Hi Kate, If I'm remembering correctly, the song was "Gravity". The whole thing and a few other songs are on her website: http://www.viennateng.com/high/music/download.html. The piano sound was clearer when she was on the show, maybe because there was very little accompaniment by the show band. I think it's a beautiful song. The intimate sound of her singing and piano playing reminds me of Tori Amos, but without Tori's dramatic breathing and stool straddling (which is so distracting when I see her perform I can't pay attention to the music). Vienna Teng seemed a little self-conscious and uncomfortable. It might have been her first nationally televised appearance. That's enough to make anybody nervous. I found such genuineness very appealing, in addition to being captured by the music. It's also on Steve Klink's CD with Barbara Boyle on vocal. She has the only potty-mouth version to date. Like most of FTR, WOHAM is woefully underdone in terms of covers. Any of you 'show music' people like his Rodgers > and Hammerstein stuff? Jerry? I listened to his version of "Ombra Mai Fu" and its the first time I heard that one sung by a bass baritone. I don't know if I like Terfel's version for there are vocal flights in the song that just don't do well with a baritone. Any thoughts? When contralto Nathalie Stutzmann sang rare Mozart arias in one disc, you marvel at her voice but the songs you associate with sopranos just didn't do well with her voice. People like myself who may have belonged to the full list at one time, but have had their fill of the tiresome political meanderings that others mistakenly believe we all should be subjected to, wish to avoid this sort of dialogue completely; it breeds contempt... If that were not the truth, I wouldn't have changed my subsciber status to begin with. I know I'm not alone. I had typed up a real storm, but I've decided to keep it short.. see, I'm already getting sucked in. I use this list as a supplement to a rather serious hobby that has become a major component of my short 33 years. When it becomes about other people's politics, things get blown out of proportion, feelings get hurt...people write things they don't really mean...in short, something pleasant and cool turns into something unpleasant and irritating. Suddenly, reading your JMDL mail gets you all worked up into a frothy lather about subject matters completely irrelevant to what brought you here to begin with. I'm certainly not trying to stifle worthwhile intellectual discussion and debate...it's simply not what I come HERE for. I come HERE to talk about Joni Mitchell. And I CERTAINLY shouldn't have to put up with this sort of thing: "I quite agree but since all of you use Mitchell as a forum for your politics and personal ambitions you shouldnt be judgemental of someone at least trying to invoke a dialogue that is more than the horse shit you just sent" Drawing borderlines and establishing boundaries are two very different things. Let's keep our priorities in order, shall we? Over and Out. - -C - ---- Original Message ----- From: "vince" To: "Christopher Treacy" Cc: "Suzanne MarcAurele" Sent: Sunday, January 26, 2003 1:21 AM Subject: Re: That Wretched Woman From New Jersey NJC NJC NJC NJC > I would suspect that Suzanne was referring to Joni Mitchell's paintings > in the stuff that came in T'log and thus her post was by definition > Joni Mitchell related, not NJC.
