Still caught in the updraft and not intending to land for a while.... Thanks for the birthday wishes and for those of you who have admitted (off list and on) that you find Hejira complicated at first. WEll I am giving it a rest for now... sticking with the T'Log ones I like from that album, and re-visiting Furry on BSN to see if it becomes tolerable..... we shall see. I actually was given a CD version of FTR yesterday and Oh wow what a lovely album that is. My vinyl one became a statistic of the end of a relationship many years ago and I had not replaced it on CD... OH what a wonderful to have that again and Joni's voice is soaring about the room as I type this. Do any of you have Joni Albums that you had "lost" in one circumstance or another and then they came back to you .........and you find that they are listened to this time around, with a totally different perspective....but are just blindingly brilliant and new? I seem to have the same feelings about C&S and Blue, and Clouds when I came back to them on CD a few years back. A lot of the other albums, like Hejira were new to me as I had such a gap in my listening to Joni with any regularity.... getting it all together with a huge back catalogue in 2000. Maybe that is why I like T'log... and BSN (most of it) Anyway, on with the day Lucy who is eyeing the world from the giddy heights of being 46!!! thanks again for the wishes, you are all so kind... I had the same thought, Dave...looking at my fave Hejira, the majority of the songs have a direct reference to some spiritual or religious item: Coyote: And their pills and powders to get them thru this passion play Amelia: It was the hexagram of the heavens Hejira: In the church they light the candles Song For Sharon: I'm headed to the church to play Bingo Refuge Of The Roads: Muscular with gods and sungold I can't really see anything in the others to make an argument for their inclusion; still, as you say she is deeply concerned with spiritual imagery/ideas in her writing, and I would dare say that well over 50% or her work reflects that in some form. We are about halfway through the mixing process and I am honestly blown away by how wonderful everything is sounding! The musicians who have lent their talents to this project are truly the finest I have ever heard. Just yesterday Jen Hammell(formerly of Texas Celtic band Clandestine) came and put down some gorgeous, incredibly breathtaking harmony on "Boomerang Love" and "Carolina." I know I've said this before but she has one of the prettiest voices I have ever heard. If you're not familiar with her definately look her up online...I know she has one solo album and Clandestine, who were together for seven years, has several recordings). Joe Ebel, a masterful violinist plays on a few tracks, the song "Parsonage Lane" features cellist Ron Clearfield from the ASO, and Stuart Rhineheart, a cross between Ian Anderson and Wayne Shorter contributes some wonderful flute and soprano sax. The cover of "Parsonage Lane" will feature a special tribute to the JMDL...that's all I can say about it for now but look forward to a pleasant surprise...and there will be information forthcoming soon about preorders. I was just thinking about sending an update to the list when Victor's message came in about Parsonage Lane. Well done Victor. Over this side of the pond, things have reached a significant stage with the Stryngs album. Namely, that it's finished! The mastering was completed this morning, along with final tweaks to the CD artwork. It's all been sent off for manufacture as of this afternoon. The CD will come with a 16 page booklet almost entirely given over to the lyrics, with only a few pages lost to credits and photos and the like. Reading the mock up of the booklet last night, I was finally struck by just how talented Strings, our singer and lyricist, really is. The poetry prizes weren't for nothing, after all. We can't wait to share it with you. We're bursting with pride over this project, and we think you're going to like it too. At least we hope so :) We're two to three weeks away from having shippable product, and hopefully by that point we'll have online ordering and some up-to-date sound samples up on the web site. Obviously we'll keep you posted about progress with this. It just remains to thank everyone who's given us their kind praise so far - it has been much appreciated, especially during the long long studio sessions, where it was a reminder that what we're doing has some legs on it! You may have this covered already, but do you know about the 1967 documentary film "Revolution" - and the follow-up 20 years later called "Hippie Revolution"? A while back (July 2000) I spent some time driving around Northern California with two women I had befriended on the Internet - singer Kathleen Tarp, who had been a member of the Serendipity Singers, and her friend, Louise - (along the way we visited the Monterey Blues Festival and the Kate Wolf Festival in Sebastopol). In the sixties Louise was known as 'Today Malone' in Haight Ashbury and had starred in the original 1967 'Revolution' film - touring Europe in 1968 promoting it at 3 European film festivals. Today Louise is saving lives and stamping out disease as a hospital administrator. Kathleen and Louise remain two of my best-loved people on the planet, so I'll write to them and