First, Peter Gabriel's IN YOUR EYES, then Stevie Wonder's AS. I keep wondering which song of Joni's would be good for her to do. As far as Christians turning a song or two into "atrocities," I have heard some pretty bad stretches, but my favorites are simply love songs, and they can apply to everyone -- whether it is sung to a lover of the human kind, or a Lover of the spiritual kind. :) Anyway--again, this artist Nichole Nordeman is clever and talented, and very young! We didn't have *the* worst seats, there were rows behind us, but unfortunately because of a pole and a speaker, unless he backed up a few feet, all we could see were his legs... He did one song by himself, it was really great! but I still wish he would've done one more after the greendale ones by himself. I'm going to get the album when it comes out (august?) but i wonder if it'll have the story written out or not, probably not, the songs tell it - it was like a whole play! (that we got to see from the side). Also I hadn't heard Lucinda Williams before, she opened, she was good! It was a pretty long concert, her set was a little under an hour, then the rest was two hours at least, maybe two and a half - i had no sense of the time. I didn't think we'd get to go, it was sold out, but luckily a friend had extra tickets :). If you get a chance to see him on this tour, go! THAT's how they manage to store all the necessary information on a 5" disc. however, it's a moot point anyway since most people don't have LaserDisc Players or a copy of this LaserDisc. I DO plan on purchasing a copy and suggest you do so as well. let's not forget the new ArtWork and "Tour Photo Gallery". i guess it was about two months ago that Joel spent most of an entire weekend reviewing over 50 rolls of film, some 2000+ images and selected close to 300 for Joni to review personally. on monday it was down to L.A. i remember getting a phone call from Joel around 6pm NewYork time, (3:00 pm in Los Angeles). the call was cut short when he pulled up in front of Joni's home. i learned the next day that he didn't get out of there until 6:00 AM the next morning. Damn! talk about a night owl. Joni personally selected and approved every one of the 48 Photos included on the DVD as well as the new Cover artwork. i'd suggest that the purchase is worth it for THAT reason alone. I DO plan on purchasing this release as well. keep in mind that this one will also contain a "Tour Photo Gallery" and perhaps other extras. i hope this helps. andmoreagain, - --------------- simon PS: *What is MPEG? http://www.coolstf.com/mpeg/ MPEG stands for Moving Picture Experts Group. It is a standard method of transmitting digital video and sound in a *compressed* format using *less bandwidth* than the traditional analog method. The first MPEG standard introduced was MPEG-1 which is used to compress film onto regular compact discs (VideoCDs). MPEG-1 uses a low bit rate resulting in a picture similar to VHS video tape. The MPEG-1 data stream supports only one video signal and is therefore not used for satellite transmissions. MPEG-1 uses either 25 or 30 frames per second and is therefore not very well suited to storage of interlaced video. MPEG-2 is becoming the de-facto standard in the digital TV world. MPEG-2 fixes many of the problem inherent in MPEG-1, such as resolution, scalability and handling of interlaced video. It allows for a much better picture (studio quality and up to HDTV levels) and allows multiple channels at various bitrates to bemultiplexed into a single data stream. It was officially adopted by ISO and has the catalog number ISO 13818-1. Program producers (like NBC, HBO et al) prefer to use MPEG-2 to distribute their programming because they can transmit multiple programs in the same space as a single analog transmission. Satellite and cable companies also like the idea of digital compression and it allows them to offer much more programming versus analog with the same amount of bandwidth. All licensed US DBS providers (DirecTV, USSB, Echostar etc.) are required by their licenses to transmit in digital format. ------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jun 2003 12:32:58 -0400 From: simon@icu.com Subject: Woman Of Heart And Mind (UK - DVD) i don't know if this has been posted yet so ... for the benefit of UK JMDL members WOMAN OF HEART AND MIND - UK - DVD Forthcoming UK RELEASE JONI MITCHELL Woman Of Heart And Mind (2003 UK Region 2 PAL DVD) featuring Rare 60s & 70s performance footage, Previously unreleased audio recordings, Home movies plus bonus Interview Outtakes, 'Joni In Her Own Words' and Photo Gallery, Discography and Travelogue! (Freeze in the bathroom!) NJC Kate asked: "occasionally in our lives we hear a song which makes us pull off the road to listen to or which, like jenny, we stay in the car to listen to though we are tired...so, which ones have done it for you?" Well I don't drive the car so often but I know exactly what you mean and I had that experience in the bathroom! (That is an English bathroom, i.e. where there is a