I read that you put Bob Dylan in your list of top 10 greatest singers of the past century. Bob Dylan? As a singer? A. Yeah. I don't know if that's the category specifically, but top three or four songwriters for me, and if Joe Cocker is a great singer with as little voice as there is there, and we recognize that we can feel the emotion in that raw voice, then there's some of that in Bob Dylan. Also right alongside them is Stevie Wonder as a writer and Joni Mitchell. By the way, if you search in Google's news section (not the general search, the news search), you'll see how often people refer to Joni in interviews, refer to lyrics, etc. Bryan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 May 2003 22:33:30 -0700 From: Casey Certis-Milby Subject: perma-vine Perma-vine #1 is on its way back across the country to Ken in East Meadow, New York (PassScribe@aol.com). Many studies over the eyars, especially more recently, have turned this on it's with a recommendation to eat natural fats(ie butter and that on meat and fish), plenty of veggies(but low glyceimic ones) and low carb(i.e very little bread, pasta, cereals or none at all). Eat what would be considered a 'high' fat diet, meats, and veggies and your choleserol level will drop. However, even the 'disease of numbers', cholesterol, is now being thought of a red herring and that it is another chemical that causes arterialsclerosis-it causes infalammation of the lining of arteries. Pretty soon, most of the advice over the last 20-30 years will be turned around.(cholesterol, btw, is mostly made by ones' liver, not what one eats, and the excess is gentic-however now there is strong evdience to suggest that cholesterol was not the problem anyway)" *** Hey, didn't Dr. Atkins, the biggest proponent of hte low-carb route, just die at a relatively young age? The idea of an extremely low-carb diet is not only unpractical and extremely wasteful in a world with rapidly waning natural resources, but it is phenomenally unhealthy and encourages ketosis, a process which mimics starvation. Weight might drop off, but the side effects (permanently ruined metabolism, among other things) are severe. Carbohydrates are hardly the primary culprit when it comes to American's unhealthy diets -- processed/refined carbohydrates -- and other foods -- are. I know very few people whose diets consist primarily of whole foods who are experiencing health problems, and none of them carefully monitor their carbo/fat/protein ratio. The bottom line: if you're eating a balanced diet featuring lots of whole grains (quinoa, millet, and amaranth are all great alternatives to the far more pedestrian wheat, barley, and brown rice), legumes (lentils, peas, beans), and plenty of fresh produce (along with natural "good" fats), you're more likely to enjoy good health than if you are buying some fancy "no carb pancake mix" made from soy flour for 5.99 a box at your local GNC and cooking up some bacon and eggs on the side. Good health is achieved by food with a higher nutrient ratio and a lower caloric density. That's not saying that we should never have some fun with food or allow some indulgences, but that living almost exclusively out of boxes, packages, and Fast Food joints is what's sending us to an early grave. Hit up those bulk bins -- and the farmer's market! Oh, hey there -- I'm Erin, I'm new to the list, and I enjoy yapping at great length about many things, not just food and nutrition...pleased to meet you all.
