"it is called dog eat dog, dear" does anyone else feel that things were left out that needed mentioning? within reason this is. heather - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@jmdl.com [mailto:owner-joni@jmdl.com]On Behalf Of Deb Messling Sent: Wednesday, April 02, 2003 10:48 PM To: joni@smoe.org Subject: woman of heart and mind So is everybody sobbing, or what? The ending made me cry. I feel like we're being told that Joni's career is over. That's not a bad thing, necessarily, but it's not easy letting go. As for the rest of the program, WOW. I can't believe all the early footage, and the audio of Joni singing some folk song in that beautiful, clear voice. She was amazingly beautiful, too. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deb Messling -^..^- messling@enter.net - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Apr 2003 00:49:51 EST From: FMYFL@aol.com Subject: woman of heart and mind Next to seeing Joni at the Homage in Toronto, this was a very spectacular evening. What a wonderful and fitting tribute to Joni -- nearly flawless. I say *nearly* because: 1.) I don't believe for a moment that she is done with music. Joni seems to revere artists (O'Keefe, Picasso) who have continued to work well into old age, so I think she'll do the same. 2.) They totally overlooked "Dancin' Clown." I wasn't bothered by the lack of James Taylor content. My guess is that they would have had to get into some pretty ugly 70s stuff (like suspenders and heroin addiction) to tell that story, so Joni gallantly opted to pass over it. But otherwise -- all I can say is that we're right and have been for years: Joni Mitchell is, and always has been, an absolute genius of heart and mind. The one film that he appeared that had the greatest impact was in THE GREEN MILE. I remembered being puzzled why his performance in that film was not accorded an Oscar nomination. But then the Oscar rarely gets it right. His mouse-loving character in that film, plus his tragic death in the film just filled me with an unpleasant sort of aftertaste as it tells you that the gentlest of souls can experience the most excruciating of death. Hope his death last week was not as excruciating. He will be missed. The whole piece was reaffirming for me. As a child once I felt like a child ... and tonight I feel like a child all over again in my adoration. I feel giddy in my joy of her sharing with me and all of you and our "getting" her. And I feel for those who do not, rather than scowl at their ignorance. The early talk and clips so nurtured me, like mothers milk to her young. Seeing the many faces of Joni, not only physically, but her maturation and her continual progression, both musically and poetically. All roads leading her up to Travelogue. A finale - perhaps, but I feel she can never be silenced or silent. As she breathes she will continue to emote creatively, nothing can stop her - including herself. Wait a moment - give her time she will turn again and we will have her encore. By the way, the wine was a bad idea .. as was the herbal enhancement. I fell asleep in the last 20 minutes ... copies anyone??? But I slumbered in peace and joy ... and only woke up to the war and the bloody changes. OH Joan - will you take me as I am - will you? I thought of how I would react NOW to meeting Joni face to face. I think I would just burst into tears as I fell to my knees, hoping for her understanding and compassion. I don't think I would have a choice. Siquomb isn't she? Peace, Susan Very happy to be on this road and traveling ... with Joni and all of you! But she may still keep a foot in the water out there. She's still scheduled at the Hollywood Bowl in August to sing with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock and here's something from (her sometime trumpeter) Mark Isham's latest newsletter that sounds intriguing: "I've started writing songs for my next album, which will be my first on Arista Records. For this project I've invited an amazing roster of female singer/songwriters to join me in creating a collection of duets. I'm having a great time crafting a variety of songs for these women's unique voices." Hope springs eternal ;-) Kakki P.S.
