I had dropped a hint about wanting "the new James Taylor bio" for Christmas, thinking there was only one, Long Ago and Far Away by the late Timothy White. Unfortunately I learned the hard way that there was another, Fire and Rain, which, frankly, is horrible. Somehow, reading about James' masturbatory habits while away at boarding school is more information than I need, and not the right kind to boot. Needless to say, I didn't even finish reading it. Long Ago and Far Away, however, is wonderful. Hi Everybody. Thanks for your welcome and support. I took it for granted that Joni would write her music first and then fit a melody and lyrics, given the esoteric nature of some of her melody lines. Not that the melodies sound contrived in any way! In a song like "Car on a Hill", The melody is so simple (and effective!) that the Choral break between verses seems to come from another planet. Its that kind of moment that really intrigues me about her songwriting, having that kind of imagination is a gift. For the record, thats my favourite Joni song, for the moment anyway! Again, thanks for your help, and I'll try to get involved with other topics too if i can contribute. I read this a while ago, and had the same impression as you did - that he was making some awfully big assumptions, and had quite a few of the facts wrong, particularly about Joni. And I agree, his timeline was screwed up. I can't state any specific examples (since I don't have the book with me right now - it's about 8300 miles away!) but I remember feeling very disappointed. After reading what I knew (or think I knew!) to be incorrect statements about Joni, and her relationship with James, it was hard to take anything else the guy said seriously. And a little more thorough verification of his facts wouldn't have been too hard - a browse through the articles on the JMDL would have cleared up a lot of things, for a start! You Turn Me On was written as away of humoring Geffen, a minor tribute to B. Mitchell Reed, and overall, as a bit of a joke about blatant commercialism. Being a person in recovery, I have to chime in about the drug thing. There are very few people out there who experiment with smack and don't develop a debilitating problem. Snortable Heroin was not readily available back then, and I think her comment about 'trying everything except mainlining heroin' says all it needs to - no further speculation necessary. As far as cocaine goes, Joni has been pretty up front about the mid 70's (and I think probably the 'Wild Things' era as well), and how unhealthy she was after Rolling Thunder. She didn't even want to appear in 'Renaldo & Clara' because she thought she looked awful (and maybe was also suffering from a bit of drug induced paranoia). So, the part of Hejira that was being written while on tour with Dylan & Co. may have indeed involved some cocaine use, but my understanding of the resulting drive across the country was that this was time she used to cleanse herself of all that. Joni told Musician Magazine, in their cover piece about Artists and Drug-Related inspiration, that using cocaine started as a real creativity boosting activity, but soon deteriorated and turned on you resulting in a void. This rings true to me. My impression of the lame JT book is that it's his community's unfortunate answer to our Hinton book; tons of misinformation and specualtion - a giant megaphone attached to the authors' respective assholes spraying nasty, stinky, messy poopjuice all over all of us (after all, all my posts have to boil down to something scatalogical, don't they??). A house concert is a chance to experience music in a warm and intimate environment. It's when someone opens up their home and invites you into their living room to share in a performance by one of their favorite musicians. It's a chance to meet the performers and get them to sign their CD. A house concert is also a great social evening of friends and neighbors. WHY would anyone do this? We open up our home to our friends and neighbors because we want to share great music with them. In the area where we live -- like most of the world today -- there are few venues where people can go to experience great music in a close and friendly environment. Great music makes us happy and we want to share that with others around us. These events allow us to give exposure to some incredible musicians whose talents we truly believe in and wish to help promote." this is a great way to help singer songwriters make an actual living (imagine!) & a great way for YOU to have some of your favorite musicians come to your home to play! its an amazing opportunity for everyone involved... if anyone is interested in hosting one of these, please let me know & i can give you more info! www.katebennett.com "Lyrically, it's a work of art overall. Well, everyone out there, if you want to hear not just an extraordinary song and performance, but a sustained note of unfeasible length, check it out on the kashmirklub.com website under Archives, Audio Files. The note in question is *42 seconds* long!! And more to the point, it doesn't sound like grandstanding - it fits the song perfectly. Marie Claire once told me that the long note wasn't planned, ot at least not planned to be quite that long: it was always a dramatic sustain, but one evening she thought to herself as she sang it, hell, I've got a bit more gas left, let's just run the engine down - and the result is what you can hear. Thanks for your kind words, Martin and Jacky - much appreciated! Azeem in London, recently returned from a superb gig by Eleni Mandell. She did some superb live shows in London around that time too, in tiny venues. She hasn't made a bad record yet, and her last three are all storming: Simple Soul has been mentioned, and it's a truly beautiful collection, very homemade and acoustic as the name would suggest. My personal favourite is Angels & Electricity, which starts with Kitefliers Hill, maybe the best song she's ever recorded (and that's saying something), written by Mark Nevin. Although I am not ready to committ to this 100% yet, I am almost *positive* there will not be another Jonifest that I am involved in. Although I may be wrong, I can't imagine anyone else on this list taking on the financial responsibility of Jonifest (around $15,000) or the legal responsibility of something of this nature. So.....if you are on the fence, or are thinking "next year, next year is when I'll go," you may be very disappointed. This is decidedly looking like the last year for the Northeast Jonifest.
