I also spent a small fortune (at least it was then.... six pounds!!!!! on some turquoise and indian silver bracelets and twenty one pounds on an "afghan" coat)... and lets not forget the bags of suede bits to make patchwork jackets and some wonderful fringey belts!!!!! Oh and a hell of a suede head band (with embroidery and tiny indian bells on it) that on a hot day left me with a vaguely green-ish brow and a nasty rash from the chemicals in the dye.... I still have my coat(it was a good one and has no smell or maggots in it) and my children tried it on the other day, as did I.... I could barely get my arms down the sleeves!!! My son (who is skinny as a stick, could not get it to fit round him either) and I rather belatedly, and with some dawning sense of latent self realisation, came to a happy conclusion that I had not been the HUGE THING I thought I had been...... Now isn't THAT sad...... I did eventually manage to sing a very passable version of Both Sides NOw and Urge or Going but without the blonde hair and cheekbones I was not convinced.... but I was happy to have got there.... My attempts at Joan Baez were less successful, her vibrato and effortless soaring were beyond me so I stuck to Sandy Denny which for my English Tones worked much better!!!! Still try the Joni from time to time and its OK, but its in her "mature register".. the bell like quality has long since gone from my voice.... and whilst I am not an industrial smoker.... that has not helped.......... Who else is/was a Joni wannabe?" Hi Anne, great question! I actually wanted to be Joni before I ever discovered who she was. As a young teenager, I stole my brother's acoustic guitar and taught myself how to play from songbooks. I've always rebelled against the herd mentality like Joni did. I even have long blonde hair (hi-lited now with shades of gray). At the age of 18, because of an unplanned pregnancy, I also walked down the aisle saying to myself "I can get outta this." Being a singer-songer writer to me was the absolute highest personal achievement one could ever reach. I did not discover who Joni was until I was 24, and when I did I was completely blown away!! She had the life (and talent) I've always wanted (a bit of jealousy perhaps?) and never will. I'm also about the same age as Joni's daughter, and when I found out she had made contact with her little green I thought: Maybe it is a mistake, perhaps my own parents adopted me, and I am really Joni's daughter. How absolutely twisted is that? I once saw a similar scenario in one of Gary Larson's Far Side Cartoons. It really made me laugh! Some updates for you: RAFFLE: Unfortunately, our Mistress of Raffles for the past 2 years, Sharon Buffington, is not able to attend this year. However, that incredible sidekick of mine, Maggie and her wonderful husband, Alex have stepped up to the plate to organize this year's raffle. We've already received some wonderful goodies for this. Be looking in your mailbox for lots more info from them! ACCOMMODATIONS: Rooms are starting to fill up, so if you'd like a bed this year, I'd advise you to get your deposit in right away to secure one. The beds are on a first-come-first served basis. Once they are gone, they are gone. Don't be left out!!!!! Please remember to fill out an online form (one for each person going) as I cannot record the deposit without it. Even if you signed up last year, you need to reregister for this. FORMS: Please remember to send in your signed and dated hard-copy release form. I need a separate form for each person attending. SCHOLARSHIPS: Please remember to apply early if you are in need of a scholarship this year. At the moment, the scholarship fund is very low, so there are no guarantees for how much assistance will be available. If you are able to donate to this fund to help your fellow listers get to Jonifest, whether you are actually attending or not, it is much needed this year. Any donation, no matter how large or small, is greatly appreciated. DONATIONS FOR JONIMITCHELL.COM: As usual, there is an "admission fee" which consists of a donation towards helping sustain JoniMitchell.com and JMDL.com. Each year, the donations are alternated between the two websites. This year, your donation benefits the JoniMitchell.com website. Please be as generous as you can. Even if you are not attending Jonifest, you can make a donation by sending a check payable to: Jim Johanson and sent to me at: Ashara Productions, LLC 40 Parsonage Lane Topsfield, MA 01983 All donations over $20.00 will receive a special thank you gift. That's it for now. Be looking in your mailboxes for more information in the future, including the Jonifest 2003 Logo contest!! You could do worse than sound like Sandy Denny. I much prefer her voice over Joan Baez's (I hate vibrato). In fact, if I dare be so blasphemous, I prefer Sandy Denny's voice to Joni's (not that I'm complaining about Joni's.) My Joni wannabe-ness was growing my hair long and bleaching it to make it blonde. I don't get how a person who started life as a strawberry blonde could have ended up mousey brown, but such is my life. I'm not sure what my original colour is anymore (apart from grey, that is) as I haven't given Mother Nature a chance to show me yet. That takes more courage than I have. The other thing was playing the guitar - when the music book for "For the roses" came out and they used the open tunings for some of the songs for the first time in one of those, that was a major revelation for me - I could have been in heaven. ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Mar 2003 11:40:50 -0600 From: "J.David Sapp" Subject: Streisand covers Joni on frisbee #38 Hey Bob - I'm not a Babs fan but her cover of I Don't Know Where I Stand (live) = Vol. 38 is a knockout. My Mediterranean look pretty much eliminated that possibility. But I still fancied myself quite the little hippie, I did have Abbie Hoffman hair. Although I am queer, I was not ever really that attracted to Joni's looks. Curly dark hair the complete opposite shape, 5'6 and round. But I could sing a little. So being a high school sophmore (72/73), and acting like one, I used to sing in the cafeteria, doing all my imitations, Johnny Mathis and Joni in particular,Ethel came much later. I would walk down the halls and girls would yell out requests to sing especially, "You Turn Me On..." Being a Leo I always complied. Deep voice and all, I could hit every note that Joni dished out back then. Whether or not I sounded like her is only an urban myth now, but I thought I did somewhat. I took up guitar for a very short time and sucked. So I tried to write at least lyrics that were as profound and as multi-layered as Joni's. I sucked at that too. I also dreamt of being her "Little Green" - although I am at least 10 years older than Kilauren. Couldn't it be somehow that I was her daughter?! Well of course not. Later and thankfully, Phoebe Snow came aong and I fit much more into her look and sound. And now neither Joni nor I can hit those notes anymore. So finally we have something in common! But what I wouldn't have given to live her life, so free so creative soooo cool! I think we all live vicariously through the life and times of Joni. She gives us that portal to dream through and to know we are not so strange, for being so different and thinking outside that box. And here we have found all our fellow Joni geeks and I, for one, am finally at peace with not being her. I am truly anjoying life as one of her greatest fans and damn proud to be one, DED and all! The conference was called "We're Gonna Make Van Goughs!" and was in reference to "raising up" Canadian artists who would eventually become world-famous. They then proceeded to honour a Czechoslovakian artist for his work... Joni (the famous artist who was supposed to be idolized) basically slammed the whole idea and spoke about how her education at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary was unsatisfactory to her and how she learned much more for Mr. Kratzman at the Queen Elizabeth School. The next day all of the papers dismissed Joni as some rich rock star who didn't know anything about art anyway so why should she be taken seriously? As Joni tells it, she went home to L.A. and got serious. So, the song, Turbulent Indigo, has some very interesting references to that conference. I always thought when she said "You wanna make Van Goughs" she was referring to the style of painting with Eskimos and women, if we please, as the subject matter. But the Eskimos and the women are the Van Goughs themselves, fostered like sheep on a farm and harvested for what they can produce. I found that story very enlightening. Wow!! Many of our Canadian listers have written about the show and now I see what they're raving about. Great archival still photos and video examine Joni's childhood and the beginning of her career. To hear her peers like Crosby, Nash, and James Taylor talk about her ground-breaking artistry only validates what most of us on the JMDL already know...Joni is queen undisputedly. Joni talks candidly about her marriage to Chuck Mitchell and also details why she felt compelled to break up with Graham Nash. The production is well done and this "part one" ended just as STAS was released. One really slick part was a segment where Joni was performing the song "Woodstock" live on a grand piano and just as the video scene shifted the studio version of the song was inserted...right in time, right in key. Very cool. The show offers a warm and nicely detailed look at the formative events which led to Joni's musical career; I'm really looking forward to part two but am wondering how they will condense her career from 1970 to present into only one hour...still...if it's even half as good as part one it'll be memorable. I live in the UK, and don't suppose we'll get to see this gem for quite some time. I looked at the previews linked from the JMDL site, and they looked great! Can't wait. While I don't have facilities to convert NTSC video to our UK PAL standard, I *can* play NTSC videos. Therefore, if any kind US lister souls end up with a *spare* NTSC copy of the two shows, I'd gladly paypal some money over in return for a copy. UK listers note: I'll gladly host a video-viewing party one weekend in the next month or two if I can get hold of a copy. Any excuse for a bit of drinking and Joni really... So... if anyone in the US and Canada can help me (us) out, please let me know. Similarly, if any UK folk fancy a Cambridge gathering to view this gem if I get it, tell me! Note reply address at bottom.) I had another one of those Joni moments a coupla days ago on my way down to the south coast here in good ol' Blighty. As is often the case, I eschewed music for Radio 4. Radio 4 is an eclectic beast to say the least: chock full of esoterica such that you never quite know what you'll find when you turn on. On my 2.5 hour journey I got a selection of programs, including: something about heart disease; a seminar by a very interesting, charismatic and humble author whose name I forget (Q: How does your writing process work? A: I don't really know, or want to); something about the science of Formula-1 cars, and that of iris recognition technology; etc. You get the feel for it. The high point, getting back on track, was a wonderful short story that I thought I'd recommend. I won't spoil the plot, except to say that if the story behind The Magdalene Laundries (there, see, Joni content... hope it counts!) interests you, then this little story will resonate very strongly. Had me in tears to be frank, which is never good when hammering down a motorway at harumph-ty miles an hour (officer). It's called "The Sweetness Of Pears", but I'm afraid I don't know the author offhand, and can't get to the Internet right now to find out. Being so short, I'm fairly sure the text of it might be on the web, or at least a reference to it. A search through http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/ might also yield the goods. If I find a real reference in the next few days, I'll post it. In the meantime, good luck, it's worth finding.
