It may not be my favourite cover, or even my favourite Joni song, but the more people exposed to Joni the better - maybe it might even prompt a few people to even find out more about her? Therefore if you go to "Both sides Now"...song not album...... and apply that you end up with "Feathered chickens everywhere I have looked at chickens that way" She goes on to lament that she really does "not know chickens at all" NOw to apply the whole alphabet L was liver.... so it ends up with her sadly saying that she does not "know liver at all"... but is the original word "life" a noun? HMMMM I could tell her that liver was punishment food.... nice alegorical effect I think.... Life = liver = punishment!!!!! Welcome Andy! Like Chris said, the '74 appearance on the BBC was broadcast and is available. I don't have the full gig, but I do have what was shown on "The Old Grey Whistle Test", it's a pretty good portion. I just watched it a couple weeks ago and I enjoyed it a lot. I had forgotten how much talent Tom Scott brought to that tour, and he shares a lot of the spotlight with Joni in these clips. Nice rocking take on "Raised On Robbery". I tend to neglect Scott when I think about Joni's reed guys in favor of Shorter (who of course has had a much longer career with her) and Michael Brecker (whose work on the '79 S&L tour I'm just ga-ga about). Anyway, Scott rocks, and he even gets an additional gold star in MY book as he recorded a Joni cover (Woodstock on his LP Great Scott). This particular video compilation, also features her 1970 appearance, "Joni Mitchell sings Joni Mitchell" (informally referred to as the 'Pink Dress Concert') & another 'Old Grey Whistle Test' broadcast with lots of Dog Eat Dog (DED) references and lots of discussion about her paintings. So how am I doing in the "insight" department? :~) I'm happy to share and will gladly make a copy for you if you're interested. I believe most of it was from the LA shows, the rest from Berkeley. It was at the Berkeley Community Theater, not the Greek. March 11, 1972. I was there and it was killer, beginning with a short set by the LA Express sans Joni, then she came out to join them with "This Flight Tonight". She later played solo on piano, dulcimer, probably acoustic guitar. The audience was full of Joni lookalikes, the front of the stage was heaped with flower bouquets, home baked bread, etc. I've seen many, many amazing concerts, but this one still stands out in my mind. Hello to all JMDListers - since not all of you are on the NEJonifest list, I thought I would forward this post to you so that you may know what we are up to over on the mini-list. We yearn for your participation in any way you can. Be well. Hello all your wonderful Jonifest travelers, travelers, travelers. As you imagine yourself at Full Moon in the bucolic woods of the New York Catskills I want you to further imagine going into the barn and looking longingly at the wonderful items generously donated by your fellow JMDLers to benefit JoniMitchell.com. Now visualize yourself buying raffle tickets from Maggie, Alex and the other raffle helpers, hoping against hope that your name will be called when the time comes for the drawing. You're smart, so you keep buying those tickets to up your chances of winning that special something. All the while you feel good, because you know the money goes to support your community. Got it? To make this vision a reality we need items to offer! All items are welcome that relate in some way to Joni, her music, her values, her art and her passions, with the higher-end items reserved for the fundraiser and other items available for our every-popular give-away. The more special the item, the more special the incentive will be for Jonifesters to dig down deep and buy those tickets (while losing good sleep). Last year we had some really incredible things, thanks to you all and the efforts of Ms. Sharon Buffington. Now, I know that I have some mighty big shoes to fill (so to speak), so please, help me to carry on Sharon's legacy of fundraising success and get thinking about what you might be able to send along for this very-important component of the Jonifest weekend. If you are not able to attend (that's at least one big boo hoo) you can still support your community and participate from afar by finding/making/buying items for to the raffle. Everyone's invited to contribute! In our on-going commitment to making each year better than the last (NEJonifest # 6 coming up - woo-hoo!!), building