I think Joni in her interviews and other public speaking has always taken care to avoid being phony - that is anathema to her, IMO - you can almost see her gagging at the thought of feigning humility or false praise. However, that does not mean that she does not try to be tactful (not that she always succeeds - but I think she often if not usually tries, where her true feelings are somewhere near neutral). Here, I think she may have been employing that rare literary device called "euphimism". She could have said "affected" or "pretentious" (which is my guess as being closer to what she felt) instead of "ambitious". I like Willem Dafoe as Jesus Christ in Martin Scorsese's THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST for three major reasons: (1) I like Scorsese even if some of his films are variations of previous movies (MEAN STREETS, GOODFELLAS, etc.) and even if he occasionally missteps (CAPE FEAR). (2) I read Nikos Kazantzakis THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST and was fascinated by Jesus Christ's duality. (3) I thought the film perfectly cast Dafoe as a flawed God, Barbara Hershey as Mary Magdalene and, most poignantly Harvey Keitel as Judas (remember that scene towards the end when Judas let out this goose-bump inducing "You betrayed me!" to Jesus?!). But on the subject of Dafoe, I thought he looked quite atypical by Hollywood standards but his appearances in films like THE ENGLISH PATIENT and SHADOW OF A VAMPIRE proved that he is "scarily" good as foils to protagonists (although I can't quite understand why he and Julianne Moore appeared in Madonna's film BODY OF EVIDENCE). Just wanted to let you know that I will be doing my last gig for 2002: This Saturday, December 7th at the Anthropologie Store on the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, CA at 2:00 pm. It will be about an hour long set with my guitarist extraordinaire Simone Sello. The kindly folks at Anthropologie love the new Concrete Love album and have been playing it in their stores and have asked me to come down and entertain the Merry Santa Monica Christmas Shoppers. I have taken their support as a sign that I am clearly meant to buy that gorgeous bright green teapot with the pink fairy butterfly on the side that's in the shop window that I've had my eye on for weeks now. For some gals it's matching shoes and handbags, and for others, it's matching teapots and cups and saucers, and for me, well, it's BOTH! It's official ... I've finally arrived in Hollywood. I've been asked to sing the end song for the Christmas episode of ... SCOOBY DOO! It's a duet actually, that features a wonderful new singer songwriter called Johnathan Rice. He's just this second signed to Warner Bros. and has a voice as rich and delicious as sister Claire's annual Christmas cake, that she starts baking in November but won't let me sample until December the flaming 25th! So after those meddling kids have unmasked the Yuletide evil doer, and Shaggy, Scoob, Velma, Fred and Daphne are done saving the world, listen out for Johnathan and I singing "Merry Christmas Day" - written in fact by sister Claire's rather talented boyfriend Rich Dickerson. Do you know the photo I mean? Does anyone have it or a link to it? It's the most statue-like photo I've seen of Joni. It's the older Joni seated on the edge of the fountain in her garden (very park-bench like) and she is staring off into the distance, looking quietly happy and thoughtful. The wind is blowing her hair back. She is wearing one of her favourite Issey Miyake gowns and, yes, she is smoking a cigarette! To me, it's the perfect pose, the perfect facial expression, the perfect mood. I imagine it would be a artist's dream to sculpt it, given the intricacies of line and form. I can safely say that this record will be remembered as being great. People may not know quite how to deal with it now, but in 10 or 20 years from now, people will look back at this record with a lot of respect and appreciation. It's so uniquely Joni. No one else has done anything like this before. And the results are rapturous, and lasting. The record's greatest track, in my opinion, is Hejira, and I'm probably just saying that because it's my favourite JM composition of all time. I'm allowing myself to be bias! The waves of strings over the drums and base, the swell of brass at the end of the song and Joni's dramatic and soulful retelling of this emotional journey is haunting. Thank god she did this song on Travelogue! I'm not going to rank the other songs in any kind of lame order, since they all have some sort of virtue and glimmer of gold, albeit some more than others. A week may not be a long time to decide on much of anything, but I know in my heart that Travelogue will stand the tests of time. - -Andrew PS: Leonard Cohen's voice is the most sexual, most gratifying male voice I've heard, to those who misunderstood my intention when I called it plain. But can someone explain to me please why the proposed statue has that name? I know what the expression "beside oneself" means, I just don't get it as a name for sculpture. Like Lindsey Buckingham, Todd Rudgren and a few others, there isn't an instrument he can't tackle. The only downer was hearing him try to hit the high parts to "In the Morning" off of his first album (this is one of my all time fave Dan albums). He had a difficult time with it 'cause he tried to sing it just like the record. I find this to be a common problem with male singers. They are so preoccupied with exploring their higher range and it renders them incapable of singing their early material once they've aged. Dan has an uncharacteristically high range and being a man he was most definite going to lose it at some point. It probably would have happened even if he hadn't been a smoker. More men should get into exploring their lower register earlier in their careers. Then you run into problems in a live setting 'cause it's really difficult to get the low voices to be heard over the music. I guess there is no easy way around it. Have any of you guys ever heard "Wisteria" off of his first album. The classical guitar lead is beautiful!! I'm not a woman and I'm not gay but when you here this song it almost makes you want to have this guys baby. Pure emotion! (Note: That was over twenty years ago and after the 4 minutes was over I soon came back to my senses.) Hee, Hee. Will >> LOLPMP! THAT is too funny! And, ya know, I feel the same way. I haven't heard Wisteria in many many years but many of Dan's songs do that to me. Great songs are impregnating. I don't think the reason singers can't hit their original high notes is because they smoke. I think it's because they are getting older. I watched U2's concert on CBS last Friday and noticed how Bono had the good sense not to attempt many of the high notes. And poor Julie Andrews! I only hope she listens to Travelogue and realizes that a singer can still wow an audience with a one octave range. Lena Horne still blows me away with records she's recently released (and she's pushing 80)! Since I subscribe to the onlyJoni list I will miss out on the feedback this NJC post generates. DAMN! Actually, I think Joni was indicted...I mean inducted...in her third year of eligibility. That isn't so bad. Who knows, maybe she wasn't nominated in the first couple of years, and the Hall can't induct if there's not a nomination. Maybe someone out there has the scoop...if it matters...I remember reading she was ticked because the Hall wanted $1,000 per person, or thereabouts, for each attending person in her entourage. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Dec 2002 01:43:34 EST From: BRYAN8847@aol.com Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2002 #539 - the film In a message dated 12/3/02 5:38:01 PM Pacific Standard Time, les@jmdl.com writes: > Mitchell hired director Allison Anders (news) (Grace Of My Heart) and > Alistair > Donald (Paul McCartney (news)'s son-in-law and director of the Wingspan > documentary) to film the album's recording sessions at George Martin's Air > Studios in London. I didn't realize Joni was the driving force behind the film, the producer I guess. Having just read the W interview in full...please let's clarify: Joni didn't swipe at Judy, she swiped at Judy's too-sweet, sing-songy arrangement of BSN. As for "ripping off"...please! Joni's career was in large part launched by the covers that Judy and others did. That's certainly not a rip-off.
