I won't argue with some of our "we agree to disagree" points because it basically boils down to personal preference, taste and different world views. However, I was intrigued and at the same time enlightened to hear someone like you talk about the Church. That is the type of thing I would want our parish priest or local bishop to talk about when films like Martin Scorsese's _The Last Temptation of Christ_ or Antonia Bird's _Priest_ are being discussed. I can understand their reluctance and probably horror, to discuss the nuances of Church bureaucracy and the controversial nature of faith among people tasked by God to inspire faith among its parish's minions. > I disagree... And no one gets institutionalized that > > fast. I did watch all the deleted things and thought they helped make > much more sense of the story but it shouldn't take 3 hours film time > to get a simple story across. I watched _The Ring_ after I watched the Japanese Ring trilogy, and I thought that the Hollywood version, despite the fact that they borrowed from the three stories, was not really a bad film. I said that because I was obviously bowled by the originality, old-school scarefest and invention of the Japanese films (although the prequel, called _Ring 0_ was not as good as _Ringu_ and _Ring 2_) so that when I watched the Hollywood re-make, I was thinking that THAT version will do for those who don't want to watch all three Japanese films, or just want entertainment. I won't say out loud that I like the Hollywood version, but I thought its not really a bad film despite the sometimes laughable simplification of plot points. It was just entertainment and it delivered. After all, even James Agee once believed in the value of entertainment as something akin to non-profound things that successfully diverted attention. I don't know if I sound like I am defending _The Ring_ because even if its truly inferior to the Japanese version, its not without its merits. Oh Vince, why do I have to explain this long...? > If you can get American playable dvds of the all three Japanese Ring > films I want them - let me know what they cost. Yes, there are three _Ring_ movies. All in Nihongo with English subtitles. The first one is released as _Ringu_ and the second one is _Ring 2_ while the third is the pre-quel to the two films and called _Ring 0_ (as in zero). I don't know what region most American dvd players are compatible, but as soon as I get the three Ring, I will send you an email so I could get your complete mailing address. And you don't have to watch them in 7 days before Sadako makes an appearance in your TV. Sorry, can't resist. > That (_Rabbit Proof Fence_) was one of the best movies I have ever seen and moved > me > in ways that The Fast Runner never did, or that very few movies ever > have. Awww, come on, Vince. I told you to watch _Atarnajuat_ more than once. If you still think its not anywhere near _Nanook of the North_ or anything remotely touching, then I will leave you in peace. > For Julianne Moore's character, I was reminded of the Sissy Spacek > character in The Long Walk Home - a person who grows out of a basic > good > heart in the face of circumstances that they never expected. I love _The Long Walk Home_ and Sissy Spacek in it. I agree that its so real a depiction of a political "coming of age" of an adult. Its one of the few movie characters who is regular, typical, even ordinary, but was made extraordinary by the strange times she/he was in. Sissy Spacek provided the movie with its needed dramatic sparks. And on the subject of this talented woman, I still think that her supporting performance in David Lynch's _The Straight Story_ was the most underrated but terribly heartbreaking performance that year. She was not even nominated that year. The Academy probably want a more bravura performance. They rarely reward underacting and subtlety, because, I guess that won't count as acting to them. That's why I know that Julianne Moore will not be given the award for _Far From Heaven_. (I like Nicole Kidman, though). > I have seen 10 dvds in the last 3 days (turns out I have bronchitis) > and > the ones that I enjoyed most were Japanese, Mexican, Australian, and > only one American film... when I was renting them, the clerk kept > saying, "you know this has subtitles?" Wow, you might (just might) find my dvd collection interesting, then, as I collect mostly from other countries' cinema (although the Philippines is an "other" from anyone's perspective other than us). My current pre-occupation now that school break is here, is watch Kieslowski's films. If you watched his 10-episode _Decalogue_ and his _Trois Couleurs_ trilogy, I would like to discuss it with you. Had great seats, and was taping the show on my MD recorder (forget the anachronism). Joni is wearing a coral pink Miyake outfit. After 2 or 3 songs, all of a sudden a bunch of security guys come barging in. The guy next to me gets thrown out of the concert for some reason. Then the security guy comes next to me, he makes me move sideways, which I do by sliding the microphone which I taped to the rail. He tells me to clean up my gear or he'll take my passport away. This was enough to wake me up (and go to the bathroom). Went back to sleep, and then I was in the middle of an after show party where the Joni fans (JMDLers?) were complaining to the show promoters about all of these events. Guess I must have been traumatized when cops were busting pot smokers in the bathroom and in the aisles during a Stones show in L.A. 91. It was great, I hadn't been before - - they had tons of Beatles stuff, and CSN&Y (including the cover of CSN&Y So Far), and Dylan photos, and autographed guitars of many people, including Willie Nelson and B. B. King (who I got to see in january!), and, of course, tons of Elvis things. And by the time we got there I had run out of film (but the puffins at the biodome are really cute!) :(. It's a good reason to go back, so I can have pictures even if I don't have anything from the gift shop (I wasn't about to spend $30 on a baseball cap). But on the way there, while listening to Amelia, I realised I never thought about it, what was "just a false alarm"? And yes, headphones make it just so much better listening, especially the intro of Hejira. For Trouble Child I have always pictured a hospital or similar situation, "They open and close you", physically, they could be doing that, and different people and doctors all the time, "a river of changing faces", I'm not sure who it is...One other thing I was wondering, on DJRD, who is El Bwyd (split tongued spirit)? This could be an urban myth of course. However, it wouldn't be the only example of such a contraction of a religious expression: others are Crikey (Christ, fairly obviously) and "gor blimey", usually abbreviated to blimey, which is supposedly a corruption of "God blind me." Hundreds of fans gathered to celebrate the dedication of the James Taylor Bridge. The bridge, which was built in 1987, is located on U.S. 15-501 and spans 200 feet across Morgan Creek."This is an exciting day in Chapel Hill," said Doug Galyon, chairman of the N.C. Board of Transportation, who served as master of ceremonies at the event. The naming of the bridge was special because it brought Taylor back to Chapel Hill and because it was important to the community, which has been working hard to preserve the heritage of the Morgan Creek area, Galyon said.Although Taylor was born in Boston, he moved to Chapel Hill when he was 3 years old after his father was named dean of the UNC School of Medicine.Taylor, who grew up in a house on Morgan Creek Road, spent much of his youth playing with the family dog, Hercules, along Morgan Creek, which inspired his song "Copperline."It is an honor to be remembered officially "in the place I grew up and with which I identify myself," Taylor said.At the ceremony, Taylor spoke of his childhood on Morgan Creek. He recounted a cold winter morning during his youth when, while waiting for the school bus, he watched a gang of prisoners chained together and cleaning the side of the road as a chicken truck passed by."It was a different time," Taylor said. "Things have gotten a lot better in many ways. Things have gotten more complicated, too."He said he is fortunate to be able to look back on "a simpler time when I felt connected to the landscape." But he said the naming of the bridge in his honor has given him "yet another reason to feel connected to it.""I feel that there is red clay in my blood," Taylor said. Since moving away from Chapel Hill, Taylor's ever-growing music career has forced him to spend much of his time traveling. His time on the road has inspired his many songs "about traveling trails, about riding the rails, traveling the seas," said Gov. Mike Easley, who spoke at the event. "So it's only fitting that we dedicate the Morgan Creek bridge to him," Easley said. The Chapel Hill Museum, which lobbied to have the bridge named after Taylor, will be opening an exhibit, "Carolina in My Mind: The James Taylor Story" on Wednesday. The exhibit, which has taken the museum more than two years to compile, will include Taylor's Grammy Award, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame trophy and North Carolina Art medal. It also includes photographs from Taylor's early years along Morgan Creek as well as songbooks and other childhood memorabilia. The exhibit includes The James Taylor Documentary Theater, a permanent addition to the museum, which will display interviews and concerts.
