Not only is he gorgeous (he's way beyond a cutie - ask him to show you his upper arms, chest and abs.....), but he is a lifelong Qi Gong practitioner, a Vegan, was planning on being an organic farmer in Martha's Vineyard where he grew up (yes, with his famous mom, Carly), and where he still lives, but seeing as there is little or no financial gain in it, he "fell back on" the only other thing he knows to do: music. I know a couple of the guys in his band and they are sweethearts. Adam McDougal is an amazing keyboardist, and Joe Dunne, a fabulous bassist. Larry Cianca, the drummer is wonderful also, as is the guitarist, Rick. Ben plays guitar in a style like his dad, and yes his voice is unmistakably that of the son of James Taylor (and if you listen, you can hear Carly in there as well). His face is a morph between the two of them, and then some, and he's TALL. He is a very spiritual being, mellow, and very much into the ecological/environmental vibe. His music is somewhere between mellow acoustic rock and hip-hop/Motown. The instore at Whole Foods will be much softer than the concert venue volume. They play loud in concert. When he turned 26 this past January, he gave up smoking cannabis to save his voice, and the song on his "Famous Among The Barns" CD titled "Let It Grow" is obviously about the eventual legalization of the herb. He's quite open about that, in spite of the repressive fascistic presence of the Ashcroft/Bush/Cheney machine. Bless Ben's heart. Who knows what he will do at the instore. He tends to dance, hip-hop style, and sing in the visual style of Eminem (with much more humane and loving lyrics of course), using his hands and gangly body to move about the stage. Be sure and go see him on Dar's current tour that he is opening for (bad syntax there, sorry). He does a 50-55 minute set opening for her, and during one new song he's written that is not on the CD, "Nothing That You Can Do", he brings out Julie Wolf and Steve Holly (Dar's current keyboardist and drummer, respectively) to sing harmony with him and it's gorgeous. Dar also brings Ben out during "The One Who Knows" from her new album to sing a solo verse and harmonize for the chorus, also gorgeous. Dar is obviously quite taken with Ben, in the collegial sense of course. He will be on TV tomorrow/Thursday May 22, at 8PM on the Fox network SummerMusicMania show thing, doing one song from the album, plus a duet with Ziggy Marley. And after he finishes touring with Dar, last show is at Town Hall in NYC on June 7, he goes on tour with Ziggy for a bit, and then.... there is talk of touring this summer with even bigger named artists, so stay tuned: http://www.bentaylorband.com Victor, bring your camera to the instore! And please send me some photos! It was very fun seeing him at The Fillmore this past Thursday, (though they were strict about the 'no cameras' thing, not that Ben cared, but the staff there did). The audience was there 99% to see Dar, had no idea there even was an opening act... nor who it was. At first the audience (the first unseated/all-standing venue of the Dar tour) didn't even want to get up, and had no idea who he was. His first song of the set is the instrumental "Tonight" from the cd, and an extended hypnotic version of it, so ... the giveaway voice didn't clue them in. His intention is to get people to move and dance, and he and the band LOVE unseated venues way more than stiff seated theaters. By the end of the set even the "we are SO not getting up for you" Dar fans, were up on their feet dancing and clapping and moving and boogying. In terms of similar eco-vibe and spiritual/inner-process vibe beings, pairing Dar and Ben on a bill is an amazing wonderful bill. I promised Susan/aka OzWoman on here, a review of Dar, and I'll be emailing that to her separately. But it truly was for Ben, that I went to this show. Catch him in the smaller venues now while you still can, he's charming, gifted and a gem. ~Richard in San Francisco - --------- >Date: Tue, 20 May 2003 12:26:59 -0700 >From: "Victor Johnson" >Subject: Ben Taylor (njc) > >Just found out Ben Taylor will be doing a short in-store performance at >Whole Foods a week from Friday at noon. Hockey arenas were built for hockey. We have a couple of world-class rooms here in town for music. The Symphony and Cincinnati Pops made many LPs and CDs under the baton of Eric Kunzel at our "Music Hall". There is nothing wrong with the acoustics in that room, believe me!! The Arnoff Center for the Performing Arts is a very nice room. Riverbend, owned by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, is an open-air amphitheatre that has the potential for good sound. So why in the world do people still hold so-called "concerts" in hockey arenas? The Cowboy Junkies' "Open Road DVD" has a photo gallery of many of the places they played. There are pictures of a dozen achingly beautiful, very old, buildings in Europe. But then, in the USA, there are nothing beer-puke dives. The photo gallery is aptly entitled "Concert Halls and Shit Holes". It almost makes me sad to be a music fan in the USA. And so, campers, it's against that background that I read today that The Eagles, who can clearly choose their venues, have chosen to play our hockey arena. The Eagles invite the public to spend $153 each for permission to sit on a folding chair to witness the disgusting sound yet again. In addition of course, one must pay another $19 for the privilege of actually purchasing the ticket. Pass. I'm afraid the Kashmir Klub is now closed - they've been turfed out (along with the restaurant upstairs) by the landlord of the building. They did have a keyboard, and their monitoring would appear to have been good, but it's an academic question :( From my experience, the only way to get better at performing... is to perform more. The answer, my friend, is in the tentatively titled Bob Dylan Anthology Project, a biography about the iconic folk singer directed by the Gangs of New York filmmaker. The film, planned for release in 2005, will chronicle Dylan's 1963 breakthrough and the cultural and political influence of his music, Scorsese and his producing partners said. "I've admired and enjoyed his many musical transformations," Scorsese said in a statement. "For me, there is no other musical artist who weaves his influences so densely to create something so personal and unique." In addition to playing in some theatres, the movie will also be broadcast on PBS in the United States and the BBC in the United Kingdom. The documentary is in the tradition of The Last Waltz, Scorsese's 1978 concert film about The Band, which also featured Dylan. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! The Eagles invite the public to spend $153 each for permission to sit on a folding chair to witness the disgusting sound yet again. > > In addition of course, one must pay another $19 for the privilege of actually purchasing the ticket. > > Pass. > > Lama > > PS, The vibes are much better at the Performance Space at the Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, New York. Next week, Representatives and Senators will be in their home districts for a one-week break. An hour of your time could leave an indelible impression. You can see if there's a meeting in your area and register at: http://meetings.commoncause.ctsg.com May 21, 2003 COUNT DOWN TO FCC VOTE ON MEDIA MONOPOLIES Thanks to your efforts, MoveOn.org and Common Cause have collected more than 200,000 signatures on an online petition to FCC Chairman Michael Powell urging him to reconsider his position on relaxing the current regulations. We are presenting print copies of the petitions to FCC officials next week. Just today, Common Cause and MoveOn.org organized a nationwide teleconference with reporters and newspaper editorial boards, explaining the issue and urging them to cover the story, as it has received virtually no coverage from the major television networks. The teleconference included musicians Mike Mills of R.E.M. and Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam. There is still more you can do before June 2. Congress is in recess next week, and with MoveOn.org, we invite you to attend meetings in your district or state with your U.S. Representative or Senator. These constituent meetings are critical in helping members of Congress understand your concerns about the rule changes before the FCC. Common Cause will supply you with meeting materials and be available to answer any questions you might have. Remember: the American people own the airwaves, and broadcasters are supposed to use them to serve the public interest not the interests of a handful of media moguls!
