I am curious about > this. I haven't heard that she's not able; just that she's having some difficulty due to post-polio syndrome. I think the problem may be more with the left hand than the right, which might explain why she uses different tunings for every song and with the VG8 she just has it programmed to sound like these tunings without having to retune every time. If you use the open tunings, usually you only have to hold down one or two fingers of the left hand on the strings, or else bar across the whole thing or just the top few strings, depending on what chord she's playing. She doesn't hold down a lot of full bars, at least not one right after the other, so I guess that doesn't strain the left hand as much as it could (maybe her guitar is strung at a low tension too so she doesn't have to press to hard?) This makes sense if she's right-handed and I presume she is. I think her right hand is fine. So she can paint and do all her interesting right-hand fingering on the guitar. If she's a lefty, my theory is blown to hell, but I don't believe she is - I remember in the PWMAM video that she held the pallet in her left hand and painted with the right. ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Dec 2002 12:47:14 -0500 (EST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: OF ALL TIME... --- Little Bird wrote: > FAVE: Hejira - the original (love the Travelogue > version also) > LEAST FAVE: Woodstock (I could just never get into > this song and I really don't like her "dying cat" > vocals at the end. It's not a bad album at all, as far as holiday music goes (which, let's face it, is often really awful). I like the big band-style arrangements and his voice sounds quite good (without much of the mono-tonal stuff he has done so much of). Anyway, I have to agree that, for this Joni fan, his treatment of River misses the mark (but of course he gets to decide which mark he's aiming for, doesn't he). I've read on the web that Barry's fans are ga-ga over River. But no matter how he does it, I think "it's a good thing" when singers cover Joni compositions and spread around some siquomb to people who might not otherwise be exposed. Some of them, no doubt, will pick up a copy of Hits as a result. We have beautiful sunny days all throughout winter, unlike for example British Columbia which is overcast and much more like England in terms of climate. Like today, when you look out your window (and don't look at the ground), it looks like it could be mid summer, but in fact it's minus 5C and there's thick snow everywhere. It's a good place to live if you're thinking of moving to Canada, so long as you can stand the cold. If you're an active, outdoor person, Saskatoon is probably not for you because the winters are long. But if you're not, then it's a lovely town to live in. House prices are low and people are incredibly friendly, honest and straightforward. There are more coffee houses and restaurants here than I've ever seen in a small town, and people use them, so there's always somewhere lively to go. And we apparently have the most used (relative to population) public library in North America, which says good things about the people here. Another nice place to move to would be Victoria, or anywhere along the Okanagan in BC - fabulous peaches!
