Counting Crowes? Friend: Yeah Yeah! Me (blithely): Well it's one of the most covered of her songs - probably over 500 times now - a guy on the Joni list is collecting them all and he's up to forty volumes of Joni covers at this point (Friend glazes over, speechless, and looks at me like I'm nuts.) Aside from the cheesy synth, there really are some great songs on DED. For example, I can't think of any Joni song that has more 'tude than 'Tax Free.' I love the way the electric guitar comes in on this song, too. And the polyrhythms on 'Lucky Girl' are fantastic. I still laugh my arse off every time I hear Joni sing "booby-prize guys"! I know, I was surprised by that one too, it looks like a simple arrangement of 8 letters into two words but there are all these nuances and twists of the toungue hidden in those letters.... I suggest the only cire is to go there and learn to pronounce it all properly.... AS to the word Valet...... I prefer manservant or maid...... its much easier and avoids that wrong emphasis on either syllable. is it Va-lay or Val-ay. Valet for me means the guy who cleans your car with a steam cleaner, leaves it smelling of wet dog and you sit in seats of an uncertain dampness that ruin your suit jackets so that the maid or manservant have a dickens of a job getting the wrinkles out.... One of my favourite exclamations used by a very eccentric old lady I knew was (in response to people who moaned about anything was "FIE FIE TOTTY POOS AND TUSH!" Delivered in the ringing tones of one who probably "bagged" her first big game when aged two, using a blunderbus, from the back of an elephant!!! Actually she was brought up on a camel farm in the foot hils of some Mongolian out post and lived there until she was 16. Her first language was some form of chinese as she had a chinese nursemaid who travelled with the family...... I have always felt that hell or heaven should be some sort of personal construct so that you really felt bad about the things you could not have.Bearing in mind that you may become used to it, and lose the sense of punishment, there would be an ever changing assortment of things to miss. My idea of hell would have to encompass really bad lift music (elevators to you over there) played on a very thin Bontempi organ (remember them?) and lots of really bad SCAT type jazz, as preferred by Cleo Laine and Jonny DAnkworth. The food would be totally tasteless and have the consistancy of tapioca or semolina but look really good. I would be subjected to wonderful cooking smells such as steak, bread, lamb roasting, but have no access to the food, There would be nowhere to sit or lie down so I would have to stand the whole time and always in a queue with no one who wants to talk. All the books would have blank pages and nothing to read and nothing to write with and also my memory for poems and songs would be really really really patchy not just the temporary brain death I go through on a regular basis... even worse.... I would be aware of some terribly important deadline that required my immediate attention but Iwould not know what the subject was and worry about it all the time. I got one off-list response -- from Randy Remote, I think, but I didn't save it, so, if I now misattribute, I apologize. That correspondent, Randy or not, said that there is only one "Janis"; all others must specify -- and he meant Janis Joplin. Anyhow, it seems clear from the context here that Bryan refers to Janis Ian. Either that, or, if Bryan goes to see Janis Joplin in concert whenever he can, perhaps he'll share with us how he does so! Be that as it may, I'd like to second his enthusiasm for Janis, Joni, Judy and Joan, and add one more J: Jackie (DeShannon). For those unfamiliar with JDS, visit www.jackiedeshannon.com and follow the link to the Jackie DeShannon Appreciation Society after looking over the eponymous site. I suppose it can be objected that JDS is more commercial, and less artistic, than the others, but she has been prolific, has composed and recorded some real winners, looks great at about the same age as Joni and is back at work after a hiatus -- and is given credit for helping to create the folk-rock genre. I have been begging Ashara to stop with all this nice nice approach to the Jonifest and tell it like it really is. But being the nice person that she is, she does not want people to know about all the sex, drugs, and rock and roll that goes on at these things. You really have to read between the lines (no pun intended) of all the reports on the web site. People were jumping from bed to bed like Elizard Taylor for gosh sakes. Shit even Lama got laid (and I understand he is still