BATH :-) - not a toilet - - ooh can I mention that word with Americans present?) Back to the story: this was in early 2000. I had given up on "popular" music since the 80s, still can't stand that robotic electronic stuff. I thought I just had to accept that music was something for youngsters and I was past it. I had a busy life and just sometimes, like a guilty secret, dug up the "old ones" like Dylan and Steely Dan. So I was in the bathroom, on a Sunday morning, sorting out the laundry and listening to Desert Island Disc on the radio with as interviewee the actor Simon Callow. He chose mainly classical pieces. Then he said "This singer has one of the most beautiful voices in the world. Like Maria Callas, the voice just comes from heaven. He died tragically young, drowned in a river. His name is Jeff Buckley, the song I've chosen is Lilac Wine." I had never heard of Jeff Buckley but knew the song from Elkie Brooks. And then he started singing, and I just froze. I stood there, dropped the laundry, and enjoyed music again as I hadn't done in years and years. When the song finished I waited for them to repeat the name, then I stormed down the stairs looking for a pen and paper, mumbling "Jeff Buckley, Jeff Buckley" to make sure I would not forget the name. The next day I looked him up on the internet. I bought his album Grace and found it was wonderful. But more than just discovering a great new singer from the nineties (though he was already dead), it gave me the belief that music had "become good" again, that it was worth opening my ears again and finding out about new music. And I haven't stopped since... I don't know how I survived without music for so long, I feel younger now than I did 10 or 20 years ago. So that's my story... You may have it by christmas, hehe! When the dough started rolling in, she set up a non-profit foundation. She works for the foundation and her Mom manages it. She's into charity work too. She has her head on straight. Or so I thought until I saw a woman with her name and her face all over the newsstand. Jewel is lost. Our little intellectual went out and had all the right implants and is all over the pop magazines in her underwear, leaning over to give maximum exposure to her new exposure. I'm sure she's made a calculated move and I hope she's right. My fear is that once a woman "positions herself" (pun intended) as a pop icon, she can't switch back to being the "thinking-person's-songwriter". Back in pre-historic days someone would have said, "Jewel sold out". Ol' Man Lama PS, Young people, calling someone "a sell-out" is not a compliment. I'll be praying for her eternal soul tonight. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Jun 2003 03:27:45 +0200 From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?Emiliano_Pati=F1o?= Subject: Re: cd burning question NJC Hi, Garret! I use Nero burning software (it went here along with cd burner) In a "song" (track, I suppose) properties (I right click on it) there's a way to pull out the 2 seconds delay and setting it at zero. By doing with ALL tracks, I run Nero express (one icon in tool bar switchs quickly between them), marking "no delay between tracks" spot Properties' track also offers a wav editor in wich one can cut some extra silence (or even a very disturbing noise as a CRACK! at The Gift Of the Magi has in my copy) As you see is very easy... if one has the right software (naturally, not simply copying a disc, but compiling it, you know) BTW: I go crazy about CD's possibility of skipping... and repeating, too! Bob, Last weekend I was visiting my dad in the hospital and in the gift shop there I heard an incredible sort of abstract version of "Jericho" that sounded like Jaco, Klein, Tom Scott and Brian Blade were all playing on it! It was almost as if it were retooled by Joni herself as a cover. I've done some searching but haven't put my finger on it out there yet. Have you heard of it? But that doesn't mean they don't exist...I'll see what I can dig up from my end, if you can uncover any other info I'd be grateful. "Jericho" was one of the songs that Joni played with Jaco & Brecker on the '79 tour, but to hear a recording of that in a hospital gift shop would be stranger than fiction. Thanks as always for your interest in the project. When I picked up her debut CD, one of the things (or two) I noticed besides the really great songs on it was that she had a very ample figure. My hunch is that she didn't have to trade on it in the past and now she does. As she hasn't produced anything in a long while that has interested me I haven't been following her career. But you are right in that her new project is very embarrassing and one that she will not be able to recover from in terms of credibility. She'd have to do a Joni cover to get me to buy another CD of hers. ;~) Bob NP: The Replacements, "Answering Machine" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Jun 2003 00:20:37 EDT From: Murphycopy@aol.com Subject: Re: Ani Difranco NJC long Dear Alison, Thanks for sending these Ani lyrics.
