Bob ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 May 2003 14:48:21 +0100 From: "Garret" Subject: Random things NJC I have listened to the clips on stryngs.com, they are fantastic. At the UK jonifest last summer, i was among a special few treated to about eight songs from Stryngs. We were all bowled over. Utterly. In those moments, the music were my thoughts; experience sublime. I have always been asounded by poeple with abilities to write great music, wonderful songs. When this someone (or someones;-) is a someone you know, it is taken to another level entirely. Yes, Joni can write great songs, yes, Bob can too, but they are "people on cd", they are not very *real* in the context of my daily life. This is part of the appeal of concert going for many i imagine - someone that is so far removed from reality that can make such a mark on us to actually be in the same room, hall, stadium as us is something quite special. I was treated to an early Stryngs performance; the soundclips on the site bolstered my belief that what i had been treated to was great. Stryngs will perform at Jonifest, what an opportunity!!! If it was possible i would scrape together the copper euros (we really should not put an S there from what i hear....), jump on a plane and get myself there, but there are other things happening for me. I will get my Stryngs cd tonight. Chris and Strings are coming to Dublin for a couple of days (ill have a pen for autographs). You see, they are international superstars now;-) I am *soooo* excited to see them again. My big news is that in the last five minutes i had some great news in relation to the Masters Degree that i want to take in London!! I got an unofficial notification, from hte gentleman Doctor that interviewed me over the phone on wednesday, stating that pending my final exam results (which should be through to me in the next week or two and, in honesty, there will be no problem there) i have been accepted inot the course! So, here i come again London:) This time slightly more long term! It is such a shame that the Kashmir Klub has now been closed. When Donna and I stayed in London for four months two years ago, Chris brought us there on our first night. We were treated to an astounding lineup!!! Azeems excitement was quite infectious. We spent the last two years telling everyone that we knew going to London to check the palce out. Hopefully, the next incarnation will not be too long in coming. The course i will undertake is for one year and i am, right now, quite excited, shocked and all those other good things:) Hell, i cannot stop smiling....... I now need to find the cash to cover the fees. Odd jobs anyone? On a lesser note, the deplorable Big Brother started last night. What is wrong with our current entertainment climate? (although, must admit, i *&*$ing love the Osbournes:-) GARRET np- Patti Smith, Upright Come ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 May 2003 10:11:13 -0400 From: "Lama, Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Wall to Wall Joni Mitchell recordings NJC Debra, I have a friend's Phillips CD recorder (CDR950) right here. I hooked up the cables to the recorder's ANALOG inputs, loaded a new blank MUSIC TYPE ONLY cd-r. As I recall, it initialized on its own but it takes about 30 seconds. Then I chose the ANALOG inputs by repeated hitting the REC TYPE button (not the source button!), hit record then PLAY/PAUSE immediately. I set levels (with the track selector knob) and when the time came, hit RECORD again. It takes more steps than just loading a cassette so you might want to practice it in advance with something else. You might want to initialize several discs in advance so when you switch discs, you won't be initializing when the next hour starts. Again, let me know if you need instructions for the CDR950. If your friend has a stereo VCR you can make a perfect, audio-only tape using that. (Borrow the cables from her CD player). It might save you schlepping the valuable CD recorder. All the best, Lama Jim L'Hommedieu You said, >>>>A friend of mine recently told me the signal comes through great in Queens where she lives (all those low buildings!) so I may be spending November 7 there, recording, even if it means taking my new philips recorder and hooking it up to her stereo. And I a gree with David's reply as well, about the tone differences. Really, I believe that the musical arrangement for Judy's emphasizes the positive, optimistic, uplifting side of BSN,while Joni's from Clouds is more reflective and emphasizes the darker, pessimistic side, on balance. I really prefer Joni's title cut from the BSN album to both of those however - - it is a really fine arrangement, and it is easier to sell the song from the perspective of an older person than an ingenue. That said, I have wrestled conceptually with the concept of varying the tone of BSN within a particular arrangement. For an example of what I am thinking about, in STAS, the first half of each verse has a major chord/key tinge to it, and the second half of each verse uses a minor chord type of transposition of the first half. I think something parallel to that would work on BSN, if one had the talent and creativity to execute it tastefully. Maybe someday I will give it a try (but I doubt