I have just got to the end of a novel I am reading and i read this last night: 'i don't think anyone is evil beyond saving. maybe i'm like my dad that way: naive. But better naive, I think , than calloused to the core.' The book is called Boy's Life by Robert McCammon. It is an unusual book. Normally when i read a novel, it is the storyitself that grabs me and I take little notice of the way it is written as I find that often detracts formt he story, getting wrapped up in the 'letrary merit' of it. Anyway, I happen to really like the way this man writes and it adds to the wholeexperience. It is set in Alabama, early sixties and chronicles the experiences of good and evil of young boy. I really enjoyed it. bw colin ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Mar 2003 01:10:35 -0800 From: "kakki" Subject: Re: talk to me / jerks /njc Randy wrote: > My sense is that she thinks it is more than that-like a blockage > on his part that makes him withhold. > Is your silence that golden? > Are you comfortable in it? > Is it the key to your freedom > Or is it the bars on your prison? > Are you gagged by your ribbons? > Are you really exclusive or just miserly? > Then she admonishes > You spend every sentence as if it was marked currency! Good point. In the lyrics she does go from being lighthearted and self deprecating about herself to challenging and going a bit on the attack with him here. It reminds me of a Peanuts cartoon where Lucy's mouth opens extra wide to scream at poor little quiet Linus to get his attention. > It seems like she is trying to break through his wall. > Then again, he could be like the guy in the bar in "Raised > On Robbery" who just wants to be left alone and watch > the game! As Paz has mentioned, he talked to Joni about the song and the tequila anaconda. Paz thought the restaurant was Dan Tana's which is a kind of old New York Italian, celeb and musician haunt next to the Troubadour. Ever since I heard that I've pictured her sitting there at the smoky bar incessantly chatting up the non-responsive guy. I had this thought that maybe he just had indigestion from the huge platters of pasta and tumblers of drinks they serve there and was simply in the semi-coma carb and Chianti zone ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Mar 2003 09:53:55 +0000 From: "Tamsin Lucas" Subject: Gillian Welch njc I bought a Gillian Welch CD yesterday, Time (the Revelator), and I think it's wonderful. About a month ago, Lama re-listed his list of essential Joni works; amongst being: "bShadows and Light', (1980) in its unedited edition (including the skating video) available on region-free DVD from a guy in Hong Kong who lists auctions on (ebay)." Volume 2003, Number 102. I bought this as my first DVD, receiving it 2 weeks later, registered mail, from Singapore. I've never seen Joni live in concert. It's a masterpiece. I'm floored. In awe. Joni is a goddess. Thanks, Jim. The first Joni piece I remember is Both Sides Now by Judy Collins. I first really listened to Joni in the summer of 1970. Ladies of the Canyon. I remember listening to her at the anti-war collective where I later lived. It was at the end of high school. Joni became a guiding light for me. Back when I was a cab driver. My best friend and I used to sit in his apartment, drink somewhat wine and listen to Joni. Up to, and including, Court & Spark. But somehow, I because separated from Joni's music for a long time. Fast forward to Ogallala, Nebraska. In a heavy snowstorm, we're driving to Wisconsin for thanksgiving. We stop at the truck stop, and I'm thinking we need some good road tunes. Find Dog Eat Dog in a cassette. Fall in love with Joni all over again. And I still love Dog Eat Dog. Then I find ebay, and buy a bunch of used Joni CD's from one of the list members. You know who you are, Janine. She turns me on to the list, where I mostly lurk & listen. I have all her CD's except Hits and the Big Yellow Taxi single. Joni is 95% of the music I listen to right now. I guess you'd say I'm somewhat obsessed. I travel with a CD case consisting of 18 or 20 Cd's, I listen to her at work, in the car . . . I take shelter in Joni. I had a head injury from a high-speed auto accident 15 years ago, and have suffered major depression and memory-related problems. I find shelter in Joni's music, I use her to tune out problems. She's my travelling companion. Watching Shadows & Light has really been amazing to me. I love her even more. Tunes or words? I get into both. I understand why people don't like Dog Eat Dog. They are forgiven. No offense, Bob. This morning, someone instant messaged me on AOL, and asked what I was doing. I told him listening to Joni Mitchell and his reply was "who's that?" This always floors me. I don't understand why everyone in western civilization doesn't know her. I told him that she is a "singer-songwriter goddess." Then I sent him a link. My most-listened to CD's: Chalk Mark, Night Ride Home, Taming the Tiger, Misses, Wild Things Run Fast, Shadows & Light, Turbulent Indigo, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter. To a lesser degree: Hejira, Mingus, Both Sides Now, Travelog. They all get played, though. The only song I don't like is from her first album. It grates on my nerves. No need to mention the name, many people love it. A major goal in my life is to see Joni in concert. A note about over-use of acronyms. I subscribe to the full digest. I see abbreviations in folk's messages, I sometimes have no idea what they're talking about. My mind goes blank. Especially with the lesser-used acronyms. It's frustrating. Sometimes I have to stop my reading process and try to remember - sometimes I can't, and I just forget the post and go on to the next. I get over it, just something to consider. I'm grateful that the list has become less political. Just in sheer volume, I could hardly keep up. And it was divisive. I