Hey Looori! I think we have all had this discussion, either at fest or since, as silly as it sounds. I would also bet Joni is already aware that a Fest exists, whether she is aware "yet" that it is at Yasgurs farm - I am not sure. But here is the place to dream the dream so here goes ... I wasn't going to tell all, but I just wrote about this privately to Kevin so the cats out of the bag anyway! As I am a dreamer and yes I'm not the only one, I had this idea of what a great documentary the Fest would make. Ya know the friendships and relationships that have developed, the performance, the sharing of Joni as our muse, the community. There would be interviews with festers about their Joni passion, their inner peace at findng the community, Les as the founder of the JMDL, Ashara as Fest Queen - OK SMURPH you can be a queen of something too! Footage of us all at play and living together in peace & love & music for 3 days. I thought not only is this a happening and a love in but with all these OLD HIPPIES, how communal and small our world has become. So it was all innocent .... AND then as I continued my drinking and smoking, I thought what if these observances and interviews were intermingled with Joni being interviewd on her thoughts about this happening or possibly her watching some of the footage and her response. OF course it all would climax with Joni gracing the Full Moon perhaps on closing night. She enters the performance space and slowly the festers realize that it really is her! And she moves to the front and sits and just watches and enjoys. Maybe she does not perform, but goes on stage to talk and field questions. Kind of like "Inside the Actors Studio." I dunno - got any better ideas?! LOL! And Lori I don't mind Suzzi Guzzi at all - in fact think of that as my name on the credits of the documentary. Also thinking about that ride, at least I would take up less room than last year! LOL! Peace, Susan Now about to call in work and take the day off! No freakin reason just feel like it! Well now I need the day to write my acceptance speech to the academy as well. - --- Lori Fye wrote: last year at Fest, Les and I were chatting about whether Joni might ever show up at one of our gatherings. I am so sorry I missed the dirty word thread. I swear quite a lot in both English and Spanish, but it's OK, you can take me to meet your grandma, or the Queen of Sheba, as I do know when to toe the line and and keep my "F...ks" and "joders" and conyos in the right drawer. Anyway, sorry, Emiliano and Mike if I didn't contribute on this one. I would have, honest, if I'd caught the thread. I love the differences in swearing between The States and Britain and Spain and Latin America. I work with bilingual people in a theatre company in Madrid, and we often joke around by literally translating swear words and other slang expressions, like this: "Oh, go and get f ...ed by a fish..." (A great Spanish insult. "que te folle un pez), or "I shit on the milk" (Me cago en la leche) Other expressions : "I am flipping in colours" (Estoy flipando en colores... In other words, I am utterly amazed or gobsmacked.) Then there's, "You are like a goat" (Estas como una cabra - you're nuts); I am going to pass a tit ("Me lo voy a pasar teta" or I'm going to have a great time) , or "Do you fancy a dust?" (?Te apatece un polvo? ... "un polvo" in Spanish slang terms is a "a quick roll in the hay".... etc, etc... Often we do it from English into Spanish, which also provides a bit of a giggle... (Eres unos jodidos nueces... You're f...ing nuts!) You know, things a theatre company does while on the road. We're a bunch of "jodidos tristes"!. Hi all, hard to believe that May is upon us already...May day! May day! Our Joni Covers collection turns the corner on middle age as we release the 'over the hill' Volume #40. Like all the others it's full of thrills and spills, some bad to the bone, and some just plain bad! And also like all the others, I could not have done it without the help of others, in this case: Steve Polifka Joe Farrell my kid sister Chris Susan (OzWoman) (thanks for a great lead) And now, on to the tunes: 1.Alexander & Noelle - Woodstock: This 70's duo from the midwest turn in a very pretty Woodstock...nice airy vocal complemented by piano, guitar, percussion and backing vocals. Very rare and worth hearing! 2. The Film Studio Orchestra - The Circle Game: Pleasant enough muzak version...you could do worse in an elevator I suppose... 3. Triple Trio - Big Yellow Taxi: More college acapella, and not particularly exciting. The lead vocalist is very timid, the group has a hard time with the pacing of the song, and they even do a few unintentional key changes. Other than that, it REALLY rocks! :~) 4. The Group - Both Sides Now: About as creative as their name, sorta like the New Christy Minstrels without the pizzazz. Not that the NCM had any pizzazz, mind you, so you get the idea. 5. The Travellers - Morning Morgantown: MM covers are rare as hen's teeth, so I like this one a lot. The Travellers were a Canadian folk group, they also covered Circle Game on a previous volume. This one has some strings backing and other colors as well. 6. The Little Folk - The Circle Game: 60's UK folk, another fairly obscure recording - very much has an Irish feel to it, and this live recording features the audience doing a bit of a singalong. 