 4' x 4' square. I was thinking it would be a cool raffle item if I could talk Gene out of it, but shipping logistics would be tricky as it's mounted on foam-core board. Sadly, I believe you're correct. It's understandable though, since almost all of the media -- even NPR, to some extent -- seems to be supporting this U.S. administration. Lately I've been listening to WPFW 89.3 (www.wpfw.org) in Washington DC, which is the only true alternative voice in this area. It's a Pacifica Radio (http://www.pacifica.org/) station and features a great program called "Democracy Now" that seriously questions what the U.S. is doing in Iraq and elsewhere. ("Democracy Now" is also regularly featured on Free Speech TV (www.fstv.org), which can be viewed on Dish Network channel 9415 and some cable channels.) Other Pacifica Radio stations are listed on this page: http://www.pacifica.org/contact/ Warning: you may feel very nervous after listening to Pacifica Radio. This is a good thing, imo. Regarding WPFW, it also plays some really great jazz, blues, and other music!!! Agreed on all counts. I read recently a review of a re-mastering of a Miles Davis recording by SONY-COLUMBIA-LEGACY. They chose to re-issue it on CD, not SACD. The last paragraph says it's already been issued in SACD in Japan. What are they thinking? If they already have an SACD edition made, why would they deny it to potential buyers of Sony SACD players in North America?!?!? Meanwhile the hits package by The Police is out as a hybrid- CD layer and SACD layer both- for the price of a CD. Why wouldn't SONY-COLUMBIA-LEGACY re-release Miles that way??? I'm sure I don't want to know. It's purely a rhetorical question. I guess I'll just have to suffer along with my upgraded amp and save, bit by bit, for a moving-coil cartridge. At that point, I hope that all of these 1/2 speed mastered discs will take on new life! "AJA", "ABBEY ROAD", "C&S". I just got a flawless Japanese promo pressing of 'SHADOWS AND LIGHT" too. Pioneer has a $179 player that decodes all of these: DVD-Audio SACD DVD-Video CD mp3 & CD-R or CD-RW audience recordings :) Pioneer DV-563A is in today's catalog from Audio Advisor. Of course, decoding them isn't the same thing as getting out of the way of the music. As Simon says, "Same as it ever was."
