Did anyone else read the article or remember this? It's in the JMDL library. My favorite pitiful grammies moment was when the lead singer of Limp Bizcit, Fred Durst (I can't believe I know his name) said " I hope we are all in AGREENESS" about this war thing or being against the war. I cannot stand it when entertainers make political statements on awards shows. Why would anyone care about what this idiot had to say? He wasn't even accepting an award but presenting one. But he actually said "agreeness" instead of "agreement". I was on the phone with my friend, Rob, from TX, and we just howled. Not only is he so arrogant and self righteous, but stupid, and I would bet a year's salary he doesn't know one thing about the issues. Did Sheryl Crow actually want to look like a hooker? And with her big diamond peace sign, I thought I would puke. Shallow. Please, don't take from this that I am pro war or take this as any kind of a political statement. It is not. I would never post any of my feelings about the pending war in this forum. These people just irk me. All of us that have met him are blessed as a result. A bit more about Sweet Sucker Dance...like I said, I spun Mingus again this morning, paying particular attention to SSD. Even if you find the jazz melody inaccessible, the quality of Joni's vocal instrument is almost beyond belief. Pure singing. What further amazed me is that she gets virtually no instrumental "clues" from the band to play off of - she has to make those jazz intervals vocally on her own. It's not just walking without a net, it's like walking without a f*cking wire! And the result remains hands down for me Joni's finest hour vocally. It's a delightful, funny, low key film about very recognisable people doing everyday stuff. Liev Screiber is very funny in this film as a guy with "commitment issues". The divine Catherine Keener is the neurotic woman looking for love, and she's never been better. Kevin Corrigan is terrific as the "ugly guy" from the video store, while Anne Heche shows her class as a trainee counsellor - there are some spot-on therapy scenes which will elicit groans of recognition from anyone who's been in therapy or is a therapist. It's fine to call for everyone to be > civil and reasonable but I'd bet that shortly after this current "state of > the list" discussion ends, things will be right back to the "state" that > has prompted this thread > Maybe the "state" that prompted this thread is just something that always happens. I wonder if limiting invidual bandwidths will really be much more than a placebo for what ails the list. I can be biting and abrasive with 1 post or 100. Maybe nothing ails the list. Maybe the things that got riled up are what happens when a large community posts on passionate subjects. And everyone's passions are different. I know that the things that got me going and spurned to state my side are now limited to people who litter and those who mix gruyere cheese with Velveeta slices. Other than that, my personal path has moved my focus elsewhere. Other people are different. There is just too wide a variety of personalities, communication style and interpretation style. Within that, there are those with a buttload of free time or those who are extremely eloquent at the drop of a hat. I think that limiting the bandwidth just puts an unnecessary crimp here. A while ago, I read a wonderful suggestion for handling one's road rage and that was to drive as though the person ahead of you was your grandmother. Maybe she has stress incontinence and just had a big sneeze and is trying to get a more comfortable spot on her seat. Maybe she's just having a slow day. The point is to gently channel your "rage" to compassion, understanding and peace. As Scott pointed out, people just aren't always going to be civil but maybe we can practice the Grandmother technique. Instead of firing up with "jesushchristonapopsiclesitck-I'm gonna mow you down with rhetoric" we can think: "wow, that was some heck of a sneeze, I hope you get to change your Depends soon." And sometimes we won't be able to do that and it gets bad and then it gets better and so it goes. Life is for learning. But I find it almost impossible to sustain any interest in a book like "American Psycho" in which I can't identify with or even *like* the characters. I can't think of any other writer who can get away with this, and I think it's only because BEE is such a good writer that I keep on reading. As far as Bateman's obsession with expensive brand names in "American Psycho," I thought the constant naming of the designers of every single article of clothing characters were wearing got very tiring after a few hundred pages. I kept wanting to say, "I got it the first fifty times, Brett." And don't even get me started on the murders (spew!) or the starving rat (gag!). I've had a couple of possible leads but it's very difficult when the intermediaries are not Joni fans.
