(njc) So . .. is "For Free" on a Bette album? that I could get? or...do I have to request a copy from Mr. Mueller? Meanwhile (I thought for sure Darice would have posted by now ...about Ben Taylor). The only relevance to this thread is...he told a Bette Midler joke, last Friday night in SF at his Cafe DuNord show (sold-out I might add, as was Sweetwater 2 nights later). A joke his dad had apparently told him. He'd asked the audience for a 'voice vote' on which to sing: a song of his dad's "Fire and Rain", or .. one of his own new ones: guess which won? His. OF course, and it was amazing. And afterwards people said: "Ok NOW do Fire and Rain!" "Do them both!" ( I must admit at that point I was screaming too). He fired back this Bette joke he'd heard from his dad. During a show, early on, (but not at the Continental, probably on Broadway), someone yelled: "Bette! take it off! Show us your tits!" and her reply was: "If I show them to you, that's it. The show is over." I'm sure he meeant this to mean: no, I won't do Fire and Rain too, and if I did, that would be my last. Further posts about Ben and his band and the tour will follow in the future, if anyone wants to hear. (Darice? hello?). I'd actually heard the Bette joke differently on one of her live videos or CD's. "Bette! show us your tits!" and Bette says: "For thirty bucks you think you get to see the whole thing? No. You don't get the whole thing for thirty bucks. No way". Richard n.p. Pitassi" Subject: Mr. Rogers (NJC) It was easy to parody the guy, and I admit to falling that low once or twice (gently). But Mr. Rogers was an institution in Pittsburgh where I grew up, and where the show originated and was filmed for 34 years. Regulars on his show were "locals" who often participated in significant ways in the local community, just as he did. One of them--I think it was either Don Brockett or John Costas; my memory's not as good as it used to be--had a regular jazz gig in or near the city. What also struck me, upon reading the many tributes yesterday, is just how large a role he played in introducing kids to good music. Fred Rogers was married to a concert pianist for nearly 50 years, and was an avid connoisseur of music himself. Of course, songs and music played a significant role in the everyday show. But over the years, in addition to the aforementioned regular who doubled as a jazz musician, he also had as guests the likes of Yo-Yo Ma and Wynton Marsalis. How many children now listen to music with greater delight or sharper perception as adults, either because of the quality musicians they first heard on Mister Roger's Neighborhood, or because the show so consistently encouraged their creative side more generally? A lot more could be said, here or elsewhere, and I'm sure a lot more will be. For now, I'll close with: Rest in peace, gentle man. So true, David. Plus Joni's couplet is so much stronger because she describes herself as being both surf AND sand, her constant theme of freedom vs. attachment, as opposed to: You are the ___________, I am the ____________(opposite) Her writing is typically so cliche-free, I think that's why lines like "one big boo hoo" & "nice kitty kitty" rubbed so many the wrong way, especially when it's laid alongside of a brilliant snippet like "every disc a poker chip, every song a one-night stand". I like your idea of comparative writing, by the way. I'll have to do a little research & see if I can find some other good examples. Joni's gift of vocabulary and metaphor isn't approached by most songwriters. Add to this, her ability to compose music who's sound also serves the lyrical content. Many popular songwriters, no matter how much they may tweak the language in their lyrics, don't have the capability or instinct to structure melody or chord changes that evoke the feeling in the content of the song. In other words, someone else might be able to write a song about a strange boy, but the tune itself would not have that snaky, ebb and flow, sensual sound to go along with it; Joni structures the sound to mimic our global perception of what "strange" is. I was just writing off list to Mitch that Down To You amazes me because, even without words, the music itself is perfect accompaniment to those times you find yourself walking along, feeling somehow disconnected and connected to passersby. And though Joni is often cited for her lyrics, I don't think she gets near enough recognition for her talent for musical composition! Back to the point, Lulu sang and appeared in "To Sir With Love" I know you love it !! Paul Simon turned up in a few films ?? Bob Dylan and Kris Kristoferson turned up in "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid" ?? Garfunkel who has a new album out, has done quite a few films. Someone on the radio said liking Paul Simon is now not cool, who comes up with this IN or Out nonsense. A friend of mine saw Paul when she was at Teacher Training college in Chester, he was doing the University circuit and wrote a lot of his early work here, "Homeward Bound" was written while he waited for a train in Darlington? A lot of American artists seemed to have hitch-hiked around Europe with their guitars in the 60s and 70s, maybe they still do, back then we had the draft dodgers too. Did I read something here about someone making a film about Joni,s life?? "Well everybody knows her, she^s the one to love" Jonathan Edwards ?? where did he come from and go to???
