I had to buy it on vinyl (the first NEW record I've purchased in a LONG time) because they put 2 bonus tracks on there, "Buick Blues" (a real gritty slow blues-rocker) and "Hang Down Your Head" (a Tom Waits cover which unites 2 of my favorite songwriters!) Like most Lucinda, this record has no market other than those of who appreciate top-drawer songwriting and passionate singing. Country stations certainly wouldn't touch it, nor will rock, or rap. Anyway, Lucinda doesn't care about that; she's more concerned with her own growth as an artist, and thank God for that. My favorite line is in her song "Those Three Days", where she sings: "Did you love me forever, just for those three days"...it doesn't much work out of the context of the song I suppose, but it's a real heartbreaker. He's a little bitter, but you can see the humanity, honor, and jocularity below the surface. The "final exam" was for each of the student to perform one of our songs at the student performance on Sunday/ I think the guy who wrote the waltz about Joe (in response to Joe's waltz about Jais Joplin called "Janis") had the best song. The other weekend students, Jorma, Joe, and Vanessa Kaukonen thought my song was great. It's called "Fur Peace" in honor of the camp, and in honor of Joe I began it with "Gimme an F, Gimme a U, Gimme an R" Joe was laughing, as was Jorma. If you're interested in the song, it's on the ranch's testimonial page at http://www.furpeaceranch.com/referral.htm So, I agree with your estimation of Country Joe. Thanks to everyone for their suggestion and ideas. Bob, it's refreshing to hear about people who care enough about ONE album that they'll fork out $600 to convert it from tape to CD! (and that's $600 US too!) Makes me realize I'm not the only weirdo who does stuff like this & I really must check out this Philips thing, if it's still on the market (hey, maybe the price has gone down by now!) But look at all the other uses you've got for it too. I also realized (d'oh!) that I can do this with the digital recorder I got a year or so ago - you can convert (supposedly) records, tapes, etc. into mp3 format on these mini-discs, then you can upload it onto your PC, then you can burn CDs from there. Maybe a bit convoluted and possibly labour-intensive, but if you're sitting at the computer anyway... I just need to make sure I've got all the cables and that I can find the durn instruction book for this thing. I'll let y'all know if it works. ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Jun 2003 08:47:19 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: 1st timer njc --- SCJoniGuy@aol.com wrote: > Don't be a stranger, and thanks for calling yourself > "Robert" instead of Bob. > One more Bob and we'll have to start numbering > ourselves! :~) Don't start that. Good lord the man can act!! he was suprerb! fantastic!*) It was a pleasant surprise to see his name in hte opening credits. Since seeing S.I.N. (which is the first movie i saw him in, or, more likely, it's the first movie i noticed him in), he seems to be everywhere- new movies, older movies, big parts, small parts..... Often when i go to the cinema, i choose the next film that plays (within reason - i find it easier to walk to the next cinema than go to see something i have predecided to be bad, which usually leads me from the two regular multiplex type cinema's in the city centre to the more arty film venues). I had heard nothing about 25th Hour. How bad could it be? Edward Norton in a Spike Lee movie. I think i was massively underwhelmed by this movie, but, as i say, im not sure. The september 11th stuff seemed, at points, to be just thrown in almost randomly; had little to do with the main flow of the film; did not amass into a coherent "b-story"; just seemed to be going on in parallel to the plights of hte characters. But, when you think about it, it is something still central to people in new york and, well i can only imagine, it probably permeates almost everypart of their lives. Life goes on and the living must live, but New York is still badly scarred. SO perhaps it is in the movie as a reflection of how things really are. At least, that is how i make sense of it. As for that fantasy sequence, i just don't know. Lol; any decent explanations are welcome!! GARRET np- Patti Smith, Where Duty Calls ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Jun 2003 18:46:11 +0100 From: "Garret" Subject: re: 1st timer/hooking up with Joni What a great post Robert; a great way to introduce yourself to the list. Welcome to the mix, hope it turns out for you to be the great journey in music that it has been for me:-) My hooking up with Joni story: When