Largely due to her hits like "Looking Through The Eyes of Love" from ICE CASTLES, "Don't Cry Out Loud", and "Fire in the Morning". I bought her TRIBUTE album last year in a bargain store and I was surpised that she can scat very well and sing the jazz standards in the very idiom they were most wonderfully heard and appreciated. Like the other 70s-80s singer Maureen McGovern (who is also big in our 7000+ islands), Manchester can get into the heart of the song and make it hers... Check out her version of "Lady Be Good".... Topanga Home Movies 1968-1969 w/CSNY from 8 mm (I was wrong about the title but I still think the locale is Laurel Canyon and not Topanga and the footage is the same referenced in the show as "Laurel Canyon") 2. Celebration at Big Sur 1970 "Get Together, "Woodstock" 7. Cafe Au Go Go 1971 8. Heart of Gold documentary w/clips "Circle Game" and "Raised on Robbery" 9. In the meantime, another place to try to find the Topanga/Laurel Home Movies is on the CSN tape trading lists, which you can find through internet searches. LOL! Don't you just love sick humour? Here's one I got at work yesterday. You might need to be Canadian to get some of these, esp. the last one, but maybe not (particularly ironic, given we've had ice pellets mixed with snow falling since yesterday afternoon - April really is the cruellest month): Top Ten Reasons Why Canada will not fully join USA in the War on Iraq: 10. We have no way of getting there. 9. We are too busy at home with Maple Syrup Season. 8. After 136 Years, we are still copying France. 7. Saddam's name pronounced backwards is "Mad Ass". 6. Limited potential for sales of Canadian Bacon in Iraq after the war. 5. Our Sea King Helicopter needs repairs. 4. Celine Dion can't sing to the troops - she has a contract in Las Vegas. 3. The Rivers in Iraq are too shallow for our War Canoes. 2. NHL playoffs. 1. Our army is needed at home in case of another Toronto snow storm. ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Apr 2003 07:30:17 EST From: AsharaJM@aol.com Subject: Re: JONI Video footage In a message dated 4/4/2003 6:15:35 AM Eastern Standard Time, kakkib@vzavenue.net writes: > You and Kevin got me to dig out the tapes and I found a partial list of the > items. This first song will be a repeat (since it's on "Hits") but the mix should probably start off with "Raised on Robbery." Assuming this is a "fun" pub where dancing might occur (as opposed to a dark, brooding bar), here are other suggestions, in no particular order - stir or shake: Night In The City A Case Of You ("If you want me I'll in the bar") Love Or Money Jericho (DJRD version) Sunny Sunday Sex Kills (Travelogue version) Ray's Dad's Cadillac Dancin' Clown (many will disagree) Shiny Toys Underneath The Streetlight The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines Black Crow Woodstock (Shadows and Light version) Okay, that's 15 songs - I could go on forever! I noticed at least four: 1. CBC radio interview with Malka Marom and Joni in 1974. Much use is made of this interview as voice-over in the biography. Joni's voice is very young and light. This interview also formed the basis for the Maclean's magazine feature of the same year. 2. CBC radio interview, again with Malka Marom, in 1979. In this interview Joni talks mostly about her work with Mingus. Interesting how her voice still sounds pretty young. I remember listening to this interview when it was first broadcast and hearing Joni bragging about how her guitar playing was getting real aggressive. She said she could outplay any guy! 3. Recent interview, with Joni very made-up and her hair kinda fluffy. This must have been from the first version of the bio. 4. Most recent interview, with Joni sitting at table, her hair very straight and with much better make-up. Interesting that Paul Starr got a make-up mention in the closing credits. In the CBC version of this bio, the closing credits indicate that Malka's two radio interviews with Joni are in the Thomas Fischer archives at University of Toronto. Other little tidbit: Did you notice in the Joni/Kilauren home videos Joni is playing with her grandkids in a backyard and an elderly woman comes out of a door and then quickly goes back in when she sees the camera? I suspect that must be Joni's mother. Which leads to another question: why were her parents not given airtime? Aren't they kind of important? The CBC version, by the way, did not have the Come in From the Cold video segment.
