Hey Doug, I've got some Joni bootleg vinyl I'm looking to dump, so maybe we can work something out. What I have: "Spring Songs" This is a 2-LP set of her show in Durham, NC, March 24, 1974. I've already transferred it directly to CD from vinyl. The quality of the recording is very shitty, so don't be thinking you're getting a pristine concert. "BBC 1972" This may be from one of her May '72 England appearances, there's no way to really be sure I suppose. No references in the dialogues on the record that would indicate that. It's one LP, and in this case the recording is pretty good. I've already transferred it to CD. How much dosh did you make?? I used to go out to Buckhead (where all the bars and ritzy restaurants are-yuppie hangout) and play on weekends from 10ish till 2, sometimes later...I didn't do so bad-I would make on an average around $50 most nights which works out to be about $12/hour. Not bad for playing on the street. The bad thing is I was playing for very long periods of time so these nights would leave me completely worn out and worthless the next day or so. Plus I was playing for a lot of drunk people who often probably thought I was homeless or desperate cause in their minds they couldn't think of any other reason why someone would do this. You really have to be kind of brave. I know in other places where busking is more common, people don't assume that but here it was different. Some nights it was really interesting. Once a black man handed me a cold beer as a hooker tried to sing on the mic with me. Another time, someone left me a full bag of food from a nearby restaurant. Once, really late into the night, this drunk man handed me a $20 dollar bill and said,"Now I'm giving you a 20 but I'm not the devil," and walked off laughing madly.(reference to "Friend of the Devil" for those who don't know). The night the Braves won the world series(1995) I played in Buckhead and made $100. Most I ever made from busking. I played in Paris and made nothing. Made about 10-15 dollars in Cambridge Square once. Didn't do so well in New Orleans. How much dosh did you make?? We, as in the band, were thinking about doing this sometime in London. The sticking point for me was that I'd need an acoustic bass, and even then probably wouldn't be heard. Use to make $50-$70 an evening for about 3 hours work. I think that converts to 3 or 4 pounds. Anyway I loved it it was great experience. What music you played had a direct influence how much you make. Neil Young and rolling stones made the most money and Cat Stevens as well. At one point Some Girls had just come out so I played Beast of burden for three hours strait every night and made a lot of coin. Down side it really sucks in the winter and you get paid in change. I got stopped by the cops a few times thinking I was knocking off phone booths or something. It's a whole nother story but if it were not for my time as a busker I would never have met my wife. There was myself and another English bloke, who was the lead singer, and then two girls, French and German. Strangest donation: a bowl of soup and a kipper. A record producer once left his business card, and we ended up in a recording studio making a record, although it came to nothing, but it was great fun. We travelled around visiting a couple of famous German rock singers, and we played for them, hoping for fame and fortune. If you can find a good spot in nice weather, and you can get people to clap, dance or sing along with you, it's surprising how much you can make. Germany's a good country for this as they have a tradition of artists playing outside, so people join in the spirit of the thing. As a matter of fact, I did have a Joni dream a couple of weeks ago. I dreamt she came over to my house with her entourage one afternoon. They came in up the back fire escape, after checking out the garden. I was somewhat embarassed because my toilet wasn't working! What if they started drinking and smoking, I worried? I laughed at that one the next day! Oh, the twisted workings of the human mind... On another subject, reading the 2000 London Times interview, I was struck by this narrative: Joni: "Someone coming up to me on the street and saying that they love what I do? That kind of reaction is not coming out of a sense of appropriateness. That is coming out of kindredness. Which is wonderful, if embarrassing for both parties. We're strangers, after all, and a lot of times those people are so earnest and overwhelmed that they look as if they're going to implode. The only possible response is to give them a good hug, which I do. And that makes for a very real and sweet encounter. Those people whom I've hugged on the street - they're the honours and the good reviews." This really surprised me, that Joni would be responsive to demonstrations of ``gushing` like that, on the street. People I talked to about this at last year's Jonifest all said they were very uncomfortable with the role of `gushing fan..