i was a kid (late 80s early 90s) my dad had a number of mix tapes he had made. One such tape is relevant to this little story. It was made mostly of songs from the record collection of one of his brothers, Martin, who then had, in large part, the same style taste in music that i have now. My dad had labelled the collection Singer and Song. There was Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Simon and Garfunkel etc on this particular tape. Ours is a house is which some music is always playing, and it has always been this way. Diana Ross (with and without supremes), Smokey RObinson, Gladys Knight, S & G, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Roxy Music, Blondie and so many others are hte music i was reared on. On this tape there was one song at the end of hte first side that had not been written on the index card thingy. It was a short song. Lyrics along the lines of "Woke up it was a chelsea morning....". It enchanted me - the wonderful, quirky, very natural voice with great "swinging power", the guitar, the lyrics. I asked my dad who the singer was and he said "im not sure; its either janis joplin or joni mitchell". The song stayed at the back of my mind for years. And then i bought a Janis Joplin cd in search of this song. Oddly, it wasn't on the album i chose. So i bought antoher one:-) I had been a Fleetwood Mac fan for some years, and read an interview with Stevie Nicks. SHe cited Joni as one of her biggest early inspirations. So, on a whim, i bought Hits near the end of 1998. Whaddya know....track two, Chelsea Morning. And it has gotten better since then:-) I joined JMDL at the end of 1999 i think. My boyfriend, who hears these vague stories about my "music/Joni group" was also blown away by the CD. We played it four times into the wee hours and he kept saying "so he also sings it and writes all the music and everything??!" "He is incredible!" We both loved it. There were two versions- the Woodstock album version (the naughty one), and the studio Country Joe and the Fish version in which they really did spell FISH. According to Joe: We overdubbed ourselves and workers from the Vanguard Records office answering each yelled command: "gimme an F," "gimme an I," "gimme an S," "gimme an H," and then "what's that spell?" yelled many times -- the answer being "Fish Fish Fish," of course. from his website: http://www.countryjoe.com/ (Thanks Fauchja) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Jun 2003 17:13:21 -0700 From: "kakki" Subject: Re: san francisco njc Debra wrote: > And the weather was perfect (I thought) all month long, sunny and about > 70 F during the day and cool at night, and it was so mysterious feeling > and comforting being enveloped in the morning fog, every day. Ssshhhh....I was trying to sweeten the pot for the displaced Polar Bear from Buenos Aires so he'd feel the extra incentive to visit! ;-) The first few days I was there the weather was painful - thick fog and winds blowing at a steady full gust - felt like 20 degrees - waaah! I kicked myself that I didn't bring an overcoat. But on Saturday the sun came out and it was absolutely gorgeous. I still wore a coat but the natives were in tank tops and shorts. I spent 4th of July week there back in '97 and it was 80 degrees the whole time and I had one the of the most magical times of my life. Been traveling there since the early 70s and the natives are the warmest, funnest and friendliest people around. The key to really falling in love with San Francisco is to walk, walk, walk, walk every neigborhood. Despite the hills, it is easy - like all of these frolicsome spirits and ghosts of land and sea take you by the arm and carry you along and before you know it you've walked several miles and wonder how you did it (and whether there is a Muni line or cable car to get you back). There are surprises around every corner. Stunning cathedrals on impossibly small plots of land next to big brazen strip clubs, the best Italian, Chinese and any food you will ever eat, and everything beautiful in the world confronts you right in front of your face at every step. Photos and film don't come close to how it is to just be there. It is a place where you could never see it all and know it all. The old song is right - you will find the electric power station of your heart there and have to return again and again forever for a recharge. San Francisco is New York on magic mushrooms and Sonoma champagne. Los Angeles is Joni Mitchell. San Francisco is Laura Nyro with a flower in her hair wearing a Kimono. Los Angeles is a big yellow smiley face and where you go to see Disneyland. San Francisco is Disneyland of the world.
