I attended the Joni show at the Concord Pavillion in May, 2000. After the show, I wandered down front to see how some of the orchestra was mic-ed (it sounded so good). I got to talking to one of the crew and he told me that Vince arranged all of the "old" material (the songs performed after the BSN material) in less than a week before the tour began! Some of that stuff is very complicated (especially "Ludwig's Tune" and "For The Roses"), so I was doubly impressed that he cranked it out so quickly AND the arrangements were as great as they were. So yes, I think that just Joni let him go, perhaps describing what she wanted and then making changes after he had done the initial charts. Personally, I think most of the arrangements on "Travelogue" are stunning.... Russ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Jan 2003 00:46:42 -0800 From: Richard Goldman Subject: Gangs of NY Soundtrack CD [NJC] Well, it looks like it's already out there: here's the blurb from Amazon.com about it. Very interesting. Richard - ------- Editorial Reviews Amazon.com Martin Scorsese's sprawling meditation on the rise of street gangs in 19th-century New York (the roots of the modern mafia) also became another soundtrack buff's "What If?" after the director scrapped the original orchestral underscore of modern collaborator (Cape Fear, The Age of Innocence, Bringing Out the Dead)/veteran scoring legend Elmer Bernstein and replaced it with this typically rich, Robbie Robertson-supervised collection of eclectic pop, folk, and neo-classical tracks. The latter come courtesy of three brooding excerpts from film composer Howard Shore's previously unpremiered concert piece Brooklyn Heights, tracks that help emphasize the film's darker emotional gravitas. Much of the other catalog choices by Robertson and Scorsese lean on an evocative slate of Celtic and folk-tinged selections that range from hammered dulcimers, fiddles, and tin whistles to the spare, emotive balladry of Linda Thompson and Shu-De; even U2's main theme, "The Hands That Built America," is cast in a similar mold. But that Irish musical stew gets leavened by everything from the postmodern dirges of Peter Gabriel and Jocelyn Pook to a black field hand recording by legendary musicologist Alan Lomax and even the Chinese flavors of "Beijing Opera Suite." It's an imaginative, compelling mix, one that gratifyingly pushes the usually staid boundaries of what film scores can truly encompass. --Jerry McCulley ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Jan 2003 05:56:17 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Volume #36 - Make your resolution! Vince Mendoza, for his great talent and for being a patient and willing collaborator." I'm pretty sure Joni is happy with the end result and there are many good reasons for that, but to me it looks more like Klein's project from a production perspective. Mendozza did a GREAT job with the orchestration AND the conducting. I'm a musician, and I can't think of anybody who could have done that better than he did. This album is great, I think. By the way it wouldn't exist without Joni, but producing such a project, that is dealing with conducting the WHOLE project, is certainly out of her realm, indeed. Yes, the Democrats will have to be fierce in order to get through Bush's bullshit that so many people believe. I hope they're willing to do that. And that they remember, and speak to, the more than half of the voters who DID NOT vote for Bush! It's strange how so many politicians have forgotten them. It took about half a day for Bush, the "I want to work with everyone" guy, to forget about all those voters. No surprise, since Bush's actions usually don't match his words, and there's no one, press included, pointing that out. The latest is Bush saying he's so concerned about people without jobs, which is a lot of people these days. He sounds like such a caring guy. And yet the economic stimulus package he wants includes decreasing tax on stock dividends and speeding up the tax rebates, which benefits the wealthiest people, not the workers. With most workers' 401-K savings plans in the dumper, WHAT stock dividends do they have these days? So who's going to make up for this lessened tax revenue? And not extending the unemployment benefits that ran out at Christmastime for the first 800,000 unemployed workers riles me, especially since that's a tax fund every worker pays into for their entire working life, and then those benefits are taxed heavily in the following year, penalties for not paying enough tax included, so unemployment benefits are NOT a free handout. The Democrats tried to get benefits extended and supposedly Bush was in favor of that, but the Republicans in Congress were not. (Strange how Bush can manage to get his way in everything else.) And people don't think there's any difference between the parties? Anyone surprised that Bush is now wondering who to put on the Supreme Court? Anyone surprised that there are anti-abortion laws being considered now? Uh, oh, I'm about to start screeching! So, yes, the Democrats will need to be very noisy. I'm playing bass these days in a band called "Stryngs", along with our very own Martin Giles on guitar, and Sarah Stringer (a.k.a Strings, not on the list, but likes Joni anyway) on vocals. We've been burning up studio time like it's going out of fashion of late, and we're still plugging away, but some of the material is in a state where we can release a few tasters in advance of the CD being ready. It's not properly mixed yet, and there might yet be some other changes, but this is stuff we're pretty damn happy with so far. To that end, I've put sample fragments of four tracks up on our web site, http://www.stryngs.com/ I've been looking forward to this point for so very long now: being able to finally let you, my friends on the JMDL, hear the fruits of our labours. I'm so looking forward to hearing your feedback. If you want to reach the whole band, use bandATstryngs.com, replacing "AT" with @ And yes, before you ask, our website is still under construction. As I found out when I tried it on my Mac here. Additionally, IE5 for Mac OS X doesn't like downloading files with long names, and truncates the file name. I'll put some extra instructions for Mac OS X on the website. I can't help if you're using OS 9 or older. Still, if you're using a Mac with only one mouse button, you'll probably have to use Alt-click to get a context menu that'll let you save the link to disk. - --Chris Marshall chris@hatstand.org "The hearth rug of joy has been yanked from beneath my feet, and as the cress seeds of self doubt germinate in the beer-sodden student carpet of my mind, I lay my face gently atop the threadbare pillow of despair." ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 03 Jan 2003 12:35:43 -0800 From: "Lori Fye" Subject: Re: Stryngs - sample tracks on web (finally) (NJC) Wow!
