Don't really think about it that much. For me personally the whole is-there-or-isn't-there-a-God is basically irrelevant. But what I do think about sometimes is why there's so much hub-bub between believers and non-believers. Seems to me no one should care one way or the other. If I'm wrong, and there actually is a God, I figure I'm still OK. After all, I don't have to believe in gravity to stay on the ground. My favorite CDs of 2002 are a mixed bag of new and old. Since I don't play my old vinyl anymore, rediscovering an album on CD after many years can be a real treat. In no particular order: Heathen - David Bowie -- as good as he's been in years Essence - Lucinda Williams -- I like it better than Carwheels Milk of the Moon -- Greg Brown -- My first CD of his; really good Ram -- Paul McCartney -- Had forgotten what a joy this is; not a bad cut and one of the best beginning moments of any record I know Travelogue -- you know who Hissing of Summer Lawns -- ditto -- only got the CD for this this year. Don't know why I waited so long. So brilliant. In some ways I think it's her best album. Combines the 'hot, hot places' of C&S with the 'icy altitudes' to come on H. To my ears it's her most enjoyable masterpiece. Songs for Only the Lonely -- Frank Sinatra -- Wow. Talk about intense! Not a pandering bit of pop to be found on this disc. The artistry, ambition and integrity of this recording amazes me. Bird in the House -- Railroad Earth --- Happy, tuneful, well-played, acoustic kinda 'newgrass'. Don't often hear music that's full of joy much anymore. Not ten there; but that'll do. Bruce ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Jan 2003 23:13:23 EST From: Aerchak@aol.com Subject: joni in concert I was looking tonight at the "Blondes in the Bleachers" section of the JMDL site. Partly because my lovely niece, Clarissa, ( who is getting Joni CDs for her 23rd b/day) gave me her laptop ( I switched and I'm having fun and adjusting-it's fast) and it seems that hardly anyone ever saw Joni prior to 1998,or at least, no one has posted about it. I only saw Joni live once and that was in 1976 but i am so glad that I did. I did not realize at the time that it would probably be the only time in my life that I would ever see her perform. Anyway, I've been thinking about what to write about that concert. I wish I had it all stored right in my head, but you know it was (I just did the math) 27 years ago, so it's not a whole video, just images or moments that fit into a larger scenario. Anyway, I do remember being really close. This is when great artists/musicians could actually play for people. I remember being awestricken. I remember Joni being very thin and noticeing that, thinking she was too thin. I know she wore black pants. I clearly her remember sitting at the piano. And I remember her introducing and performing "Coyote" as a new song. No, we've tried that, Mags. Doesn't work. I'm thinking of nick-naming the old boy "Puxtahawney Les" as he only sticks his head out of his hidey-hole once a year or so. But maybe, just maybe, if ALL of us let him know how much he is LOVED & APPRECIATED, he'll pay us more visits. That'd be about 800 posts, but you know, he's worth it, right? Les, YOU DA MAN! Can I get a witness? I am amazed at the amount of vibrato in her voice, almost like she is doing a little bit of Joan Baez. It's really fantastic how her instrument has evolved over the years and I guess, how she has kept giving it new 'tunings'. BRUSHES WITH FAME, CHAPTER IV: How'd we miss this one? We're at an opening for Joni Mitchell's paintings, and we sashay up to the original Lady of the Canyon and ask her to sign a copy of the art catalog to our then newborn daughter Hannah. Joni goes, "I've got a new niece named Hannah!' Oh, the times we've had! That was posted yesterday on jmdl.com. Niece? Joni doesn't have any siblings, right? Maybe a God-niece? Or am I missing something....I forget the granddaughter's name, is that who they meant???? And which art opening is this referring to, something recent? Inquiring minds want to know. I loved Kate of the North's tidbit about Joni out with her parents and them nagging her and her telling them to lay off - lol. Once a daughter, always a daughter ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2003 #22 **************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
