Please feel free to post your comments on the Offbeat Message Board at http://offbeat.com/cgi-bin/message/message.pl As a matter of fact PLEASE (those of you have purchased it and heard it make your comments directly to Mr. Robert Fontenot). We were thinking of chipping in and getting this guy laid so he can lose that ugly attitude (you know a positive repsonse to something negative). I can't believe people can actually give a review like this. You can post a message on their board at http://offbeat.com/cgi-bin/message/message.pl or just email them directly with your comments. I know alot of you probably will have some. Thanks for the support! Love Michael Jack Neilson Here I Go Again (Paz Music Productions) Some artists don't need to include a lyric sheet in their CD. For example, local sessionman and singer- songwriter Jack Neilson, who possesses a fine, strong, expressive voice, expertly recorded by professionals. He also has some rather standard, almost cliched lyrics that, while adequate to the mood, are not exactly crying out to be carved in stone. Neilson, backed by local names including David Torkanowsky, Johnny Vidacovich, and Beth Patterson, unspools a pleasant enough hour of heartbroken middle-of-the-road pop on this, his debut CD. It's so tasteful as to almost be airbrushed, what with Neilson's burnished voice, his gentle acoustic guitar portraits, the expert musical backdrops, and the ever-so-slight touches of jazz and blues that creep quietly into these adult alternative ballads. Not only is his heart in the right place, everything is in the right place, which means that you can almost see the lovers running through the fields, slow-mo style, during the wannabe wedding standard "Shine On Our Love." Even an ostensibly ominous idea like "You Better Be Smilin'" comes off less like a warning to a new lover than it does an attempt to lighten her up a bit. It feels curmudgeonly to sneer at aural wallpaper like this, especially when Neilson's intentions are as warm and fuzzy as the music is polished, but you'll get nothing deep or lasting from Here I Go Again, just a bright sound to take you through the day. And that should count for something. But not much. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Apr 2003 14:34:10 EST From: Harry83house@aol.com Subject: Sarah's BLUE Sarah MacLachlan's version of "Blue" is also on a terrific liitle album called SPIRIT OF '73/ROCK FOR CHOICE. I do not think we disagree here (although I think Joni ought to be flattered to be put in the company of the many composers she has recently been put in the company of via Symphony Space and now tonight). My point is, if you take the following categories (all in the realm of the singer songwriters), who else ranks high in all of them ? Of those, who comes close to ranking as high as Joni overall ? Composer (the melody, chord structure, harmonies, etc.) Lyricist Singer (studio and live) Instrumentalist (studio and live) Producer Contributions to the art of playing of her instrument(s) Oh yeah, a painter, too. Anyone else even close ? Take any of those on your list and do a side by side comparison. Like, at golf they list all of the statistics - Driving, driving accuracy, greens in regulation, putting, sand saves, scoring average, etc. If you are in the top 10 in 4 of them, you're Tiger Woods. As an aside, I noted that of the American Masters in Music, the only other women are all basically singers. Is Joni in their league as a singer ? Perhaps not, but some would argue that she is. So I'm jazzed up with a tape in the machine, ready to go to Joniland for however long this program decides to be!!! I even had friends bring me in copies of the TV Guide saying "I have something for you." They just know I'm Joni possessed, grin, and I am grateful to them for the extra copies!. I really loved the program, loved the way they stayed true to the dates the songs were written rather than the date of the visual appearance. I do get the feeling from watching it that 'she's done,' though, and that makes me very sad. I told my parents this was required viewing, but my mom sent me an email at 9:45, which tells me she couldn't take it...disappointing. NJC The Poetry of D.H. Rumsfeld Recent works by the secretary of defense. By Hart Seely Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld is an accomplished man. Not only is he guiding the war in Iraq, he has been a pilot, a congressman, an ambassador, a businessman, and a civil servant. But few Americans know that he is also a poet. Until now, the secretary's poetry has found only a small and skeptical audience: the Pentagon press corps. Every day, Rumsfeld regales reporters with his jazzy, impromptu riffs. Few of them seem to appreciate it. But we should all be listening. Rumsfeld's poetry is paradoxical: It uses playful language to address the most somber subjects: war, terrorism, mortality. Much of it is about indirection and evasion: He never faces his subjects head on but weaves away, letting inversions and repetitions confuse and beguile. His work, with its dedication to the fractured rhythms of the plainspoken vernacular, is reminiscent of William Carlos Williams'. Some readers may find that Rumsfeld's gift for offhand, quotidian pronouncements is as entrancing as Frank O'Hara's. And so Slate has compiled a collection of Rumsfeld's poems, bringing them to a wider public for the first time. The poems that follow are the exact words of the defense secretary, as taken from the official transcripts on the Defense Department Web site. The Unknown As we know, There are known knowns. Ken ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Apr 2003 23:45:55 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: PBS Special This was a pretty amazing show...for me the second time around but just as powerful & moving. Jerry, you'll be so proud of me - not ONE tear! I watched it with my Dad while I was taping it at his house...this was significant for me as we have shared so much good music together, he showing me an obscure Irving Berlin song or a clever Larry Hart lyric, and me playing Joni for him. Even if we don't share a specific passion, we both know that music, that creative art, is VITAL. Like Chris said so well, this kind of broadcast validates that WE know what so many don't, or won't take the time to get, and it makes me very special to know all of you. And of course I fell in love all over again with this amazing incredible woman. My wife's uncle in Madison WI sent me this e-mail immediately after the show ended. I have to share it: "I just finished watching the PBS American Masters bio on Joni MItchell. It was a very good music bio, which wove her music and her life experiences together very effectively. And for Joni that is of course the only way to understand her music. As much as you appreciate and understand Joni and her music, you can't quite understand what it was like to go through the societal experiences and hear her music contemporaneously. I liked the PBS show a great deal mostly because it helped me recapture the sense of what I was going though as each of her albums came out from 1967 through 1994. Since I am roughly the same age, much of what she struggled with at each stage resonated with me and what I was going through. I also learned a great deal about her jazz experiences, which only made me appreciate her more, as I become increasingly interested in jazz artists from the 50s and 60s, including Mingus, Monk, Davis and such. But most of all, I came away from the TV show feeling that there really are no modern counterparts to the singer-songwriters of that era. There are good solo artists who write good songs with intelligent lyrics; but there is something missing...maybe the paring away of the layers of the onion, as Joni described it. The show and the music created more than a sense of nostalgia for me; they triggered some very real and very immediate feelings that were co-mingled with the remembered feeling triggered by the songs. The result was some perspective on the intervening 35 years and what has happened to me. That is all we can ask of art, I think. I came away feeling that Joni Mitchell rnaks even higher in the pop music pantheon than I had previously thought, and I had thought a great deal of her.