7. Julie De Azevedo - Big Yellow Taxi: Love it! Starts up with an extended Jaco-ish bass line, and then kicks in with the full band in a kickin' live version of BYT. Julie is a mormon from the land of Alison, and she usually sings stuff with more of a spiritual bent, so she must have caught this one from Amy Grant. However she did, I'm glad she did because this one's a pretty good little jam. 8. The Olive Branch - Both Sides Now: One has to wonder why they bothered. 9. Barry Manilow - River: I'll bet y'all are expecting me to dis this one, but I ain't gonna do it. Barry made lots of great records, and this take on River may be a tad too lush for MY tastes but he does a nice job with it all in all. Maybe next he can do "Harlem in the Copa Cabana"! 10. Blue Tapestry - Coyote: 11. Blue Tapestry - California: Much has been said about Blue Tapestry, the Joni/Carole King tribute group from the UK, and more deserves to be said! These guys go WAY beyond being a 'copy', and perform all these songs flat out with their own talents on full display. And the songs they pick - oh my! Both of these are superb, and we'll be hearing lots more from them over the next few months. 12. John Munro - Both Sides Now: This guy apparently died of some rare disease or something when he was in his 20's so I guess I shouldn't say anything too bad...but he starts out with "curls & furls of angel hair". I HATE it when they do that! :~) 13. The Greene String Quartet - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: A very different 'classical' feel to the Mingus melody, with some excellent solos and a nice "lazin' down the river" feel to the whole thing. 14. Maggie Anderson & Gregg Cagno - River: What can I say? Maggie & Gregg are both beautiful folks with beautiful voices, and this song is a perfect choice for Maggie's warm voice & Gregg's acoustic guitar. Yum. 15. Andrew Hardin - Just Like This Train: Hey, whaddya know, it took us 40 volumes but we finally got a JLTT cover! This one came out last year, it's an instrumental version, nicely produced. The BEST cover of this song ever recorded! 16. Dana Johnson - Both Sides Now: You know when you go into those cheesy "recording (karaoke) studios" in a theme park and make a record? OK then, you have an idea of what this one sounds like. 17. The Modern Folk Quartet - Big Yellow Taxi: A toe-tappin' bluegrass take...Besides doing a Joni song, this band features none other than Henry Diltz, who took some of the best Joni pics ever! Also features Chip Douglas who would go on to do some work with The Monkees. 18. Therapy - Carey 19. Therapy - Big Yellow Taxi: Don't know much about them, the girl singer sure does have a great voice though. A UK folk group from the 70's, and another hard-to-find recording. 20. The Art Gallery - Both Sides Now: They must have never heard the Olive Branch and decided the world needed another limp washrag version of BSN... So there you have it...your JMDL Joni Covers Volume 40. If you made it this far, thanks for indulging me, and give yourself a high five! When was the last time you walked into > Krogers and heard a succession of Bob Marley, Joni Mitchell, and Stevie > Wonder. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 May 2003 00:07:45 -0400 From: "Lama-Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Re: Joni at work, njc Epilogue: Here in Covington, Kentucky music still holds the power to rock the rafters. Literally. At 10 PM, I stepped over to the volume control about 1/2 way through Bruce Springsteen's "Backstreets". "Hidin' on the backstreets.." "Hidin' on the backstreets.." "Hidin' on the backstreets.." "Hidin' on the backstreets.." "HIDIN' ON THE BACKSTREETS TO= NIIIIIIGHT!" I turned it down and changed the record. On my way back to the computer I found a piece of trim had fallen off the ceiling's light fixture! After the show, Bob Dylan, who was also on the show, returns to Johnny Cash's house with Earl Scruggs, Bob Johnston, and Boudleaux Bryant for dinner. After dinner, they each perform a song, Dylan sang the old standard "These Working Hands." According to Graham Nash, who also recalls a dinner at Cash's, attended by, among others, himself, his then-girlfriend Joni Mitchell, Kris Kristofferson, and Eddy Arnold, Dylan sang four or five songs. Presumably it was the very same dinner. Nash recalls Sara, Dylan's wife, sitting there crying at the drama of the moment. 1983: Joni performed at Zenith in Paris - ---- For a comprehensive reference to Joni's appearances, consult Joni Mitchell ~ A Chronology of Appearances: http://www.jonimitchell.com/appearances.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 May 2003 02:30:05 -0400 From: ljirvin@jmdl.com Subject: Today's Library Links: May 1 On May 1 the following items were published: 2001: "Joni Mitchell: A Work in Progress (A Fan's Perspective)" - JMDL (Biography) http://www.jmdl.com/articles/view.cfm?id=623 2001: "Joni Mitchell: A Work in Progress (A Fan's Perspective) (Part 2)" - JMDL (Biography) http://www.jmdl.com/articles/view.cfm?id=944 ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2003 #267 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
