What I have done is bought the copy of whatever it is that I was anxious to here. If the gift did come later on, I would take it to the store were it was bought and picked out something different. Your friend would never need to know. If for some reason your friend would give it to you with the wrapper removed because she listened to it first, etc...(yes I have received gifts like this and I have still appreciated them), then I would tell her the truth. I bought it because you failed to give it to me despite the fact that you knew my level of desperation to hear Joni's new album. If she knows that you are a big Joni fan and that you participate on this list every day, then I think she should be prompt with the goods. Especially if she knows that the only reason you have not bought it is because she said she would give it to you. I don't think your friend will take it the wrong way if you portray yourself as a true Joni addict that is going through withdrawal. Hopefully she will realize that you just couldn't wait one more day. When Judy came out with the album "Voices", I bought it for a friend of mine 2 weeks before her birthday. Thinking that she might buy it I drove by her house, picked her up and took her to my dad's farm where there is a beautiful lake. It was night time and slightly breezy and I already had 2 lounge chairs, a table with coffee and doughnut and my boom box. I played it for her and she didn't even know what to say she was so thrilled. I did not let her see the packaging or anything until her actual b-day. This made her thrill at actually receiving it even bigger because she already new how great it was. It's like taking someone to their favorite restaurant. They already know what to expect. Till this day she talks about the great way in which i let her listen to her gift. It would have been nice if your friend had given you a sneak preview on Thanksgiving. (<----- JC!) it was great - i just sat at the soundboard and listened... she forgot the lyrics "he tried hard to help me, he put me at ease" and so after she fumbled with the first line, i chimed in and sang "he put me at ease", and she stopped and we spent a minute trying to remember the "he tried hard to help me" line. and then she continued the song to the end. i was flipping out - i thought she might play it during the show and my greedy little mind was thinking that the resident Ark taper-dude, jeff, was probably going to tape the show on his trusty DAT, and then i would have a cover to contribute to our collection! well, a) jeff didn't bring his taping equipment b) she didn't play River for the show anyhow. but i sat in a big room all by myself and hear lynn miles sing 'River'. i love working sound at the Ark. :-) peace, yael ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Dec 2002 22:57:35 -0500 From: "Heather" Subject: RE: joni's statue Here is the website for Oldenburg. http://www.oldenburgvanbruggen.com/ He and his wife have current projects on-going. The ad implies that Joni signed it for the purpose of raising funds for a charity or political movement. I don't think it's a charity though because a.) they don't offer their non-profit # and b.) what kind of charity runs auctions on ebay? I smell a rat. If someone would cough up the $5,000.00 "buy-it-now" price, it would be a _purchase_ not a tax-deductible donation to a charity, right guys? Kakki? I think it's a political group with some unorthodox fund-raising techniques. He has 122 items up on ebay right now and only a total of 12 transactions behind him. 'roland' says the poster "has been sitting around her Los Angeles home ever since then and does show some normal wear (although no tears)." Am I to believe that a.) Joni has proofs at her house and b.) she stores them recklessly? The woman who frames her paintings before she photographs them doesn't store her _proofs_ correctly?! My poster from "voices" doesn't have any flaws at all. What's "normal wear" for a sheet of paper stored in a cool, dry, dark environment? What say ye, librarians? Best of all, this political group has a freakin' reserve "price" on the donation they're willing to accept in exchange for a token of the donation! The present bid, $405, has not satisfied the reserve price. Ahh! So, they're prepared to turn down a $405 donation to their movement! Interesting..... Sign me "Cynical in Cincinnati", Lama Yahoo! I think so now, too. It's probably tricky because some money would need to be raised before an artist is hired since usually there's a portion of the fee paid upfront, even before the sketches are done, and yet such sketches in the publicity materials would be helpful with the fundraising. To get the process started, I'd think a graphic artist would be able to come up with a visual to get the basic idea across. > Maybe efforts should be put into trying to find the right artist first? Are there PR > channels within the working artist world -- such as magazines or newsletters or web sites > -- where the committee could announce its intentions and seek interested sculptors who > might want to submit a plan? Assuming the search goes beyond Canada, even a press release to a few regular newspapers would get the word out, and it would probably be picked up from there by different publications. There are websites that compile news about art from all different sources, such as http://www.artsjournal.com/. It may be possible to let them know whenever anything is in a Saskatoon paper, for example. And press releases to Artnews and Artforum would probably be a good idea also. And foundries where bronze sculptures are made would know of the artists using their facilities, and they could probably be contacted. > BTW, I love your ideas, Debra, and Michael O's and some of the other thoughts that have > been put forth. Thanks Bob! I was feeling unappreciated. Childish, I know. Or maybe it's the Leo thing. We need lots of attention. Fellow Leo Susan (the Guzzi) would understand. I made a CD single of Winter Lady last year just to give to the people I love. Please put me on your mailing list for the Joni box set! I've been urging a 4 CD box of rare recordings for 10 years, writing to Joni personally about this twice (once with a list of suggestions). I was so happy that many were included on Misses (esp Wolf) and was even happier to see so many others included on T (esp Otis). Does anyone else sense that Joni doesn't want a tribute album until she can no longer make music or is dead??? She will ALWAYS be my favorite guitarist. Her painting is wowing me more every day. I just wish she'd take up the piano again! After many years and hundreds of listens, what are the 'false alarms' in Amelia? In the Icarus verse I understand the false alarm to be a love affair that didn't work out. But what about in the other verses? They all end in 'it was just a false alarm.' What does IT refer to? There isn't an obvious subject for the pronoun. This has been driving me a little crazy for almost 30 years now. >> You give me much more with your question than I can possibly give with my answer. In the 20 years that this has been among my very favorite songs (all versions) I've always interpreted "it was just a false alarm" to mean that Amelia was just decades ahead of her time. I just noticed that "Icarus *ascending* on beautiful foolish arms" defies the myth of Icarus actually *descending* with wings burnt by the sun. Perhaps Joni sees Icarus here as the Phoenix embodied by Amelia. BTW, has anyone seen the Star Trek Voyager episode where Captain Janeway thaws Amelia from five centuries of sleep on some distant planet? Talk about GREAT myths.....
