Out of curiosity I googled Spencer Tunick and couldn't find the early 90s NYC photos, but did find some Buenos Aires pictures that may include Wally, somewhere: http://www.leedor.com/fotografia/spencertunick.shtml I had enjoyed reading the article so much that I wanted to share it (and thereby resist leaping into the smoking tussle). I liked the way the writer showed the experience to be a mystifying combination of vulnerability and bravado, and something (but not quite *what* exactly) more meaningful than just taking off one's clothes. Interesting. The butt-smacking as applause line made me laugh, too, as did lines like the (also naked) reporter talking about her own experience: "...I discovered that a notebook does not work as a makeshift skirt. ... One of Mr. Tunick's earlier projects, involving nude older women in Australia, began to seem like a better bet in terms of participatory journalism." There was still some concern about the rhythm and meaning of the words. Most of them make me think of the beat poets, and I can imagine the words being read very dramatically with someone playing bongos as accompaniment, and with lots of smoke in the air, and nodding heads, all impressed by the depth of it all. There was an early one with lines like "move through the air to you" (I think by Bob Murphy) that needs an interpretive dancer, with scarves and spiked heels, doing his/her thing while, again, the words are being read very dramatically. I have heard various Ani albums, but knew only one of the songs she chose that evening. her guitar sound is great. and *i* got to explain why there was a different guitar for each song to a friend:) learned that during the years spent earning my degree in Mitchellism from JMDL. One thing i guess i should report was a small joni-esque rant leading into a song (following some chit chat about how she loves parks, and thought the park in Dublin city centre - st. stephen's green - was beautiful, and that a lonesome, self pitying soul should not go to the park when it is sunny as the happy couples are out and parading their relationships. she got a little "eco" for us:-) Her exact words were, if i recall correctly " yea yea yea something about cutting down trees, and then something about developing and builidng over areas that had been sooo beautiful", and so the lead in chords to some song i never heard before and could probably not recognise were played:) She was also charming in her subtle way of asking the audience for a joint. Shocking in a song that is, as far as i could tell, searing of american politics (her last song, and i actually was shocked by the lyrics; one part of it ran along the lines of telling at length how great America is, at which point she stopped singing and said "in the states i often, hehe, get cheering at that point and then i go back into the song with: *and i am paraphrasing from a hazy memory, one that has never been good at lyrics* how long will we teach these lies to our children?" Then later there is a line about "Empire estate is the tallest building in new york.....you want it to come down" Any ani afficionado's know what song this might be? am i remembering it correctly? My boss mentioned how one category of worker in our office was expected to stay within their "box", but another didn't have that box and should therefore be free to think outside of it. I told her, yes, they did indeed have a box as well, but it was a slightly larger box, possibly with a few airholes poked in it. I suppose sometimes size does matter, but a box is still a box. The only thing the cubicle lacks, by the way, is a lid and the way they're packin' 'em in in my workplace these days, that'll be next - so they can fit another layer of cubiclites on top. ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2003 19:40:35 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Joni's poem "The Fishbowl" --- David Callan wrote: > [IMAGE][IMAGE]Hi, this is my first message. > > My friend Russ let me xerox a pre-Ladies of the > Canyon songbook from > Sicquomb about eight years ago, which had the sheet > music to Songs for a > Seagull, Clouds, and "Poor Sad Baby," "Moon on the > Mirror [sic?]," > "Carnival in Kenora," and four others that are > unreleased. But we had to write a poem, right? It was supposed to be blank verse. So I was getting my hair done for some kind of prom deal, because that's the only time we'd go to the beauty parlour in those days. And I was sitting under the dryer, and they had stacks of movie star magazines. The reigning deities, the teenage idols at that time, were Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin, who were newly married. So the tabloids were full of the misadventures of their marriage. And I just felt so bad for them. And I remember thinking to myself, If somebody wrote this about me in the school paper, I would just die. So that's what triggered this poem that had to be turned in for assignment. It was called The Fishbowl: The Fishbowl is a world reversed Where fishermen with hooks That dangle from the bottom up Reel down their catch without a fight Pike, pickerel bass, the common fish Ogle through distorting glass See only glitter, glamour, gaiety Fog up the bowl with lusty breath Lunge towards the bait and miss And weep for fortunes lost Envy the goldfish?