started frowning at people's screen names just by seeing them, because I knew what was coming. And they're folks I had respected, and still do. (I still look forward to reading an intelligent political post on occasion.) Thank Joni. God Bless good people everywhere; may the war be short. Why not just make a running list of the acronyms and keep it beside your computer and use it as a reference? I can relate to what you're saying, when I signed up for a Springsteen digest I read through post after post with Springsteen songs and records all in acronyms & I was totally lost. I eventually caught up, like I did here, but with your handicap it's a different issue. I'll be glad to put together a list for you if you like. And if you listen to 95% Joni (and God bless ya for doing so), you DEFINITELY need to go 'on beyond Z' and pick up some of the many concerts, unplugged appearances, demos, rarities, etc. Bob NP: Joni, "Both Sides Now" Second Fret 3/17/67 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Mar 2003 11:38:59 EST From: FMYFL@aol.com Subject: Re: CPR concert njc In a message dated 3/17/2003 2:52:30 PM Eastern Standard Time, jrgoodspeed@yahoo.com writes: > I just had to write some people who would actually care and say WOW, I saw > CPR in Northampton, MA last night and it was so freakin' good! I was very pleasantly surprised with it. Although the setting is current times, it very definitely evokes the feeling of the "Ladies of the Canyon" era of the late 1960's, early 1970's, as the Director/Writer said were her intentions. IMHO, the settings were absolutely perfect in their details, (i.e. shabby-chic houses perched on hillsides with killer views and secluded swimming pools, overgrown "wild" gardens and landscapes, recording studios in the back yard, WILD parties at poolside, AND in spite of everything, the garages all had Porsches and Mercedes in them...this IS L.A. after all)! AND a Joni Sighting (has this already been added to the site?) as Kate Beckinsale peruses the photos on Jane's, (Frances McDormond) "wall of fame", and sees her posed with JM herself! Excerpt: As an out reporter who favorably reviewed The Ethel Merman Disco Album for Billboard in 1979, I don't think you should be so quick to dismiss Merman's effort. At the time, she was the biggest (in many ways) Broadway star to do disco. Disco was a fun era and must have had something going for it, since many young gays and straights are enjoying its current revival at some clubs and on major FM radio outlets. What a nice post that was! Once more, for the record, (ftr? not to be confused with the other FTR that is either Joni's "For the roses" or that floral delivery service), I hate acronyms too (as so many people here have heard before ha ha) and it has nothing to do with head injuries or memory problems. It's just too much information for my burnt-out brain. I work in a place where there are acronyms coming out the ying-yang and my brain just refuses to deal with anymore, or maybe it's just obstinacy. It took me years before I memorized my SIN (social insurance number, which is Canadian for social security or whatever you call it there - I kind of like SIN though, heh-heh). Some of them (acronyms) I've come to recognize from seeing them so many times - in the case of DJRD, I prefer the acronym to the full name because I can never remember whether it's Don Juan's Restless, or Wreckless, or Reckless, Daughter. Every time I see ACOY I think of the fish in my sister's backyard. STAS sounds like a medical term (STAT from the Latin statim meaning "right away") or like the Latin word that means "you stand". And so on. ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Mar 2003 20:34:42 -0500 (EST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: A dog's perspective: Pet Peeves from the dog's perspective njc 1. I was semi-impressed that it found any of them. It didn't find either of the two Joni song acronyms I tried (what kind of a crap website IS that anyway?) Nor did it find SIQUOMB. Most of the time, I don't care enough to bother looking things up and I just make up my own definitions. Usually I like mine better. (Not that I'm an egomaniac or anything - sheesh! da noiva some people!) I prefer to think of Siquomb as being some Haida god or something. I was disappointed when I found out it was a freakin' acronym! I'm glad Joni moved past that. ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Mar 2003 23:26:33 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni mention in song: In a message dated 3/18/2003 7:26:33 PM Eastern Standard Time, FMYFL@aol.com writes: > I'd post the exact website addy, but my computer is getting some > botox injections. More info: http://www.jmdl.com/articles/view.cfm?id=609 1968: Joni met Jimi Hendrix in Ottawa, Canada. Hendrix drummer Mitch Mitchell wrote "We heard of this great singer in town, called Joni Mitchell ... so we went to this little folk club (Le Hibou) after our gig (at the Capitol Theatre) with Hendrix's tape machine. We were amazed. She was wonderful." Jimi wrote in his diary "Went down to the little club to see Joni - fantastic girl with heaven words - we all go to party - OK - millions of girls. Listen to tapes and smoked back at hotel." In 1994 Joni told Rolling Stone: "I met Jimi Hendrix at the Capitol Theatre in Ottawa, and after his set, he came down, and he brought a big reel-to reel tape recorder. He introduced himself very shyly and said, "Would you mind if I taped your show?" I said, not at all. And later that evening, we went back, we were staying at the same hotel. He and his drummer Mitch, the three of us were talking. It was so innocent. But the management, all they saw was three hippies. We were outcasts anyway! . A black hippie! Two men and a woman in the same room. So they kept telling us to play lower. It was a very creative, special night. We were playing like children."
