Dino was one of my favorites and I got the two confused. Dino's son Joli was supposed to be there but got caught up at another event. I hear he is a fantastic musician, too, and he may be at one of the next events. Speaking of Chet Helms, in response to a question as to whether Stanley Mouse's old 60s posters have been reprinted and are available for sale, Mouse said something like he wouldn't know and that Helms owned them/rights to them. Wonder what the story is behind that one. "Get Together" is my No. 1 song from the 60s. (Sorry Joni ;- ) > btw, the "ex-Dead" are now touring as "The Dead" (not as the Grateful > Dead). My dog tends to get sick from eating certain kinds of foods - but I think that's mostly things like bread (I don't give her bread, but sometimes she finds a piece on the road that someone has thrown out there for squirrels or birds, or whatever, and she snarfles it down before I can make her drop it - then we're in for a couple of days of hell.) Oh, and once made the mistake of giving her turkey giblets as a treat - big mistake there! Do you feed them all this stuff raw? (ick!) What about food poisoning? I'll bet Joni has sold large numbers of her earlier stuff on CD (some to people who already had the vinyl, some who didn't). It would be fascinating to know in general all the information about her album sales (the rates at which they've sold, the breakdown of total CD's vs. LP's of the same album); I'd like to see graphs of each album's instantaneous sales between its release date and the present. Is it public information? Do labels protect this information? Do they lie about sales (to avoid paying royalties)? The term "sodomy," which has been defined differently depending on the jurisdictions, the judge and the era it was interpreted, was challenged in part because of its vagueness. "This decision is a victory for all Americans," said Jeff Montgomery, Executive Director of Triangle Foundation, Michigan's leading civil rights organization for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. "The government should not be meddling in people's bedrooms. Everyone has a basic right to privacy and should not live in fear that police could enter their home, arrest them and throw them in jail for adult, consensual sex in their own home. The court has finally corrected one it's most embarrassing decisions ever (Bowers v Hardwick) and affirmed equal protection for gay and lesbian people. This decision is fantastic news for all Americans interested in stepping out of the past and respecting all relationships for what they contribute to our society. Finally gay, lesbian and bisexual Americans can be freed from the label of 'criminal' or 'outlaw' in this country" Lawrence v Texas was challenged mostly because the Texas statute criminalized same-sex only "sodomy." Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund argued that these and other sodomy laws violated the Fourteenth Amendment's equal protection clause because it targeted gay, lesbian and bisexual people for prosecution. The case also argued that the statute violated the fundamental right to privacy. Michigan is one of approximately 15 states have some form of sodomy law still on the books. Michigan's statute "MCL 750.158 The Abominable and Detestable Crime Against Nature" has roots dating back to 1820. Michigan's sodomy laws were stricken down in 1990 (MOHR v Kelly) with plaintiffs from several counties and attorneys from the Michigan Organization for Human Rights (MOHR) and Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund (LLDEF). The Wayne County Circuit Court decision was never appealed by the Attorney General so opponents of the law believe it is already unenforceable anywhere in Michigan. Others argue that because the law is still on the books, it was enforceable until today. "This decision will have and unprecedented impact on the lives of every gay, lesbian and bisexual American," said Rudy Serra, Criminal and Civil Rights Attorney and Triangle Foundation Board member. "The presence of sodomy laws has been the single largest legal obstacle to gaining full civil rights in this country. By claiming that gays and lesbians are felons, anti-gay judges and policy makers have blocked laws allowing equal rights, hate crime prosecutions, and equity in parenting and family benefits." At some point Brenda Walker, who has been off list now for some time, posted Joni's total sales-though I no longer have that post. She also said that Joni's sales around that time for all her albums ("catalog") was roughly 14,000 copies/week. Typically, an artist will get 1 dollar per unit sold (or $56,000/month from just that). Although she would have to pay back the advance the record company lent her to record the album, and bigger bucks yet for the DED era when they were making videos. I know her more recent orchestral releases were self-funded (no doubt at a loss). Also add in publishing income for each unit sold (another 75 cents or so?). Brenda also said: The greater portion of her wealth would have come from those songs being played on the radio, on television, in movies etc. Mechanical royalties from record sales are a pittance compared to that. Both Sides Now has had 4 million performances. Big Yellow Taxi has had 1 million performances. Help Me has had 1 million performances. Woodstock has had 1 million performances. Together these total the same amount as the most performed BMI song ever - - "You've Lost That Loving Feeling". Holland/Dozier/Holland, Paul Simon, Elton John and the Eagles are probably the only other BMI writers besides the Beatles who surpass her in broadcast performances.