`` Which begs the question, did anyone on this list ever gush, and if so, what was Joni's response to that? Would you , if you had the chance? It kills me to admit it, but I know I probably would if I had the chance. I probably couldn't hold back. I actually did gush once in the presence of a lovely American opera diva, who received my attentions warmly. However, I was considerably younger then. I think youth adds some charm to the gush. A middle-aged person gushing is quite another story, isn't it? PS. I saw Nora Jones in concert the other night on Muchmusic TV or whatever. I must say, that woman has no stage presence whatsoever. She looked bored and annoyed with the audience. Last summer she appeared at teh Montreal Jazz festival when she was already suffering from overexposure and burn-out. Or, is it somewhere in between those two positions, ie that posts about Joni, Joni related artists and music in general would be welcome, as long as all the other stuff were filtered out? I don't suppose there would be consensus, but I'm sure at least some of the people on the JO list would fall into that position. I've tried posting it twice and it didn't go through to my knowledge - maybe that means I should remain a lurker and that this shouldn't be read at all!!!! Bear with me - it normally takes me ten times to get something right!!!! Hi all, I love Joni - I love this list. I joined in June of 2000, and when I posted for the second time and forgot the NJC tag, I was immediately slammed by a listmember offlist who is not a member of the list anymore. I was so humbled and humiliated; that I unsubscribed immediately; and then I thought - why should one person stop me from joining a list about the favorite singer/songwriter/painter/poet, etc., in my life? I immediately resubscribed and cannot tell you all how grateful I am for the wonderful people I've met, interacted with off list via e-mail, and for those who have supported me through my somewhat off-kilter life. Many of you have been life-savers/sanity-savers for me. I hope you know that. I love the banter, the insights into peoples' lives; and of course, all of the Joni information from those of you much more knowledgeable and intelligent than I. Where else could I hear from people throughout the U.S., England, Canada, Ireland, Argentina, and all of those far away places, from people who love Joni as much as I do? How much about Joni and her life and works I never knew! I still hesitate to post often - "maybe it's paranoia, maybe it's sensitivity..." this list is full of intelligent people, and I do fear being "slammed" as I was in the early days of my list membership. I'm working on that...... I agree wholeheartedly with Ashara regarding getting "stuck on one topic." I love nothing better than to wake up on a Saturday morning, grab a fresh cup of coffee (with a cat or two on my lap) and read about whatever someone on this list has to say. The volume of political posts make me weary....and sad sometimes. I guess I must admit I come here to escape some of the sad realities of war and life that I am bombarded with constantly - but I don't mind political posts or actually anything in moderation; but as I think Colin pointed out, when the bulk of the posts are political, I feel like I'm on some sort of political mailing list, and if I wanted that I would have joined one specifically. I am certainly not without my obsessions too....I could talk about Laura Nyro endlessly, and especially Joni's early and unreleased recordings; but I think people would tire pretty quickly if I posted about Laura Nyro six times a day!!! I love the diversity of the list - and was once on the joni-only - I missed out on a great deal of wonderful stories and discussions! But of course, that is a person's choice. I am still somewhat stunned when I get 130 e-mails downloading into my mailbox at a time!! So again, I've stuck my neck out and posted - I hope I can finally feel more free to do that without admonishment. To those of you who responded to my December post, know I hold you especially dear - write and send me your address again. My computer crashed in December and I lost many e-mails from people whom I wanted to stay connected personally with. For those of you whom I've never met or written to, know that I read your posts and feel that I know you, if only from a distance. Bob Murphy and Catherine in Toronto never fail to make me smile; Bob Muller knows his music like no one I've ever met; Mags is never without a kind word; and there are so many more of you who are so knowlegeable and intelligent; and many of you whom I won't mention as to not embarrass have been most kind and caring to me and simply caring in general. What better internet family could I ask for? If this seems shallow, or too "caring" to some, sorry, but it's the truth for me. Let's stay kind, caring and sensitive to others' feelings. People are so precious. We could be "Here Today and Gone Tomorrow." With Best wishes and peace to all!
