Unbelievable! Following the completely negative responses from the Beeb to my e-mails requesting that WOHAM be shown, I've just discovered that it's being transmitted on Tuesday night on BBC 4 at 9 pm! And I've just ordered the DVD - typical. Sadly, the percentage of the population who can get this channel is not that high but, spread the word. I have to go out but will try to ensure the video is set. I should add that it's only the soapy french movies that ever make it to the U.S. All the ones which might offend american's puritan values never cross the ocean. I'm thinking for example of the classic "Gazon Maudit" ("damn grass") in which a housewife (Victoria Abril) gets into a lesbian relationship with Josiane Balasko in front of her cheating husband Alain Chabat. Hillarious, the same kind of humor as Big Lebovski. This kind of movie is totally mainstream here, shows on prime time TV, yet would never make it to U.S audiences. Back to Ani di Franco, the opening act was a very funny solo guy from NY: Hammell on Trial. Not only is he a great guitarist (not unlike Richard Thompson) but he has a wicked sense of humor. I was histerical with laughter, haven't enjoyed a 1st act as much in ages. So I bought his 2 CDs at the show and he's as much a riot on those too. Tom Green was sitting in for Dave. I was instantly taken in by his music, the performance was all about the guitar and the lyrics, no fancy overdone showmanship. He said his first CD just came out. I went to Best Buy but they didn't have it. I Really think we will be hearing a lot of him, at least I hope so. Now I have to find out if he is touring while in the US. We should invite him to "Jonifest"! I did buy "Bare" by Annie Lennox, it is so beautiful, the writing on the back cover reminds me of how Joni was exposing herself on "Blue," and since they stated Friday on the Today Show that Joni was her biggest influence, I'm sure Joni's honesty and rawness on "Blue" was a big influence on this CD. Nothing would put Americans to sleep faster than a tender coming of age story of a Swiss lesbian. And if the movie is captioned, forget it. No one will show up except for whatever Swiss lesbians happen to be in the US when it's released here. But fart jokes and car crashes continue to entertain us, so if you cosmopolitan types really want to sell a foreign movie here, remember the farts and crashes. Mandy Moore (teen crooner/actress, don't really know her work) is covering a Joni song on a CD called Coverage (also does Elton John, Cat Stevens and Carole King songs). We can only see the tip of the iceberg of how she is affecting the course of music. She is in a class of her own, and we won't be able to grasp the depth of that for at least decades to come. Her's is a timeless talent, like a comet that only comes to the earth every thousand years or so... and when it does, it lights up the sky and raises eyes towards the heavens, waking people up, getting them to see more than they would normally see. I thank God for her and pray for her to be eternally happy.
