Anyway, these parodies (which is in effect what they are) have in this one jimdle's opinion the following going for them: *[1]* They show how much better usually simpler language than convoluted. Very few are talented enough to use this sort of language wisely and well, and that leads me right into: *[2]* Joni's song lyrics are deceptively simple in style. Many of us reflexively think: How easy that is to write! even though we know better. Writing like that takes more than talent; it takes discipline. *[3]* Poetry tends to allow us to use otherwise outdated words in the English language; my favourite is "autochthonous" for some reason. Again, the less often used the better; which is why much traditional mainstream' poetry is pretentious puke; much of it doesn't bother to rhyme or even mean anything. Much of pretentious poetry is not a mainstream but a stagnant estuary inundated with industrial waste and untreated sewage. *[4]* I said all that not to indict all poets (we can all think of at least a handful that do not fit the above description) but to say that Joni's lyrics give poetry a good name. She inspires me; that's been said before, but at least now it's on public records. *[5]* Back to the parodies, they also to some degree burst the pompously inflated way some arrogant so-called "intellectuals" actually talk. I went to college, and I know whereof I speak. You live in a strange cultural environment and after awhile you find yourself taking some very strange types of people as normal. *[6]* Besides, they're so funny I slapped my knees raw; they're funnier than sliced bread. lol, et cetera \\\ tiger-boy /// SBC Yahoo! The cubicle in the office is not unlike the ones you change in at the clothing shops, but it is slightly larger and it doesn't go very high up. Any reasonably tall person would be able to stand up and look over theirs at the person next to them. Most disconcerting. They're all attached together and the result is something like one of those mazes they make rats go through to get cheese at the end of it. We are the rats and our paycheques are the cheese. It's a quick and dirty way of fitting more people into a workspace without having to construct walls and so on. colin wrote: Oh shut up, Colin! Just think of it as a crate for humans. Funny but I was just checking Ani's albums at the store this morning, and there was a lady doing the same thing at the same time. Turns out she was at the show, was stunned (everybody was) and she's a singer/guitarist too. I too explained to her how Joni invented her own open tunings before Ani was even born. That's so true about this exercise. And I also have learned a lot from reading other people's Thesaurus Jonis. (Loved "Saccharine Fowl," by the way.) What's more, I learned that I am not the Joni lyrics expert I thought I was. For example, in "Raised on Robbery," I found out she says, "I like the way you hold your DRINKS," as in "I like the way you don't fall down after drinking too much." I had always thought it was "I like the way you hold your DRINK," meaning the actual grasping of the glass, such as in a suave or cool way, perhaps. --Bob, posting and perched on his perishables when he should be dealing with the fact that this is moving weekend ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Jun 2003 13:07:33 EDT From: Murphycopy@aol.com Subject: Re: Ani di Franco, njc Garret writes: << *i* got to > explain why there was a different guitar for each song to a friend:) > learned that during the years spent earning my degree in Mitchellism from > JMDL. >> I went to a house concert last night and the performer -- Nick Despo -- was talking about Joni and her tunings while he was tuning and talking between songs. I had a Joni moment recently too - I was shopping in a huge new mall, and wandered into a store to look around, and Free Man In Paris came over the speakers! It was so nice to hear Joni, and so nice to hear a less-played song! At first I thought it was a cover - the intro didn't sound the same, but it was the album version. And I was at a friend's house the other day, and they had the TV on the music channel. The Counting Crows version of BYT started, and I said "Oh, yay - Joni!" My friend looked at me and said, "What do you mean?" and I replied that this was a "Joni" song (ie. she wrote it) and she said, "I love this song, and I never get sick of hearing it!" Coming from someone who likes Madonna, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and Michael Jackson (to name just a few) this was definitely high praise! Incidentally, BYT - Counting Crows is still in the NZ music charts (or at least the Recording Industry Association of NZ chart!) - at No. 17!
