People who are fixated on something to the point of obsession; 'trainspotters' was / is another term for them and a perfect example of their type of activity. In the UK there are many people who travel the rail networks with lists of train numbers, class, category, name etc and who cross out the numbers of the trains that they spot (hence the name). One must spot the train in person of course; 'fudging' (crossing out a number when you haven't seen the train) is a cardinal sin among trainspotters. It is the trainspotters equivalent of the 'C' word. Lower than a fudger is impossible to be. Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle? Real isn't how you are made, said the Skin Horse. It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real. Does it hurt? asked the Rabbit? Sometimes, said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. When you are Real, you don't mind being hurt. Does it happen all at once, like being wound up he asked, or bit by bit? It doesn't happen all at once, said the Skin Horse. You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't often happen to people who break easily or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. If you haven't discovered a Toronto band called "The Cowboy Junkies", you're in for a treat. They've used a mandolin on some songs since "The Trinity Session" at least. It seems to me that the peak for mando songs was during the "The Caution Horses" and "Pale Moon, Crescent Sun" era. I have other favorites among their canon but these 3 have lots of mando. By the way, JMDL's own Les Irvin plays a mean mandolin. I think he's a better, more interesting player than the Junkies' Jeff Bird. Les'es jams can be sampled on some of the 8 JoniFest 2002 discs. I agree about the Wilson sisters. Those girls do it all. A few weeks ago I picked up a later album called "Heart". It has "What About Love" on it which sounded a little new-agey on the radio but the album translates to "living room music" very well. Even in Bluegrass(which I can listen to only in small doses) always uses them in the background or minor leads. This is a bunch of crap. Someone needs to bring this instrument (and the lute) back into rock/pop and most definitely back into classical! Have any of you noticed that their is a lute playing a tiny part in T'log? Will < As a mandolinist, I am loving this thread, especially the tips about new mandolinists on the block. Thanks. As an instrument the mandolin is indeed, much maligned, partly because it can be made to sound pretty appalling, though probably not as bad as the dreaded banjo. But the classical mandolin can be stunningly beautiful to listen to, although, sadly, classical mandolinists are few and far between. Anyone interested in the subject should visit mandolincafe.com for a treasure trove of information, including a classical mandolin discussion list as well as bluegrass, jazz, celtic and other styles of playing. Also I should recommend Radim Zenkle as an extraordinary player, worth listening to. I guess Rod Stewart did a lot to popularise the mandolin in pop music but that was a long time ago. Also in the UK, folkies like Kate Rusby tend to use the instrument sensitively. I had noticed the lute on T'log and appreciated as the nearest thing to an accoustic guitar on the album. I still miss Joni's guitar playing badly and can't really come to terms with it's absence from one of her albums. Anyway, I've never heard the Heart track mentioned so, I obviously need to put that right soon. The guy who "accidentally" sent me that nasty email was totally mortified that I posted it and has apologized several times. (Did I violate the JMDL rules with this, Les?) I don't mean my cheerleading for Joni's new music as an attack on people not so thrilled. Yet that seems to be the way it comes across to some if not many listers. From now on I'm keeping my growing awe for Joni's evolving artistry to myself. Why do I care if anyone else likes it anyway?