I could pull it off). This car has all sorts of things. It even has one thing I think is over th top-next to the steering wheel(which moves up and down and in and out), just below, is a comprtment with an ON lever. I couldn't figure out what it was so called the dealer. It turns out it is a little 'fridge' for cooling cans!!! Who needs that? It handles very well and does 65mpg. It picks up speed well and when one overtakes, it can stay in 5th. It has airbags both sides. if John's life cover was more, I'd have opted for just one.... Off to the World Show and the German Lhasa Apso Club show in Dortmund, Germany on Tuesday-driving in my car! Judy plays up the sweetness of the melody, while Joni's version very much plays it down. I'm glad to have both versions. > I think judy collins simply kicks joni's ass on 'both sides now.' > >mack i laughed and laughed when i read this and i totally agree with BOTH of you. one thing that upsets me is when people trash judy's (prettier) version and glorify joni's (more honest, but duller) version. joni had nothing against bright happy melodies. (look at chelsea morning). don't you think its possible that joni's version is a reaction against judy's hit version? (after all joni's version was recorded almost a year later.) that's what i think happened. remember judy did put joni on the map at this point. (of course a talent like joni's could have never been hiddin for long- someone else would have dragged her into the limelight. ie, csn&y's woodstock, etc.) but judy had the forsight and commercial clout to do it first. let's not forget they were also good friends. i'm sure initally at least joni appreciated it. we all know what a bean counter she can be. and, after all, judy was the one who first intoduced me to joni. (how i loved those first dozen joan baez and judy collins albums.) (never mind the sad fact that joni turned into a music genius, recording a good dozen or so A++ albums, compared to judy's & joan's downward slide.) (although both still VERY dear to me) oh, i forgot, lastly: i have a couple takes of pre recorded joni versions of both sides now (live on the bbc). both are much lighter and prettier (much closer to the wildflower's version) than her final stodgy clouds version. thanks guys way too funny-- (mark-you got balls-- i can't believe you weren't attacked here, for that opinion!) recently i was called on the carpet, for my take on for the roses. judy & joni lovin walt The most personalized portal on the Web! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 May 2003 01:54:05 +0300 From: jussi Subject: Re: Eagle Vision To Release JONI MITCHELL Woman Of Heart And MindVideo/DVD 06.03.03 don't know if this has been mentioned, but there's a full page ad for the video on the back of billboard, may 24 issue. - --jussi ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 May 2003 23:28:06 +0000 From: "c Karma" Subject: 3 years ago today... I had her single of 'Both Sides Now' long before I ever bought a Joni Mitchell album. I bought it mainly because I liked the song, not because I was a Judy Collins fan. I've really only come to fully appreciate Judy in the last year or so. 'In My Life' is my most recent Judy acquisition. It's a beautiful record but it is so dark! 'Tom Thumb's Blues', 'La Colombe' (she'd get raked over the coals for recording that one at this point in time), 'I Think It's Going to Rain Today', 'Liverpool Lullabye', 'Dress Rehearsal Rag' plus a few songs that have a kind of black humor to them like 'Pirate Jenny', 'Marat Sade/Sade' and 'Sunny Goodge Street' all of these on the same record make it difficult for me to listen to it very often. 'Suzanne' and 'In My Life' are about the only moments of comfort. My favorite right now is 'Who Knows Where the Time Goes'. What a lovely, well-balanced record! Her rendition of the title track is so beautiful and I love her interpretations of Leonard Cohen's music. 'Story of Isaac' is one I hadn't heard before. I find the biblical story this one refers to very disturbing. To me it portrays a deity that toys with its creations like a cat plays with a mouse. Maybe the Rev Vince or somebody else can enlighten me on this one. I guess the devil made me say that (along with making me buy this dress). 'My Father' is such a beautiful song. I used to think her writing was less than stellar but I have done a 180 on that one. She has written some fine songs. I also love her versions of 'Someday Soon' and 'First Boy I Loved'. But she really ends this one on the dark side with 'Pretty Polly' which almost seems like a throwback to the tradtional stuff on her first albums. > recently i was called on the carpet, > for my take on for the roses. People stated their own opinions about 'For the Roses' but I don't think anyone called you on the carpet. That certainly wasn't my intention. > > judy & joni lovin me too! Mark E. in Seattle PS: My favorite version of 'Both Sides Now' is the one on the album of the same name. I get a lump in my throat everytime I hear it. The voice, the arrangement, the perspective of having grown into the song, all get me right where I live, everytime. Second would be the Miles of Aisles version where she ends it with 'It's life's illusions I recall, I really don't know....I really don't kno-ow'.
