The San Francisco PBS affiliate, KQED (Ch 9) is quite concise about the length of the program. Here's their blurb: (I didn't know she is a Buddhist, did you?) Joni Mitchell: Woman of Heart and Mind Wed, April 2, 2003 -- 9:00pm Duration: 1:26:46 CC ST The daughter of a grocery store manager and a teacher in Canada, Joni Mitchell is now a US citizen, a Buddhist, a poet and a painter, whose heroes are Miles Davis, Pablo Picasso and Georgia O'Keeffe. Uncompromising and iconoclastic, Mitchell has confounded expectations at every turn - wildly innovative, her music evolved from deeply personal folk into pop, jazz and avant-garde, prophetic of the multi- cultural experimentation of the `80s and `90s. Fiercely independent, she resisted the whims of mainstream audiences and the male-dominated recording industry. Mitchell's records may never have sold as widely as some of her contemporaries, but no one experimented so recklessly or so bravely explored territory outside of accepted pop music. They also have a link for further information with a page of text. They incorrectly site her first album as "Joni Mitchell" released in 1967 [it was '68]: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/database/mitchell_j.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Apr 2003 16:08:28 EST From: Warrenkeith91354@aol.com Subject: UNCTV... we want joni...let them know !!! NJC? I think not! I was sitting around today, as usual, waiting for the phone to ring -- and it did! I picked up the receiver and heard a very familiar voice say, "Is this Bob? This is Joni Mitchell calling." Well, I practically fell down under the weight of the full range of emotions any one of us would feel getting a phone call from Herself. Somehow I managed to mumble that I was indeed myself and she had the right number. "I just wanted to tell you that I am a great admirer of your work," she said. Now, when I started the Joni in Fiction project with Les and Lori, I always dreamed that something like this would happen, but really . . . Joni saying that *she's* a great admirer of *my* work? Too much! So I blurted out something about how much I love her and her work and how honored I was to hear from her. So I asked her what she liked best about Joni in Fiction. "Joni in Fiction," she said. "What the hell is that? Is this Bob Muller, the Covers King?" Although I was shocked and saddened ay this case of mistaken Bob M-identity, I was able to tell Joni that Bob Muller had died alone and broke quite some time ago, but that I was hale and hearty and happy to talk to her. "See ya later," she croaked. They played for 3 solid hours with 3 sidemen- longtime associate Mike Finnegan on keys, veteran Joe Vitale on drums, and a new bass player whose name I didn't catch. They did several new songs, notable were Stills' "Feed The People" and Nash's "Send Your Angels", inspired by 9-11. Nash also revealed that "Lost Another One" from 2002's "Songs For Survivors" was about George Harrison's passing. Before launching into a lovely rendition of "Our House," he said "This is for Joni". "Almost Cut My Hair" was a show stopper, and Stills on piano did a Booker T song (name?) that got one of many standing ovations. Some seldom performed songs like "Military Madness" and "In These Dreams" kept it from being a greatest hits show. They ended up with a powerful "Woodstock" and a final encore of "Wooden Ships". While the ticket price was more than I have ever paid (partly because Konocti is a very small venue), 30 seconds into the opening song, "Carry On", I was going, yeah, it's worth it. The night was all the sweeter because I got to meet two charming ladies from the jmdl; Kakki and Darice. If you get a chance, Randy says go for it. I love Neil Young, but did not miss him. Yes, it's no April Fool...I'm REALLY up to Volume #39 of the longest running Tribute CD series on the planet, and this one is the usual collection of bouquets and bumbles, confections & cheeses. Thanks to those who contributed to this volume, and that would be: Ranger Rick Some very nice guy who sent me an mp3 anonymously And here's what's on it: Beth Anne Cole - Barangrill: A very hard-to-find recording, from a Canadian jazz singer. Love the song, love the cover! An especially tasty bit of flute that highlights the lyrics in a fun fashion. Helena - Both Sides Now: Swedish Pop singer from the 60's, looks better than she sounds. Sauce - Tin Angel Sauce - Urge For Going Sauce - Cactus Tree: Sauce is Michael Willson and Beth Rudd, who recorded these tracks on SACD with a single engineer in an old stone church. It gives the songs a lot of reverb and a haunting echo. Very stark - I love 'em but I think I'm probably the only one. Fullerton College Vocal Jazz Ensemble - Both Sides Now: Another so-so entry in the BSN category. YMCA Camp Takodah - The Circle Game: Ya gotta love this one, because it will make you wonder what they were thinking! A bunch of camp kids from Keene, NH singing songs in unison (no harmonies, no accompaniment). I guess it's appropriate that they included this 'campfire' classic, but it'll make Joni change her mind about "The more out of tune voices, the better"... Tony Spinelli - Carey: Speaking of what were they thinking, Tony decides to sing the first couple of lines pretty straight on, then takes off with his own lyrics like he was working from memory. I like his guitar, and this one makes me laugh. Panic Painters - People's Parties:Another VERY rare track from a pop/jazz band from Holland. Sounds a little like Styx. Larry Santos - Both Sides Now: Sounds like Mac Davis, and was going for the look as well, with the leather buckskin vest, pseudo whit-boy afro, and macrame belt. White On Black - Carey: White On Black: Big Yellow Taxi: More rarities, from a 60's/70's UK folk trio. Smyle - Woodstock: Canada's answer to Grand Funk Railroad (admit it, you like Grand Funk), this version has that great classic-rock jam feel to it. Again, a pretty rare cut. J.J. Worthington: Both Sides Now: According to the record jacket, this guy was supposed to be the next big thing. He's OK, but he looks really creepy, gave me the heebie jeebies. Carl Filipaik - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: Oooooh, you can't help but like this one, a slow-burning sultry saxophone, puts you in the mood, if you know what I mean, bay-bee... The G-Stringers - The Circle Game The G-Stringers - I Had A King: Very early college acapella recording, maybe the first college acapella group to tackle Joni. And I guess it's not TRUE acapella, they have some sparse guitar on here, but it's very nice, wonderful harmonies. Blossom Dearie - Both Sides Now: A pretty nice take on BSN from icon Blossom Dearie, who has this little pixie-ish voice which is very clear & precise. She messes up some of the words, though. Suzanne Stevens - All I Want: From 1977, and sounds like it. Very pleasant, with nice harmonies. Rob McConnell & The Boss Brass - Chelsea Morning: Very nice arrangement from Canadian trombonist & bandleader Rob, who's been steady on the Toronto Jazz circuit forever and a day. Bryan Ferry - You're So Square (Baby I Don't Care): From an early (1973) record from the Roxy Music vocalist - pretty straight up, and over with before you know it. Danny Diaz Trio - Both Sides Now: These guys were like from Hawaii or something. They all looked the same and they all played guitar. They look pretty tough on their LP cover, but they sound pretty wimpy. There it is, in all its glory...22 tracks, 74+ minutes of Joni covers heaven!