see if they can help at all with your program. In the meantime, I love this picture of 'Today' (on Haight Street, I imagine) hawking the alternative newspaper 'Berkeley Barb Wire' back then - see http://www.metroactive.com/papers/metro/07.18.96/hippie-9629.html and also found this doing a web search: >"The original 1967 documentary 'Revolution' starred > Today Malone, Herb Caen, Ronnie Davis, Louis Gottlieb, > Jurt Hirschhorn.... Yes it would appear at first sight that it's a cheesy pop rock thing. However I always felt that the lyrics were so intense that the music's main purpose was to make it easy to swallow the pill. We are staying at Chez Julius who has been a wondeful host. We have had a great time sking and snowboarding (which I even tried too). I am way behind on the list topics but pray everyone is well and happy birthday to every one I have missed since Mardi Gras started. We are headed to Reno tonight and then back home on sunday. I don't know if Jack has told everyone yet, but I don't want you to miss this. He received a personal letter from the owner of CD Baby and he loves his album so much that he is going to feature it on the front page from March 12 for about a week. Please stop by and show your support and pick up a copy if you haven't already. Alison has been playing the stuff on her show as well as some other jocks at her station in Utah. I am going to try and get Jack to post the letter this guy sent to him cause it was so amazing. Has anyone else (who is on CD Baby) ever got a letter like this?? Talk to you guys soon. He was followed by a couple of musicians then a fellow by the name of Derral Gleason took to the state for "The Hole". He did a great job and was given quite the applause for the evening. Ballad Of Penny Evans Written by Steve Goodman My name is Penny Evans and I've just turned twenty-one A young widow in the war that's been fought in Vietnam And I have two infant daughters and I do the best I can And now they say the war is over but I think it just began I remember I was seventeen when I first met young Will On his fathers grand piano we played good old "Hearts And Soul" And I only knew the left-hand part, he knew the right so well He is the only boy I slept with and the only one I will You know, first we had a baby girl and it was two good years But then came the one-A notice and we parted without tears And now it's nine months from the last goodbye and a second babe appears And now it's ten months and a telegram confirming all our fears You know, my name is Penny Evans and I've just turned twenty-one A young widow in the war that's been fought in Vietnam And I have two infant daughters and I do the best I can But you know, they say the war is over and I think it just began And now it's every month I get a check from some Army bureaucrat And it's every month I tear it up and mail the damn thing back Did you think that would make it alright, did you think I would fall for that? Oh you can keep your bloody money it won't bring my Billy back And I don't care much for politics or speechs I don't understand But you know, I never took a cent from any living man And still tonight there are fifty thousand gone in that unhappy land Yes and fifty thousand hearts and souls being played by just one hand My name is Penny Evans and I've just turned twenty-one A young widow in the war that's been fought in Vietnam I have two infant daughters I thank God I have no sons For they say the war is over but I think it's just began ron ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Mar 2003 20:09:38 -0000 From: "o" Subject: Re:Alliterate Joni Also 'Tax Free' The most alliterative song Joni ever wrote must be 'Borderline' - great lyrics, but she goes a bit far with "You snipe so steady/You snub so snide/ So ripe and ready/To diminish and deride" in my opinion. As regards 'Tax Free', it wasn't about the danger of Pat Robertson being elected, rather about the tax breaks that many preachers received from the U.S government in return for persuading their congregation that the U.S should invade Cuba. Further to that, here's what Joni had to say in her 1985 "Rock Master Class" BBC interview with Tony Hale: JM: I never thought I would become a political animal -- God, I hope not -- it's like an intellectual or political animal, I always hoped not (laughs). But censorship was rearing its ugly head. There were insinuations -- okay, church and state were holding hands -- are holding hands. You'd see Reagan on the 700 Club which is a powerful evangelist broadcast, and they would be insinuating that any criticism that was raised against the president was communist propaganda with a feeling that there were certain dangerous right-wing tendencies happening in the country and that there was a massive vote to support them. It seemed like an important time to make certain statements. You know, "use it or lose it" comes to mind. You can of course read the whole thing at: http://www.jmdl.com/articles/view.cfm?id=646 (Thanks to Lindsay Moon for the transcription) And if you want to go one better and listen to it, it's available on CD and really is recommended listening...besides a wonderfully enjoyable & informative conversation, Joni plays a number of DED songs acoustically on piano & guitar, and even does a paprika plains-like piano improv piece that I just adore.