on the successes and tweaking to improve, we are currently planning on holding the drawing on Saturday afternoon. All items will be on display in the barn, and then we'll gather in the afternoon for the fun. Late enough in the day to allow you all-nighters some shut-eye time, but not so late as to interfere with dinner or music-making. If you would e-mail me off list with your ideas I would greatly appreciate it. And finally all of the donations should be sent to Ashara since her house is bigger than mine and we just know that you guys will be so generous that we'll need a really big space for all the wonderful items that are sure to come pouring in. The band, which is scheduled to perform in Shanghai April 1 and in Beijing April 4, will not be allowed to play "Brown Sugar," "Honky Tonk Woman," "Beast of Burden," or "Let's Spend the Night Together," said Chen Jixin head of Beijing Time New Century Entertainment, a concert organizer behind the two China dates. The four songs, all of which include sexual references, were originally cut from the mainland release of the band's "40 Licks" compilation album by China's culture ministry, Chen said. I caught it at the cinema today, and thought it was a very strong all-round effort (although I wouldn't go as far as to say it was brilliant), with Jennifer Aniston finally shrugging off Rachel, to move to second place in the Friends On The Big Screen chart - behind Lisa Kudrow, obviously, whose performance in The Opposite Of Sex sets the bar very high. Anyway, the whole cast of The Good Girl did good work here - I especially enjoyed Zoey Deschannel as the attitudinous Cheryl. She provided my favourite line, the slightly indistinct "Fuck you very much" to a customer, repeated as "Thank you very much" - great stuff! Still in films, I saw Rabbit Proof Fence yesterday - WOW! What an amazing film, and what an amazing story. I was stunned at the end, dewy eyed and so ANGRY at what the Whites did to the aborigines in Australia. See this in a cinema if you can, folks... Oh, and on the Shoot Out The Lights album he plays... bass! Quite talented then. RT was on magisterial form, playing most of the new album, which sounds better with every play (and he's singing better than ever, *sigh*) and dipping into his inexhaustible back catalogue for a few rarely played gems (Missy How You Let Me Down, A Man In Need) and "greatest hits": Shoot Out The Lights, whose riff must be one of the most resoundingly terrifying ever committed to vinyl, and which tonight featured a truly demented mandolin solo from Mr Zorn; Al Bowlly's In Heaven, on which RT's solo on acoustic was worth the price of admission on its own; and there were more recent classics-in-the making like Razor Dance and Crawl Back Under My Stone. There's a Retail Rodeo special on aisle 3. Liquid Drain Cleaner, 2 12-ounce cans for $5.00. Liquid Drain Cleaner has churning power and it will churn right through your pipes. Ladies, you need female plumbing. Shove something clean and new up your filthy pipes. That's Liquid Drain Cleaner on aisle 3. Have a good day and thank you for shopping at Retail Rodeo. This is a hand lotion, so don't put it on any other part of your body, even if that part needs lubrication. We try to keep frivolous lawsuits to a minimum, unless, of course, the customer is at fault. Cheryl: Happy Halloween, Retail Rodeo shoppers. There's a Retail Rodeo special on all bulk candy on aisle 4. Ghouls and goblins, witches and warlocks, wandering these aisles day after day, I put a Halloween curse on your hellish heads. However, the line that really hooked in the movie was from Justine (Jennifer Aniston) when she said: "Is this your last best chance? Or are you going to your grave with unlived lives in your veins?" If you mean Roman Catholics, they are explicitly contravening certain official teachings of their church in voting Democratic, at least in many instances. I imagine that the same could be said, to a lesser extent, of Orthodox Jews. They're going against the grain. That's not my definition of a "fundamentalist." I believe that when most people speak of "fundamentalist Christians," they do indeed mean evangelical Protestants. If you'd like to broaden the definition of "fundamentalist" to include members of any religion who hew to either a literal interpretation of a text or certain very basic (or "fundamental") teachings, fine. My guess, however, is that that's not what most people think of when they use that term in the United States.