sore) and he wasn't even trying. Gawd they were screwing everywhere last year. People were dropping right in their tracks and going at it full steam with everyone watching. Of course if the wilder side is your thing, this is your year with WallyK in attendance you can be assured of non stop hot action. Of course then there is this great offer from Bob Murphy, which who in their right fecking mind could pass up??? Of course there is always the bestiality, which we were sworn to secrecy on, but let me just say this, the bears are begging for us to come back and they asked for Julius by name. So what the feck are you waiting for??? Sign up now!!! All the hippie shit is fun too like the workshops, tofu, basket weaving, yoga and the nature walks and the sing alongs, but we all know what you are really coming to Jonifest for. One word of advice, stay away from the brown acid as it is the same shit they have been passing around there for years. Seriously folks DO drop in to Jonifest. It will change your life as it did mine. I am hopelessly in love with the vibe of getting together with so many amazing people. I wish you all good luck over the next few weeks to be able to book your trip and be apart of a wonderful event. BOOK YOUR TRIP NOW!!!!! The bass part on the YES suite called "RITUAL". Right after "Nous Sommes Du Soleil" during the repeated "At all at all at all at all" There's something electrifying about that bass line. When it's clear that the text is going to repeat, I expect Squire to move down but he doesn't. Instead the line jumps up. I know it's coming, obviously, and yet it surprises me everytime. The trick is even right there on the live version on YESSONGS. I'll bet 20 years from now, people are gonna be saying things like that about Alison Krauss and Union Station. Lama, I hoping Victor and Paz come to JoniFest so I can talk about YES with someone. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 May 2003 01:43:46 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: may 8!!!!!!!!!! njc MAKE ROOM MAKE ROOM YOU MORTALS FOR THE BEJEWELED BIRTHDAY FAIRY'S GOSSAMER WINGS AND ITS ABUNDANT QUIVERING BUNS (my, is the BF camp this year of its rebirth!) I enjoy some of the tracks, Good Friends, Shiny Toys, Lucky Girl. I would love to hear the acoustic versions of The Three Great Stimulants and Tax Free, and think I would have a greater appreciation of these songs if I heard them performed in an acoustic setting. For me, the worst thing about DED is Joni's hair. It looked to me like a blind woman's home permanent. While she was suing her dentist, she should have sued her beautician as well. After last year, I continued thanking.... >>>>>> * everyone who came back home this year. (I'm thinking about all of the conversations I SHOULD have had this year with John van Tiel, Claudia, and Bob Muller. Maybe we'll talk next year, folks?) * Jack Neilson. For believing in my little project, "Flags of Many Countries". You have a great spirit and I can't wait to hear the old and new songs on your disc. What's the title going to be? [spelling is now correct and the disc is called "Here I Go Again" ed.] * Cindy Vickery and Giselle Hawkins for making me an honorary Lez, letting me hang out and enjoy the jams on the after-hours party on Saturday night, and occasionally putting [on some kind of har-mony]. "Amos Moses"! Giselle, you rock! * Chuck Eisenhardt for making damn sure that the keyboard players had something to play this year! Even in the song circle! And thanks too for forgiving me for being a dope on occasion. I promise to get organized before the Load-in so I can help out more. * Ashara Stansfield for amassing the army that it takes for an assault of assets and talent like this. What organizational skills! You rock and I'm forever grateful for the welcome you gave me in 01. (And this year.) * Stephanie Morrison. For climbing up on stage this year. It's so cool to hear someone so accomplished and I love the way you did that Tori song. * Christina Friis-Nielsen. Wow! Thanks for coming to America to share your amazingly versatile voice. Not only do you have all of the high soprano notes but you can growl the blues too! * Chris Marshall. It's great to hear how you filled out everyone's sound this year. Way to go! Back to the Garden from the Garden State, Jerseys original Rosalita. * Yael Harlap. My driving buddy. My part-time confidant. You are a very generous soul. I want to stay in better contact this year than last. * Mister Michael Paz. My musical Godfather. My mentor. My big brother, and sometimes, my attorney in delicate matters of redemption. Springsteen would "get" what you've done for me.
